    Thank you! What a beautiful Christmas send-off. Inconceivable today, to our great loss. Good that Collier stayed the applause at the end.

      @@shirtless6934 Um...Betty White wasn't Jewish. She was a member of the Unity Church, also I don't see any evidence that Hy Gardner was Jewish either.

    Along with What's My Line, this classic game show from television's infancy, is my all-time favorite. Simple, yet captivating, it is fun to play along... and I'm rarely able to pick the right one.

    Just one more episode to go after this for 1958 and then I'll be taking another break from posting more TTTT episodes for a while. Today's episode features Betty White, and tomorrow's has a special What's My Line connection!
    I do have the first few months of 1959 (though not edited yet), but then a long gap of missing shows till 1961. It may be quite a while before I find copies of the shows I'm missing, and I'd really prefer to post the episodes in order (not to mention being pretty busy with important real life stuff), so I hope you'll understand the need for a possibly extended break. I think most of us-- myself very much included-- are WAY behind on actually watching the episodes posted anyhow. Thanks for your patience and support of the channel!

    *Regarding the Vienna Boys' Choir, there is a very good Austrian movie called "Der schönste Tag meines Lebens" (The Most Beautiful Day of My Life) about a boy who escapes from Communist Hungary and eventually joins the choir. It's what they call a "Heimatfilm" (literally a homeland film), a sentimental movie taking place in an idealized setting. Some might call such movies "kitschy"--but if you understand German, I highly recommend it.*

    At six years of age, I knew enough about college football that I was aware that the 1958 Air Force Academy football team was something of an upstart and came out of nowhere to make it to a major bowl game in its first season against major college opponents. I also remember that the Cotton Bowl against TCU ended up as a 0-0 tie. So far they hit their peak in their first big season: it was their best result in a major bowl game (they lost in the Sugar Bowl in 1971.) They were able to achieve this without having a regular home field. Falcon Stadium wasn't completed until 1962. They played only three home games that year, two at DU Stadium in Denver, the home of the University of Denver football team, and one at a smaller venue in Colorado Springs, en route to a 9 win, no loss and 2 tie season (including the Cotton Bowl result).

      They've had a lot of good teams since but never another year quite as good as that one, their second as a major college football program. .

      Sort of. There was a lot more racism in the form of actual lynchings and not just police making sometimes poor choices, so I wouldn't go too far saying people were good to others in one sweeping statement. And certain abuse went more noticed like domestic violence, and women who were raped had an even harder time being listened to. Those are just a few examples of why society then may be not as swell as you are thinking. There were things better about that time, but there are things better about present day as well. Another thing is better medicine now.

    Among the "Soloists for the Vienna Boys' Choir," I noticed that either # 2 or # 3 (who are Dutch and are brothers) for some reason gave the French pronunciation of (Franz) Schubert. I kind of wonder why!

      Dutch speakers being close to the French, they often learnt the language, among others, given that the boys are sons of a prominent diplomat, especially in that generation, they would be accustomed to the traditional French nonmenclature when speaking to foreigners.
      This would not happen today, given the influence American culture has had on European society in the last 60 years.

    In game 1, the X-15 was mentioned. If you have never seen a video of the X-15 rocket plane being launched from the bottom of another plane (if my memory is right), take a look. Didn't Kitty and Hy go 3 for 3? To be a soloist in the Vienna Boys Choir is quite an accomplishment and honor. Thanks for the video. Hate to say it, but I did missed Polly a bit.

    But Cessna is also in Wichita even at the time of this show. So the other two were not wrong. Wichita is very well known for being a base for plane making and even a few decent sized private airports that the factories use. I live in Washington state where the main one is even then, but sadly it seems they may be moving all operations from here to South Carolina.

    • @totellthetruthcbs4220
      @totellthetruthcbs4220  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It was standard practice in this era to simply consider "Merry Christmas" the standard holiday greeting. Even further than this, folks like George Burns and Jack Benny, who were Jewish, did full blown Christmas episodes virtually every year, with no mention of their being Jewish (even though everyone knew.)

    • @edwinrivera8449
      @edwinrivera8449 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am 20 years of age. Very new to the internet I watch What's My Line? and I just started watching To Tell The truth. It was odd to here them say Merry Christmas. Were I work we are not allowed to say that. I can say it's no big deal... But the truth of the matter is, It is a big deal to me. At what point did it become against the law to say Merry Christmas?

    • @totellthetruthcbs4220
      @totellthetruthcbs4220  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Edwin Rivera It's not against the law to say "Merry Christmas", people are just a lot more prone to taking offense at basically harmless things nowadays. Speaking as a Jewish person, I don't love the fact that "Merry Christmas" was considered an appropriate thing to wish anyone, but I also don't see any cause for making a big national stink about this. There are far more important issues for society to deal with than this.
      But this is probably not a topic we should pursue any further here. I don't want people to start arguing about it. Thanks!

      @edwinrivera8449 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I live in New York City. I was 18 years of age.(now 20) I worked for a Jewish family in the garment district (Loving family) I sent them a Christmas card thanking them for all they have done for me. The card had a painting of Jesus Christ. My family said to me... You can't do that they are Jewish. The following day when I saw them and said I am sorry for the card I had sent you. There responds was... This is your believe we respect it. you gave your love to us.

      Oh, never mind, living in Brooklyn myself, originally from Yonkers, I know that there really is segregation in the city. We like to think of ourselves as cosmopolitan and diverse, but there are White neighborhood, Black neighborhoods, Latino neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, etc...
