Van Exel a serious beast! I remember him keeping us all on life support in awaiting the big Shaq/Kobe rise! He and Shaq played well together but timing just not right. We've all did that one foot Van Exel running shot! Great memories....Chick obviously so much a part of that!
It's great to know that someone on TH-cam gave this team the respect it so richly deserves. Really appreciated! FYI you can recreate this team on NBA 2K18. If you want to know how, I'll be glad to tell you in the comment section.
OMG! I almost teared up watching this bro. By far my favorite Laker team. Thank u sooooo much for acknowledging this team. Nick the Quick is still my favorite Laker and was the heart and soul of that team. This brings back so many incredible memories. Wooow!!
Dude this was such a great trip back to my earliest Laker memories. Hearing Chick lay it down was beautiful and so very appreciated on a day like today when there's so much ugliness in the world. Thank you brother.
Great video. Loved Van Exel's toughness. Little guy wasn't afraid to take it right at Shaq. Always thought we could've gone further if Elden Campbell had Van Exel's heart.
Beautiful video, brother. I especially love the Chick Hearn shout out. I feel so bad for young fans that missed out on him. Truly, the best who's ever done it.
One of my favorite all-time teams, and Ceballos one of my favorite all time players (he left CSUF just as I arrived- I mostly witnessed the Bruce Bowen era)- completely underrated, and one of the most crafty players of all-time, was always moving on offense- ALWAYS, which created tons of scoring opportunities. I once watched Ceballos playing for a random team in Summer League back when it was held at CSLB, at the Pyramid- there were like 15 people in attendance (side note: also saw Duncan in his Junior year and Damon Stoudamire playing randomly for a college all-star team there-- summer league was a different animal back then!)- Ceballos played almost the entire game and all of overtime, scoring 35 points in a win, and I could tell he was exhausted, but he pretty much put on a show just because I was 5 rows back cheering like a madman- and I'll never forget that.
Thank you so much for this video! You know, having been kinda fixated on Kobe for twenty years, I forgot how much fun that team was to watch, even though they never made the Finals. Laker fans are kinda spoiled that way. And yes, I maintain to this day that the greatest Laker of all time was not Kobe or Magic or Kareem or West, but the man whose career went through all those eras, the man with the golden throat, the man who coined half the basketball dictionary ("slam dunk", "triple double", "airball, "brick" and more), the one and only Chick Hearn. Still miss you, Chicky-Baby!
Dude, thank you for this. Eddie Jones is one of my all time faves. Van Exel was nice. I remember wearing the wristband on my bicep sometimes cause of Ceballos in HS. Cambpell was an underrated post player with fundamental footwork that most bigs are missing these days. And of course Vlade as you said was ahead of his time. Wasn't appreciated until Sacramento. But watching his highlights on this you realize his game is the exact same as it was in Sacramento. Fun to watch.
This is my favorite Lakers team ever, they had so much heart. I have so many memories of watching the road games on kcal 9, listening to Chick Hearns again brings me so much joy. Thank you for making this video.
This video is amazing, I went to a bunch of games that season with my friends at the Forum. It was the start of something new and our team now reminds me of this Laker team. BTW-thanks for acknowledging that Chick was the real star of that team :)
What about Sedale? He had some injuries but he was still a big part of that season. But props for doing this video. My favorite basketball team of all time. Much respect to you.
I loved watching that team. Van Exel was the original 'ice in his veins' guard. Sedale Threatt was another quality player on the team too. I rememebr one night he dropped 42 on the Knicks. And I saw that game vs the Spurs in the playoffs when Van Exel hit that one-handed 3 at the buzzer, my brothers and I were dancing around the room. They weren't supposed to beat the Spurs, but for a moment we were believing it.
