Not sure if this has been mentioned, but a much earlier episode of Scrubs, JD and Turk were on call and while out of the hospital had drinks with a mate who was visiting, and then got paged to come in. Dr Cox came to dress them down for being late and smelled the beer on them and ripped them a new one for coming to work drunk - just a bit of extra character depth you might not be aware of, with Dr Cox doing something he clearly wouldn't be happy with anyone else to do. 🔥
The thing that was really well done about the duology is how much it calls back to prior episodes. Dr. Cox showing up drunk is a direct parallel to Turk and JD showing up drunk in earlier season and Cox throwing them out of the hospital for it, for example. People usually cite Ben's funeral as the emotional opus of he series but I'd argue that My Lunch/My Fallen Mentor wallowed more in Dr. Cox's compulsion, making it slightly better.
I'm so familiar with Scrubs that there are several lines I always think of in real life when faced with particular things. When I see a wrench, I hear the Janitor's voice saying "knife wrench!" Scrubs is so special for it's incredible writing and acting and uncanny way of making you laugh and cry and cuts straight through to the essence of the human condition. I love Dr. Cox and J.D.'s relationship morphs over time from mentor / trainee, to eventually more and more like peers. And the performances are so good, like you said, you can see the burning 🔥in Dr. Cox's eyes like he's been hit with a truck.

Thanks for reacting to this video! Re: gossip, apparently gossip was one of the early forms of communication, part of what they call the 'cognitive revolution' where our species took a real turn. Initially, being able to share information about other people helped to form trust and bonds in smaller groups. The Blanks' version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow was actually featured on Scrubs! The episode "My Way Home", which was their 100th episode (and directed by Zach Braff/JD). :)
A close family member of mine was a healthcare provider from the 1970’s through 1990’s and developed a serious opioid addiction late in their career. It happened immediately after a serious trauma in their personal life. Luckily they recovered and are very much still with us and enjoying retirement.

JD's "The More You Know" segment is a parody of a real series of Public Service Announcements that have run on the NBC network in the United States since 1989. It replaced a previous series of PSA known as "One to Grow On" which began in 1983. These were aimed at younger viewers have been the source or many parodies. "Scrubs" originally ran on NBC from Season 1-7 and then moved to ABC for seasons 8-9.

Each episode of scrubs may not always contain a ton of medical information, however like this episode shows, it gets into the more personal and emotional side of being a healthcare worker which is also incredibly important
Thanks for posting these videos. Not only are they focusing on a show that is, to many of us, one of the best sitcoms, but they are also informative. As someone who's gathering info to apply to uni and finally get back into Science for medical studies, your videos are always a highlight. Fire emoji. 🔥
As someone who’s mom was sick and spent over a decade in hospitals to the point the surgeon asked if I was a dr or nurse bc the questions I asked….. just ask them if it’s ok, say due to the moment you think a hug would be good…. When my mom died, our drs prayed with us, and then I played some music as she took her last breath, they too bawled as my father grabbed her and I just sat there holding her hand… hugs went all around… she died horrifically as well…. Women just like being asked, and then they can say no, and you can say I’m so sorry for this moment.
The bit at the end about alcoholism is spot on. I have struggled with it for nearly 20 years and I still do, glad to say with much progress made and significant gaps in suffering moments. Admitting you need and want help are key starting points.
Such an amazing show!! Always manages to get to your heart strings, even as you laugh along... The cast is incredible. They really had such great chemistry!!🔥
WRT gossip you mentioned, I have a plausible theory from an evolutionary psychology perspective. Formal learning in school is a relatively recent concept. Early humans learned via observation - we saw someone go into a lake and get eaten, we learned not to go into the lake. That worked great for humans that saw something bad happen firsthand, but there wasn't a way to pass that knowledge on until language and stories. A story is the smallest unit of useful social information: "I was somewhere, I needed something, I tried some strategy to get it, and here's how that turned out". Learning via hearing about someone else's experiences, that's pretty cheap wisdom for us. Gossip ties into that same system. From a socio-evolutionary perspective, "Did you hear about grog? He went in that lake and got eaten by a crocodile, don't go in that lake or you'll get eaten too" and, "Did you hear about Dr. Cox, he showed up drunk at work and got in trouble, don't come to work drunk or you'll get in trouble too" are practically the same thing. 🔥
The relationship between Kelso and Cox is one of the best. There is a line in a later episode of the series, around season 7 I think, that cracks me up every time I hear it, but will not spoil it.
