great video! I personally found Jin Yoshida to be one of the most creepy, the fact that he's in a dive suit just like Simon's and the fact he's almost human looking from afar, makes it horrifying. The crying girl room where you first see her if scary too, intense atmosphere and the uncertainty of why she just stands there almost motionless. Frictional are amazing.
I somehow knew what number one would be, but also didn't expect it at the same time. God. Everything about Terry Akers and the environment you find him in. I love it. It paints such a grim picture. The desolate laboratory hallways and scattered items lying around - like everyone left in a hurry, or was abruptly withdrawn from what they were doing. There's just something so enticing about the atmosphere. It has a certain stillness in the air that wouldn't quite feel the same in any other environment. The fact it's so well lit also stands out to me. It just shows how darkness doesn't necessarily need to be a prevailing factor of spookiness in horror. Terry Akers, sneaking around the level, is like a spider on a wall. Looking down a previously empty hallway and seeing the silhouette of some strange creature suddenly scampering off somewhere else is entirely unnerving.
SOMA was just so f**ing terryfing compared to Amnesia TDD. Amnesia was great in terms of atmosphere and story and yes it definetly was scary and you always felt a certain tension, but man SOMA was just straight terryifing
Good stuff, glad to see Mr. Akers getting the love he deserves!! Even though we never got to see him in Penumbra, I think the Hunter (Wilbur Frisk) is one of the scariest fucking things I've ever had to deal with in any game. Loved encountering him in Necrologue.
the most fearful I have ever been in a frictional game: You sit in a corner, have your eyes to the floor, your flashlight barely lights the dark environment and behind you, you hear the shambling steps of the Flesher walking by, moaning and groaning. You don´t know if he is a couple rooms further, you don´t know whether he is directly behind you, you hear him shuffle all around you, the banging of him teleporting rings in your ears, he could tap you on the shoulder and yet you must not turn around to look, but instead sit in the corner and let it happen That feeling of helplessness was the truest I ever came to horror in any game, good job frictional
I played Amnesia: The Dark Descent through a great couple of times, and still, the kaernk is the only monster from which I am still genuinely afraid of. When near grunts and brutes, I am calm, I know what to do, hence I know the game from in and out. But when the water monster arrives, the darkness, the gloom, the best pushing and most unnerving music I have ever heard, the shadow's manifestation on the walls, the ruined straight hallways with no hiding possibility, the slow but sure chase once you step into the ever flood floor, the splash of water, the inability to see your potential killer, having the unknown to dig into your mind..... the atmosphere, the appearence and the execution of this monster is just the most perfect one I have ever seen in a game. I look emotionless when I get the one hit by the brute, but my heart is beating with 160/minute in my throat and I dare not to look back into the water when the kaernk is near.
100% agree. The kaernk is an absolutely brilliant design. Truly impressive how they made something invisible be so terrifying. A perfect example of how frictional can scare it's players through sheer psychology.
idk man it was kinda lame for me always since for the most part you can just speedrun and he cant get to you. while the grunts could chase you down if dey see ya.
Damn i knew that mah boy Terry is on the first place, in all of the frictional games he is most terrifying creature for me, the sounds, the design and mechanics are scary, but the soundtrack mixed with his screams as he's chasing player is what's terrifying me the most
Brutes are number 1 for me. They are faster than us and can 1 hit ko. I still think the grunt has a scarier design, but the way brutes make u shit your pants is amazing. The water monster would be waaaay down the list. The ST when its chasing is awesome tho. Soma has some crazy good ideas. like robot girl. I never noticed when i was playing that you had to walk really slowly. Soma would be scarier if they put different monsters in the same place. Like fleshers/proxies (which we usually run as fast as we can) and robot girl (gotta to slow down).
