Hey folks, welcome back to my garden, we have such beautiful couple days here over the weekend. I am feeling Spring is right here now. As the right time frame, today I wanted to share with you how I prune and train my roses in my garden including bushes and climber. Hopefully, by watching this video, it will bring you some joys and good information as well. Please subscribe and hit the like button down below if you see it is really helpful. Thank you for your watching and support! Cheers!
Thanks so much for your compliment! Much appreciated! Totally agree with you regarding Earth Angel and Bliss Parfuma, always being reliable roses in my garden!
As always Very nice garden. Rose pruning made simple task for average gardeners. I have Wollerton old Hall climbing rose, very fragrant. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful video of lovely roses.
Thank you for your compliment and watching! Yes, I agree with you on rose pruning, so don’t be afraid to prune, they will grow back with a good shape for you in the new season, but always remember to prune them in the Spring
Thank you! My WOH has directly sunlight from 7.30 am until 3.00 pm in the main season, fall and early spring will be less, so it is about 6.5 hours exposes sunlight, can consider it is full sun!
Nice to see the structure of your garden before the blooms come. I didn’t realize you do a lot of container growing, something I will be doing here this year (Toronto) as I have limited sunny space. I always leave the old original dead canes on my roses, too scared of doing something wrong but now I will prune them out! Do you use different fertilizers for spring and summer? Or the same? Thanks for the helpful tips!
Thank you! Just want to remind you that, keep an eye on your climate if you want to grow roses in the containers, here in Lower Mainland, BC, it is very ideal for roses in the containers, since we have mild winter. But I don’t know if you can do that in Toronto ( I know you guys had really warm winter this year, but you need consistent temperature year by year). Sometimes we have a dropped temperature down in couple days in the winter (-15), so I had to protect all my containerized roses, otherwise they will turn black and die eventually. I have fertilizer following formula 3-1-2 in the Spring and with compost mulching (please check on some my old videos in last year). In the summer I use liquid fertilizer weekly or bi-weekly. Hope that helps!
Your pruning and training process looks so satisfying 😂 I can’t wait to see the blooms soon! BTW how did you attach the white trellis on your house siding? Did you nail it?
Thanks for your watching and comment, I can’t wait for the new season starting too, I screwed the trellis in to the sidings with screw deck! Pretty solid, if you are careful then you should apply the silicone onto your screws, so you aren’t worry about waterproof
Thank you for sharing this is always great information. I just finished my roses. I would like to know when you begin feeding your roses and also if you spray as a preventative? Thanks
Thank you! After your prunning, you can fertilize your roses right away, I may have a video for that, but if you want to look for the same information, please look back my videos from last year. And I also spray Dormant oil (organic, chemicals are not allowed in Canada) for killing all the insects from last year as well!
@@smallbackyardfun thanks I will look back to previous videos but that sounds great. I also only use neem oil if necessary mostly for the rose saw fly larvae which we get every year.
Actually, it depends on how old your roses are, what kind? Example, if very young roses (first year), I would prune lightly and leave them alone for forming their cane structure. And with hybrid tea variety and older than two-year old plants, I could prune hard, and leave them with just 5-6 strong canes with height is about 12-18 inches. David Austin roses are a little bit different, they are all English roses, so the canes are thinner than hybrid tea ones, but bushier, with DA roses, I could leave their height from 18-24 inches. All my roses, I just prune from 18-28 inches height, if they have long strong canes, I will leave them long enough (28-30 inches l) and will peck them down (bending horizontally just like climber), and I have good and a lot of flowers from those canes. By pecking the canes down, you will have the basal shoots breaking as well!
Hello great video. A bit of constructive feedback, your voice audio is much lower than the music. When I raise the volume to hear you clearly, then between breaks your music comes on super loud. Anyhow meant as positive feedback not negative criticism.
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated that, I definitely will pay attention and keep your comment in mind for editing of my voice and background music in the next videos! Thanks again!

I can’t wait to see a lot of blooms in your garden. I have a question. Is your wollerton old hall in full sun or part sun?

@@smallbackyardfun thank you. I just got mine last week. I need to find a perfect full sun spot for it then.
@@tharathsaran if you have limited choices, than 4.5 hours should be ok too, I have some roses are pretty decent in 4 -4.5hours of sunlight
@@smallbackyardfun thank you. 😊