Hey, I've seen all 9 seasons several times, will you whisper it to me? Is it "his name's Lesley," when talking about Kelso's angels? Or when Kelso tells JD that he and Cox went to the movies together and saw a romantic comedy, perhaps? I'm so curious now lol
@@skunkrat01 Now people have to actively click on the replies to see this, as opposed to simply seeing it on the open screen, I will. It's when Kelso and Cox's friendship is announced to everyone, and Kelso states that the secrecy of their relationship was, "...like having an affair without all that exhausting sex". :D
@@gestaltdude had totally forgotten that one. Nice choice 😃 I feel like we have a secret now that no-one else may ever stumble on. Sometimes the internet is cool like that
In the entirety of the show the ending of this episode is my favorite scene because it’s a really rare bonding scene between two characters that you see all the time usually reacting to each other in a more hostile way and it shows a side of Dr. Cox that you only get to see in like three or four episodes throughout the entire run of the show.
"Why is gossip addictive?" If I had to guess I'd say it's because humans are such social creatures. Knowing things about the people around you gives you a heads up in social interactions. Humans can also be pretty competitive and knowledge is power. Maybe we're just hardwired to find bits of information about the people around us interesting to a fault.
🔥 Happy to see another video come up on my feed, instant watch on my Saturday off. Scrubs has always been an incredible show, and even though here and there you might find a moment that has not really 'aged well' you can forgive and gloss over it for the countless quality moments and great writing. And hugs *are* important. Just sad it's been over a year since I've had one. 😭
Hello! New subscriber! Scrubs is, without a doubt, my favorite medical series. Maybe it's because it's more down to earth than the other shows that are more drama (and melodrama) oriented. Anyways, another good episode to check out is My Catalyst from season 3- deals with OCD and guest stars Michael J. Fox.
Hello Doctor Syl, amazing episode and I’m glad you’re into these! if I had to recommend another episode that’s a good mixture of medical lingo, surgical stories, emotions, and life lessons. Might I Recommend: season 5 episode 7 “My Way Home” It’s a nice episode that also pays homage to the Wizard of Oz, and has each of the main characters looking for something in particular (medically)
Great commentary. For a kid's channel, if done soon I bet kids have as many questions about Covid and vaccines as adults do. Other than that common illnesses and injuries for kids; colds, flu, chicken pox, allergies, broken bones, scrapes and keeping them clean. Maybe a child friendly pregnancy segment for those who are gonna get a baby sibling. The only thing is with alcoholism it has to be for themselves. So many people around alcoholics feel like they failed, because the alcoholic can't stop for them. It isn't a lack of love from the alcoholic, or from the person around them. A few might find the will power from someone they love to make that personal commitment, but it has to be from something inside them to last. 🔥
I love what you said about hugging, I'm a hugger. And it reminded me of 999 or 24hrs in A&E or something and a lady went through something traumatic and these lines were said. " If it wasn't for all this craziness (Craziness = Covid) I'd hug you." "You can have a hug off me anytime darling " 😢 That broke me xx Paramedics are good people.
Rewatching this episode now touched me in an unexpected way. I don't work in medicine, but in IT and a few years ago I started a new job and become friends with a younger engineer. I never really realised how much I was teaching him, but one day he came out and said that I was like a mentor to him. It was unexpected and not something I ever imagined I'd be to someone, but it was certainly nice to know. Fast forward to now and I've since left that job and things aren't going too well for me. Kinda wondering if I'm finally going through that famous mid-life crisis, but whatever it is, it isn't fun - and one of the sad things is that I've not been able to talk to this friend recently, because I feel a responsibility to maintain that mentor persona. Like JD said here about him thinking of Cox like a superhero, from the other side, I feel a need to maintain that facade for this guy, because I don't want my failures to possibly rub off on him in some way. Sounds silly when you write it, but it feels like if you are a mentor to someone, you always need to have the answers for their problems and if you have unanswerable problems of your own, then you strip them of that security that you gave them as a mentor. If that makes any sense!
Dr Acula is a script that JD was writing, I think it's first brought up in S5E6 (My Missed Perception) if you're looking for context. Ideas for for videos for your kids channel 1. Why do people fart? 2. What are stitches/when are they needed? 3. First Aid for - Eye irritant - cuts/scrapes/punctures - strains/sprains 4. When should you get help? Parents? 911? 5. Why do we scratch an itch? What is a better action? 6. Why do we wash our hands? What are germs? 7. How do emotional support animals help?
Alcoholism with doctors in general and during shifts has gotten better quite some time ago. When my uncle started as a doctor somewhen in the 60s/70s, they still had those crazy long shifts and alcoholism was sadly a way of dealing with this and thus a big issue for quite a few doctors back then, including my uncle. And depending on what form of alcoholism you suffer from, you would not be so noticeably drunk as Dr Cox was in this episode.