Thank you for this SO MUCH! These were my guys!! I was in 8th grade, saw Every Game of the season. Wore my Lakers' hat every day in school despite a no hat policy. Nicky and Eddie were THE BEST! And Cedric had style on and off the court: I'm never forgetting his salmon colored suit, or the pale green one. I was heartbroken when they lost in the 2nd round. And yeah, I was just saying the other day that I miss Chick's style of play-by-play constantly. He made the games more fun while painting beautiful pictures of the action on court. He was completely honest about the Lakers and their opponents. I miss him calling every new NBA star a "nice" or "very nice" young man (whether they were or not, I imagine they were all nice to Chick). I keep hearing that in my head whenever Kuz or Lonzo does something on the court - Chick just pausing to tell you that he's a "very nice young man". Plus don't we all try to predict when Chick would've put games in the refrigerator?
Maaaaan THANK YOU for this! You are the real MVP....my main reason for my appreciation is bc of Nick the Quick aka Nick at Nite Van Exel....outside of Kobe n Magic my personal favorite Laker is Nick Van Exel...i know some wont believe that but ever since I saw him in college wit Cincy especially when they played my Tarheels in the NCAA Tourney....Nick was just flat out special man...i was a PG so I'm a lil partial to the position but even tho im right handed just loved his game...agaim thanks for the video #LakeShow #LakersNation #PurplenGold
I loved this laker team. Rookie eddie jones dunking, ceballos scoring underneath and van exel emerging. What a team and reason why lakers needed just one year removed fron playoffs a year before to prove the genius in jerry west. Lakers rebuild was complete then came the ultimate shaq and kobe acquisitions of 1996
Chick would've made the past 4 years SO much easier to get through. He was even more rarer than a Lebron or a Kobe. Deserves the retired jersey and the statue in front of Staples.
I saw this one comment on one of npz zealots videos which made me laugh out loud, that on 3:35 Rick Fox is standing there after Van Exel made that shot like 'damn!! Better join this kick ass team soon!!'
Man what a fun roster that was... it hurt to see them break it up. I was especially pissed when we traded Vlade for some 18-year-old. That anger passed very very quickly, though. Fantastic work, Pete!!
I remember watching these Lakers and they were fun to watch. You just had a feeling they were just missing one more person to be able to make it to the Finals. I wonder what it would have been like if they kept this core together or kept some of the players like Van Excel.
Great video! Also my favorite team ever. Saw every game that year on TV. Great time for a sports fan in LA as UCLA was ranked #1 in college bb and won the national championship. I wonder what would have been if Vlade hit those FTs against SA. The Lakers owned the Rockets that year and would have played them in the WCF. A lot of people I know still talk about this team and that year. As for the 7 people that disliked this video: Del Harris was one. George Karl was probably another. And the other ones, Celtic fans for what Nick did at the Garden that year.
Nick the Quick was so underrated. I'm praying to the big Chicky in the sky that L.Ball can be at least as good a Laker as Van Exel. Those several years between Magic retiring (I know he came back) and Phil Jackson arriving were exciting, amazing and entertaining while being so frustrating. I loved Eddie Jones and Vlade...hated to see both go but understood why. Ceballos, Peeler, Eldon Campbell & of course, Chicky all made this era such fun and a good time to remember. Chicky made everything better no matter the era. 03:37 was Dell's crip walk LOL
I remember this team very well. I'm not going to front and act like the Lakers were my team then but they were my older brother's favorite team so I watched a number of there games as a kid. I remember those Van Exel game winners against the Celtics and the Spurs. Me and my brother actually went to a game that year against the Celtics (Lakers won) with my cousin and uncle who had extra tickets lol. That Laker team did not have a "superstar" but they had a number of really good players that competed and played well together. But the greatest member of that organization especially at that time was Chick Hern. This was really good work from editing to commentary. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Here's a fact that too often gets slept on: Cedric Ceballos, perhaps second to only Mark Aguirre, was the most skilled and accomplished player of Blaxican heritage in NBA history. It feels like a happy coincidence that he spent most of his career in LA, Phoenix, and Dallas-- three cities with a wealth of Mexican history, influence and constituency. I feel like no one made a big deal out of it in the 90's, but you gotta give paisa Cedric his due. The homie was a native son who could drop 50 points or 16 bars on you and make it look easy. I still rock the Ceballos jersey in laker purple with pride.
