I haven’t heard this song and really listened to it, but this song is to me one of his best songs because it’s so autobiographical. It’s actually insane. To me it’s like he’s somewhat parodying Thriller and the idea of something scary is coming but also saying that the way he was treated like a creature (like what he became in the thriller video) by the public is the real scary thing going on but the show must go on, or something along those lines. The line “so let the performance start.” really hits hard when you look back on his life. This album and History has some crazy songs, and to me honestly some of his deepest work.

Yes. Through this song, he is , in a way, depicting his own life....the way he was abused and troubled right from childhood all the way upto the day he died. The beatings from his dad, the accusations, the false stories about him, about his features and ethnicity....he was severely exhausted from all these. And this song is a true amalgamation of all the tragic events that happened in his lifetime. No doubt he is a lyrical genius!

Not to mention, he also was a black man, and at the time (even now) wasn’t taken seriously by everybody. The entire HIStory album was exposing the truths about the music industry and the media. He’s the ghost, the ghoul, he’s the subject of the song imo. The eccentric and grotesque line, to me, was about not only about his appearance, but how the media always saw him as weird and strange, like the elephant man bone headline for example.