🔥 Watched a couple of your videos and enjoyed them. Loved Scrubs when it was on TV many years ago and recently watched the whole lot again online. Great show.
It’s funny that you mentioned loving the cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow! You should react to the episode called “My Way Home”. It’s an episode-long reference to The Wizard of Oz and you’ll be delighted to know that their cover makes an appearance. It’s one of my favorite episodes and the end always makes me get all teary-eyed due to Sam Lloyd’s tragic passing. Love your videos, keep going strong!! 🔥
Here in Texas there was a surgeon who got high on cocaine and maimed patients and killed two and the hospital knew he had an issue with cocaine. Didn't do anything about it and to make matters worse the Attorney General of Texas at the time defended the hospital system and later on got a nice donation from a board member of said hospital system for his successful run for governor.
🔥I definitely suggest the Brendan Fraser arc of Season 1 "My Occurrence" "My Hero" and Season 3 "My Screw Up" Also I forgot the fire in the last vid. My mom was the one who showed this show to me, and we quote it at each other a lot lol.
I like this episode. I always thought of it as the episode where JD grew up as a medical clinician. Where him and Doctor Cox became just a little more equal.
I know of a nurse that was an alcoholic and when she relapse she worked while under the influence. Luckily her husband that was a doctor notified the hospital. But it's scary how alcoholics can be so used to alcohol that it's hard to tell they are drunk.
When I was in the US Marines, there was a Navy Doc who would show up to work intoxicated quite often. He was a higher ranking officer so there were only a couple people on base who he reported to. I heard that he was reported a couple of times but always passed his urinalyses and breathalyzer so there were never any consequences. Officers take care of their own. I'm pre-med now, hopefully I won't have to deal with that too much once I'm an MD
The Blanks rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is technically a cover of a cover. They're doing a version first written and performed by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. The Scrubs episode "My Way Home" features them preforming it during the ending. It's really nice. You can hear the Israel Kamakawiwoʻole cover here: th-cam.com/video/V1bFr2SWP1I/w-d-xo.html
When I was in med school in the late 80s and early 90s, I saw so much alcohol (and drugs) at the hospital that we all stopped seeing it as something abnormal. It was just part of our daily lives. Residents, attendants, med students... morning, evenings... weekdays, weekends...
🔥 you were fire too ^^ besides, the idea of educational vids for kids is perfect. Im not a kid so im not really sure what questions might arise but you could ask around pediatry for topics. Dr. Mike had his nephews guest star on a few videos and answered their meidcal questions (kinda^^) Maybe a cool thing would be a video on popular medical misconceptions. Things we all know...that arent actually true. Like over here a lot of people take antibiotics when they catch the flu not realising that doesnt help at all with viruses and makes their suffering even worse 🔥
I love Dr. Cox so much that I bought Dead Head Fred just because John C McGinley voiced him with the same feel of Cox. Game turned out to be really good too~
a small detail that makes the ending better, Dr. Cox called JD by his name, not newbie or a girls name like he normally does
More than just calling him JD, he also thanked him and touched his shoulder. All three things he rarely does for JD.

Fire emoji. 🔥
That reaction was fire! 🔥 🔥 🔥 I love watching you react to scrubs. You do it so well. Educational, but entertaining in a wholesome way. It's great!
Can't get enough of these
The scene with JD and Cox at the end is beautiful
Office Gossip, Hospital gossip, wherever gossip, it really just helps get through the crappiness that can be work.
That ending always get me straight in the feels. Love your reactions.🔥
Nice choice 😃
I feel like we have a secret now that no-one else may ever stumble on. Sometimes the internet is cool like that
Seaso 8 right after Courtney Cox left?
@@duh-pisces8616 Correct. Season 8, episode 8, around the 3:30 mark. I thought it was in the cafeteria, turns out it was the CoM's office.
In the entirety of the show the ending of this episode is my favorite scene because it’s a really rare bonding scene between two characters that you see all the time usually reacting to each other in a more hostile way and it shows a side of Dr. Cox that you only get to see in like three or four episodes throughout the entire run of the show.
Scrubs is my favorite show ever. Of all time. Absolutely love the trend of doctors reacting to it
"Why is gossip addictive?" If I had to guess I'd say it's because humans are such social creatures. Knowing things about the people around you gives you a heads up in social interactions. Humans can also be pretty competitive and knowledge is power. Maybe we're just hardwired to find bits of information about the people around us interesting to a fault.

With a breakdown comes a breakthrough❤ love that quote doctor been having a rough time lately this is a great thing to hear❤❤❤❤
Fox.
Oh yeah that is a good one +1 on that
the ending was so beautiful & love your input 🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Hello Doctor Syl, amazing episode and I’m glad you’re into these!
if I had to recommend another episode that’s a good mixture of medical lingo, surgical stories, emotions, and life lessons.