Love IT! Nick the Quick! and of course the Legendary CHICK HEARN! "This game's in the refrigerator: the door is closed, the lights are out, the butter's getting hard, the eggs are cooling, and the Jell-O's jigglin'"!!!! That's a wrap folks!
Eddie Jones was also the favorite player of a lot of my older cousins and were pissed when he was traded. Fortunately enough for the Lakers, the SG that replaced him was ten times better than Eddie, and that's no knock on EJ. His replacement was just that much better.
I’m a minute into this video and I already love it, yes I love the 80’s lakers and the 2008-2010 team but man the lakeshow of those two or three years were so awesome! Doug Christie was part of that era along with George Lynch, man West could draft nasty. God bless the lakers and all of its players. Btw I’m from Miami not LA but I grew up watching all of the good shit people make videos about today.
Awesome video, but I was a bit too young to have memories of this 94-95 team. The first one I had solid memories of was the 97-98 Lakers team, which was my favorite. An uber talented bunch that had Nick the Quick, Eddie, Shaq, Rick Fox with the shaved death row in mate haircut, a sleepwalking Elden Campbell, Robert Horry, Fish and last but not least a wild teenage Kobe throwing up crazy shots that made Del Harris and Chick wail in terror and awe.Hope we'll get to see a video of them soon.
I would listen to chick on the radio, and get the emotion of the game as if I was in the stands. Whenever the game was on national TV, I would mute the sound and put Chick on the radio. He was the best laker fan ever and the reason I am a fan of basketball to this day.
Man Nick the Quick Van Exel! His style was ahead of time. The forgotten team! Loved Ceballos, Nick and Eddie Jones! Lakers should retire Nick Van jersey.
I love this Laker team. They overachieved which is rare for the Lakers who are usually expected to win championships. But this team was expected to miss the playoffs again.
might perhaps be my all time favorite laker squad, next to the 92-93 squad, they didn't win anything except everyone's respect but they had lion hearts and it's always exciting as a fan that you know you got a puncher's chance of making some noise. the follow up season in '96 was a head scratcher for me, how did they get off to playing so poorly they needed to recruit Magic Johnson back into active duty? That messed up the squad's camaraderie bringing him back despite the record improvement. heading into the playoffs in my adult mind today I can see just how they were heading into a rude awakening.
Love that team they finished 48-34 i have the feeling that if lonzo is for real this year we can get close to ceballos/van exel lakers....please god,!!!
I miss Chick Hearn so much. Hearing his magical calls again was awesome!
Same here, well said.
James Park ....amen!
Legendary! He was excitement.
I witnessed almost all these games on KCAL
So did I. Best games I ever watched.
Same here some of the best basketball growing up,this was a great and fun Lakers team
Is it just me or are the lakers boring to watch now with queen James
Van Exel a serious beast! I remember him keeping us all on life support in awaiting the big Shaq/Kobe rise! He and Shaq played well together but timing just not right. We've all did that one foot Van Exel running shot! Great memories....Chick obviously so much a part of that!
Brad C me too. Ceballos, Jones, van exel were so fun to watch. Can’t say that with the current lakers squad
Wooow!!
I teared up a few times while making this over the weekend, bro.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU This is my favorite laker team
It was an honor to make it. This was the squad back in the day.
I miss Chick Hearn. Truly was a treat to hear him broadcast games.
I hope you do a 96/97 Lakers or 97/98 those teams before Phil came were nice to watch as well
I watched one from 98, that team felt like they ran a lot of triangle action to post up Shaq.
I'm glad you gave my man Elden his due credit. I'll never forget that big game he had filling in for Shaq against Patrick Ewing.
Bro this was the squad that my dad introduced me to as a kid. Thanks for the memories man!!
Thanks, this team was so funny to watch.Van Exel and Vlad were both ahead of their times in so many ways.
Dude this was such a great trip back to my earliest Laker memories. Hearing Chick lay it down was beautiful and so very appreciated on a day like today when there's so much ugliness in the world. Thank you brother.
I guess we're the same age because I loved that team too! Threatt is sort of an unsung hero when he held down the fort after Magic and Worthy left.
