I’ve pretty much been doing it this same way since I was ten years old and designed an inexpensive system for my parents and surprised them. I then suggested it to my next door neighbor who did the same. The great advantage was at the end of the year when we’d roll it all up instead of paying for a winterization. I live in Florida now and the major advantage is the ease of repairs.

I think this can be improved by running the hoses through PVC pipe as conduit and burying just below the surface. PVC is really cheap and it will protect the hoses from UV radiation. It also means you can use fairly cheap hose as it's protected. If a hose blows you can just just pull it out and push a new one back through.

    • @YardBrah

I helped install an underground sprinkler system. To be honest a lot of it is pretty easy. You just need to understand spacing between the heads, distance covered per head, how many heads you can have in a zone which is really determined by your water pressure. Lots of video on TH-cam on how to do it. The content is great. Really fresh perspective on lawn care videos.

The B Hyve setup was my missing piece. I would like to start backpack spraying this fall, but still trying to piece together your mollycaldle mix for your yard. @@YardBrah I hosed the area where I needed to run the 1/2" poly tubing through and then used a spade shovel to make a slice through the ground. I only have 2200 sq ft of lawn so it was doable but if you have a large lawn it would be a big project burying all that tubing but it could be done over the course of a couple of weekends. Orbit also sells a kit for about $220. The savings is huge over a pro job and pretty gratifying when completed.

The big thing I face with my plot is that the sides of the house are about 3' feet to the fence and 30'-50' long. I don't have any good ideas for them. The sidewalk-to-curb strip is also annoying.
    Suggestions for that?

You can always use “professional” heads. PVC 3/4 to slip fittings and they make slip to Garden hose fittings as well.
Pair that with a Hunter MP rotor head and you can use all the custom shapes and distances you like. And if you use the pressure regulated Hunter bodies, one less worry there. I did a surface system like this but finally but the bullet last year and did a hybrid in ground system. Trenching 3/4” pvc 10+ inches down but still have it all exit to a 4 port orbit b-hyve timer.

This is great but you are wasting a lot of water on the street and sidewalk. I recommend using Hunter MP Rotators on the side strips. They need to run longer because they put down water slower. However, that’s what makes them incredible and they have way less runoff.

Some of us have to have the hoses lay on top of the grass to connect to the heads, you're fortunate in that you can hide your hoses in your garden beds, under rock, but for those of us that need to extend the hose across the actual grass to connect to a head, would you take the effort and bury your water hoses in the ground??
