Before I did my v8 flathead I was told part of overheating problems was caused by Henry not getting that sand shook out of the blocks very well. I hung mine in various positions and scratched in all holes into water jacket with long coat hanger wire and pressure washed in them. I did this over and over until sand quit coming out. I did it over a large sheet of card board so I could collect the sand to see how much it was. It filled a large coffee can over half full. I also cleaned lime out of radiator by filling it with vinegar and letting it sit a day, poured it out into 5 gallon bucket, let it settle out and had an 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of lime in bottom. This truck has never overheated, even in slow moving parade. Good luck with it, it will run great.

Looking good, brother. I remember these apocryphal tales about hot rodders drafted during WWII who did crazy stuff like put flathead V8s in GPW Jeeps, etc out of boredom then see how fast they could go. Every time I see you work on this I think about you doing a "tribute" along those lines!

That block has unintentionally acquired a special place in my heart, every time you work with it I get a smile from ear to ear on my face. 😃
BYA, though I'm not a card carrying member of the "Flatheads Forever" club I do appreciate the old tech especially how they sound! I owned and drove 49 + 51 Fords as well as 49, 51 + 52 Plymouths back in the late 50s + early 60s and really appreciate their simplicity, durability and ability to absorb petal to the metal abuse. Due to less than optimal oil + filter quality back then they tended to start blue smoking at the 40-50 thousand mile mark. Of course they would run forever! With modern oil + filter your flatty should be pretty immortal! Congrats on the find + save!
Your propane torch and a round wire brush will be your friend while cleaning the intake and exhaust pasages. I've always liked that industrial blue paint on the block.

I think by the time they got to the 337s the casting was a lot better, i dont hear about nearly as many cracked

Good to watch a full restoration. When I was a kid one of our neighbours had an old Ford V8 in his truck that he had converted to a slant 4 by simply removing the valves from one bank, making a blanking plate to close it off except for the pistons that were open to the air. Worked OK. He reckoned it saved him money for fuel.

They may have had lots of problems from the design on, but they are beautiful looking, wonderful sounding engines. My brother just finished getting the flathead in his 51 F-6 dump trucks tricked out like he wanted it just before he was diagnosed with cancer. I like to think back about the big smile on his face every time he drove it.

Flat heads,,,,, low on power, they leak, over heat, smoke and yes I want one.
🤣I drive my 8ba regularly, and it has none of those problems.

Strong concentration of Tide works very well too! Used that on a 272 that I rebuilt/refreshed and it removed a bunch of junk. You can give that a shot as well.
It would be best to use the original powder if they still make it. It works better than most degreasers. Something about the sodium sulfates, I think it was. It's a trick I learned in an auto shop class a million years ago.
@@billwood2914they still do and that is what we used! A box can go a long way. Got a small box at the beginning of the project and still have a little left. Worked amazing for our project.
Looking good i love flat head motors . Have a bad feeling on that one cylinder not sure that ones going to be fixble . Not sure a machine shop could fix . Guess you will find out when you get down that part of it. Great video. Loved the old chev in the back ground there. Hope to see new glass in it.