Got me all choked up when you introduced the Chick Hearn segment of this vid... man, I miss Chick more than anything
Nick the quick is my favorite laker. I remember going to the forum at half time and getting in for a dollar.
Goosebumps listening to Chick. When Sedale went left, that shot is good as Chick mentioned numerous times
Thanks. This was one of my all time favorite teams. Van Exel is still one of my favorites.
Pete, this takes me back. Some of my very first Laker memories. This was a trip man, keep up the great work!
Making this video was like seeing an old friend for the first time in years. And hearing Chick's voice, man. One of a kind.

That game winner in the Garden tho.. ooooh such joyful bliss.
Thank you so much for this video! You know, having been kinda fixated on Kobe for twenty years, I forgot how much fun that team was to watch, even though they never made the Finals. Loved seeing Nick Van Exel again ... great video!
LOVED this squad! A+ breakdown.

I still hear Chick Hern saying, "What a bonehead play by Elden Campbell!" lol.
Just seeing the title of this video helps to make me feel better about this Laker season
This video is amazing, I went to a bunch of games that season with my friends at the Forum. It was the start of something new and our team now reminds me of this Laker team. BTW-thanks for acknowledging that Chick was the real star of that team :)
i grew up in Eltoro/Irvine...i watched every game this was my team

They weren't supposed to beat the Spurs, but for a moment we were believing it.
Watched that team in the Forum. They beat Seattle, Utah and Charlotte within a week and they were all leading their respective divisions!
i also shot that one footed 3 pointer by van exel a thousand times as a kid
Thank you for this SO MUCH! These were my guys!! I was in 8th grade, saw Every Game of the season. Wore my Lakers' hat every day in school despite a no hat policy. Nicky and Eddie were THE BEST! Katherine Marmer Very true i miss chick too.
I was heart broken when they traded Eddie and ceballos

#LakeShow #LakersNation #PurplenGold
Brought back so many great memories growing up L.A.!!! That Chick segment was amazing.
Man just hearing chick hearn during this era was butter. Still remember van exel buzzer beater against the spurs. Clutch nick V
This is a nice break from listening to Bill Macdonald another year
Great vid man. I would love to see you work for the Lakers some day. You're really knowledgeable.
I think my future is on the media side of things, but I appreciate the kind words, Ayush.
@@fantasyEXX Wait did he really get hired by the team?!! That's amazing!
A squad that lived and breathed Jimmy V’s philosophy, “Don’t give up...don’t ever give up.”
Brilliantly done. Thank you!
Tears of joy right here Pete!
Thanks and keep it up bro
I loved this laker team. Rookie eddie jones dunking, ceballos scoring underneath and van exel emerging. What a team and reason why lakers needed just one year removed fron playoffs a year before to prove the genius in jerry west. Lakers rebuild was complete then came the ultimate shaq and kobe acquisitions of 1996
This one brings back memories. My boys didn't know much about this team as we were up to Shenanigans but they were fun to watch.
Chick would've made the past 4 years SO much easier to get through. He was even more rarer than a Lebron or a Kobe. Deserves the retired jersey and the statue in front of Staples.
LMFAO chuck said if payton needs rest.. van exel needs mouth to mouth.. CLASSIC hahahaha
I saw this one comment on one of npz zealots videos which made me laugh out loud, that on 3:35 Rick Fox is standing there after Van Exel made that shot like 'damn!! Better join this kick ass team soon!!'
Its so rare to see a vid with 135 like an no dislikes...this deserves it though. Great work. Keep it coming.
make that 186!
Percdanny 2 dislikes... probably from Payton and Kemp lol
So cheap haha!!!!
Nicky V was my dude! I make all my Myplayers in 2K based off Nick! I use his college number #31. Excellent Video!
EJ was so underated and he low key taught Kobe a lot of his game
Man! If Nick The Quick played in this era he would probably be a superstar.
Thanks. My favorite Laker team too. I hoping this year's team will surprise people the same way.
As for the 7 people that disliked this video: Del Harris was one. George Karl was probably another. And the other ones, Celtic fans for what Nick did at the Garden that year.