Might I Recommend:
season 5 episode 7 “My Way Home”
It’s a nice episode that also pays homage to the Wizard of Oz, and has each of the main characters looking for something in particular (medically)
I really loved your reaction to the knife wrench. There was this burning 🔥 urge in me to also start laughing. :D
🔥🔥🔥 :D thanks for the reaction!
Thank you for sharing. All I know is being vulnerable and honest to the right person can be life changing and deepen friendships like nothing else.
Dr Acula is a script that JD was writing, I think it's first brought up in S5E6 (My Missed Perception) if you're looking for context.
Ideas for for videos for your kids channel
1. Why do people fart?
2. What are stitches/when are they needed?
3. First Aid for
- Eye irritant
- cuts/scrapes/punctures
- strains/sprains
4. When should you get help? Parents? 911?
5. Why do we scratch an itch? What is a better action?
6. Why do we wash our hands? What are germs?
7. How do emotional support animals help?
🔥🔥one of the best episodes
Nice reaction! It’s a great episode.
🔥🔥🔥 Another great reaction! 🔥🔥🔥 ps. G'day from Brizzy. 😎
I really loved Ted and I was devestated when I heared that Sam Lloyed passed away
Great episode, great analysis! 🔥 🔥 🔥
🔥Loved this episode of JD pulling his Idol out of that emotional funk he was in.
"We're going to be working til we're 90." That statement hurt, because it's probably true.
Yeah i know my age group will be working into 70’s and that is just f’d up, chances are I won’t live to retire.
That was great. You next should check out the two part episode 3/14 and 3/15 with brendan fraser
I really like your commentary. We need more doctors like you. 🔥🔥🔥
🔥I definitely suggest the Brendan Fraser arc of Season 1 "My Occurrence" "My Hero" and
Season 3 "My Screw Up"
Also I forgot the fire in the last vid. My mom was the one who showed this show to me, and we quote it at each other a lot lol.
"Get yourself a dog, cause Dogs are better"
You sir, have clearly never had a ragdoll cat before. #besthuggers #puppycat
Thank you for what you said at the end it means a lot.
I like this episode. I always thought of it as the episode where JD grew up as a medical clinician. Where him and Doctor Cox became just a little more equal.
After all these years those ending scenes still hit me right in the feels. Great video!
🔥
Thanks for another 🔥 video Dr Syl :)
Since you mentioned The Blanks' cover of Over the Rainbow, you might want to check out the episode My Way Home. Hint hint.
I know of a nurse that was an alcoholic and when she relapse she worked while under the influence. Luckily her husband that was a doctor notified the hospital. But it's scary how alcoholics can be so used to alcohol that it's hard to tell they are drunk.
One of my favorite episodes of scrubs 🔥🔥🔥
There wasn't much medicine. But there was a lot about the experience of being a doctor. So video was worth it I would say.
Another 🔥 reaction. Good stuff
Hope you do a reaction to the final episode of this arc called my dejavu my dejavu which is kind of, it deals even more with the fallout from My Lunch
15:00 I used to go for walks at 03:00 at night. Nobody around, the city is so peaceful. It really helped me get back to a pleasant few hours of sleep.
🔥🔥🔥🔥 nicely done
When I was in med school in the late 80s and early 90s, I saw so much alcohol (and drugs) at the hospital that we all stopped seeing it as something abnormal. It was just part of our daily lives. Residents, attendants, med students... morning, evenings... weekdays, weekends...
Their cover of over the rainbow was on one of the scrubs episodes, not sure which came first but it was a wizard of oz theme
Knife-wrench had me in stitches. As it did the janitor, I guess.
🔥🔥. Really enjoy your scrus reactions. ~they are just very honest and heart felt. and often very inofrmative.
There should be more doctors with kid's channels! Kids have lots of questions that parents can't answer, and a fully qualified physician should do so!
🔥 you were fire too ^^ besides, the idea of educational vids for kids is perfect. Im not a kid so im not really sure what questions might arise but you could ask around pediatry for topics. Dr. Mike had his nephews guest star on a few videos and answered their meidcal questions (kinda^^)
Maybe a cool thing would be a video on popular medical misconceptions. Things we all know...that arent actually true. Like over here a lot of people take antibiotics when they catch the flu not realising that doesnt help at all with viruses and makes their suffering even worse 🔥
I just had a bad weekend in CVICU with lots of death on the unit and what you said about the feel the need for a hug but all the risks involved.
I love Dr. Cox so much that I bought Dead Head Fred just because John C McGinley voiced him with the same feel of Cox. Game turned out to be really good too~