Virgil Lesaca rem the lakers theme song on kcal9? So man memories
epakerd oh yeah baby I miss Chick Hearn. One in a trillion human being
Love the video, love chick, love the old forum, love this team. Great great work!
Nice video, thanks.
Nick the Quick was so underrated. I'm praying to the big Chicky in the sky that L.Ball can be at least as good a Laker as Van Exel. 03:37 was Dell's crip walk LOL
Del Harris talkin shit in that clip makes me laugh every. single. time.
I was 7 at the time and this is my first memory of the Lakers I loved this team
4:18" if payton needs rest van excel needs mouth to mouth" wtf😂😂
Armaan Sandha pause
Armaan Sandha He's saying he's dead tired....mouth to mouth is CPR
Kay C i know what he is saying i just thought it was funny
Averaged 47 minutes a game....that's criminal in todays' games lmao
This was a fun and energetic team. Loved that series against the Super Sonics.
I still have my Ceballos jersey!
I honestly think NVE is one of the most underrated Lakers of all time.
Here's a fact that too often gets slept on:
Cedric Ceballos, perhaps second to only Mark Aguirre, was the most skilled and accomplished player of Blaxican heritage in NBA history.
Damn, i was born in August right after this season
Thank you for this! Especially the Chick highlights! Good stuff man!
Love IT! Nick the Quick! and of course the Legendary CHICK HEARN! "This game's in the refrigerator: the door is closed, the lights are out, the butter's getting hard, the eggs are cooling, and the Jell-O's jigglin'"!!!! That's a wrap folks!
Man this is Gold!
Van Exel is such a beast! 🐲
Thaaaank you for doing this video....this was back before we got the fair weather band wagoners during the Shaq / Kobe Years
Eddie Jones was also the favorite player of a lot of my older cousins and were pissed when he was traded. Fortunately enough for the Lakers, the SG that replaced him was ten times better than Eddie, and that's no knock on EJ. His replacement was just that much better.
Nick Van Exel would thrive so much in today's NBA.
Ah i loved this team just seeing elden cambell this squad shoulda did some things this the team i grew up watching and made me a lakers fan
God I feel old .......the original lakeshow would be waaaaay b4 this
Thank you.
Great video for the younger fans.
I’m a minute into this video and I already love it, yes I love the 80’s lakers and the 2008-2010 team but man the lakeshow of those two or three years were so awesome! Doug Christie was part of that era along with George Lynch, man West could draft nasty. God bless the lakers and all of its players. NICK THE Quick ,Man I miss Chick Hearns Voice 😭
Thanks for this! Van Exel is my favorite "non-great" Laker. ..and Chick Hearn!!
Oh, and i miss Chick Hearn tremendously
Man Nick the Quick Van Exel! His style was ahead of time. The forgotten team! Loved Ceballos, Nick and Eddie Jones! Lakers should retire Nick Van jersey.
yayyy great video, pete!
"If Payton needs rest..Van Exel needs Mouth to Mouth" hahaha good Ol Chick Hearn
I remember thinking the Lakers & Mavs were really on the way up because they both had such good young talent. This was a fun team!
If u can can u do a Chick Hearn highlights
Nick the quick was my favorite childhood laker 😭
Please Do 09-10 Lakers Film Room Next Please🙏
Big-O the team that brought to the game of 🏀 and made me a laker fan, good times
Nick Van Exel was unbelievable I think he was God given talent
I love this Laker team. They overachieved which is rare for the Lakers who are usually expected to win championships. But this team was expected to miss the playoffs again.
LFR, man I miss videos like this. When are you going to do more???
Nice one
my favs!
might perhaps be my all time favorite laker squad, next to the 92-93 squad, they didn't win anything except everyone's respect but they had lion hearts and it's always exciting as a fan that you know you got a puncher's chance of making some noise. the follow up season in '96 was a head scratcher for me, how did they get off to playing so poorly they needed to recruit Magic Johnson back into active duty? Love that team they finished 48-34 i have the feeling that if lonzo is for real this year we can get close to ceballos/van exel lakers....please god,!!!
09:29 was from the 95-96 season. Eddie jones was murder though. Miss that lakers team from the mid 90’s