I have claustrophobia so for me jinn yoshida is #1, his area was horrible, the dark narrow hallways induced a primal fear in me that was hard to deal with. #2 would be the flesher because he's difficult to deal with and his sounds make my hair raise. Plus the curie is mazelike and even though i played it multiple times i still get lost #3 is akers/proxies (i count them as one) because their chase theme and sounds are probably the scariest of all frictional games #4 the crying lady's design is unnerving and when she starts sprinting i go into panick mode. If you know how to deal with her it's pretty easy but if you screw up it's one of the most horrifying things. #5 the suitors from justine. Their breathing makes me uneasy and the second encounter in the dark cellar is such a narrow escape that it really stuck with me. The fact that it's a onelife gamemode makes it much scarier and the final chase is INTENSE #6 would be the manpigs because their sounds are are absolutely spinechilling. The first encounter under the cathedral was just so amazing and creepy. The one under the pistons was also very difficult for me. If the encounters later on were more intense it would be higher but still a solid creepy enemy #7 would be the infected turngait because they feel highly intelligent compared to the others. You feel like you're being hunted and they often patrol area's very toroughly. Plus that weird sound they sometimes make is disgustingly creepy #8 is the ghoul from rebirth. It's a super creepy enemy type but their encounters are often short. Leon in the hunting grounds was very creepy though and the desert fort kept me on edge the whole time but if i play again i know i only have to worry for final chase because all the others are just scares. First time experience of dessert fort was very scary though #9 construct from SOMA. I know it looks goofy but it's such a lumbering mass that feels intimidating. #10 wraith from rebirth. I'm necesarily scared by them but their sound and looks is just so EPIC! Visually it's their coolest design, just not scary Honorable mention is for tesla pig. Not because it's that scary but the way the lights go out and it appears is such a memorable moment that i had to include it. Another honorable mention goes to anglerfish because it's a brilliant encounter. First they teach you to trust the lights and then they betray you, i jumped so scared first time lol As you can see no TDD Monsters apart from justine and thats because i'm just not fazed by them. If anything i find them funny because they're so stupid and easiy beaten. Partially due to growing up with crazyshootin's trolling amnesia monsters when i was in middle school
Amnesia A Machine for Pigs was not created by Frictional Games but was published by them and continued Chinesse Room with a few things about Alexander. Mandus is Alexander's family and belongs to the Order of the Black Eagle, as there are coats of arms with the heraldry of the Order of the Black Eagle all over the Mandus mansion. This game is related to Amnesia The Dark Descent and continues part of some of the history of the previous game.
I never said it wasn't related to amnesia. I said it's not strictly a game made by FRICTIONAL because it was published by them but not developed. I think the overall disparity in quality is evident due to that fact. I still enjoyed a machine for pigs but the narrative, game design and horror elements weren't quite as good in my opinion.
On a psychological POV, the Anglerfish was, for me, the most terrifying monster of all. I love/hate/fear the abyss stage, you feel extremely vulnerable out there...and the "surprise motherfucker" factor of the Anglerfish was really good...and scarier that anything I've played from Frictional Games. And to be forced to go back to that damn spider crab cave to scape the fish...my god. And you were asking how abyssal fish can be so dumb to fall on such "easy trap" of a light hanging there....well, here you are!
For me suitors are worse than brutes and kaernk is less scary than dogs in Penumbra. I know different people are scared of different things which makes sense and kaernk is way more creative but it shouldn't be SO much higher than suitors. Also the most freaky thing for me were sea monsters in SOMA. It made the game feel like playing Subnautica and Amnesia at the same time.
I can definitely understand your point, the suitors are quite scary. It really comes down to personal opinion in the end and how each monster effects you. Overall though, a massive portion of players were completely stopped in their tracks by the Kaernk and it seemed to cause the most panic out of any other enemy on the list, which is why I placed it so high.
@@y0mi_ I think my opinion is because of the mechanics. When Kaernk first appears, the game tolds you what to do straight away and there's lots of boxes and barrels to jump on so I didn't panic. And while skipping all the freakiness of the suitors, the game tells you "they are blind" but actually they can sometimes see you through walls even if you are quiet and because of this I didn't alwas know what to do.
Akers and the Proxies feel like nerfed Suitors. The Suitor chase in Justine was scarier to me, just the way Amnesia plays worked more in favor with the monster gameplay.
3rd suitor level was THE scariest. The game tells you they are blind and you can sneak past them if you are quiet but it's bullshit. I thought you need to do it slowly (like the game tells you) so I found a REALLY good camping spot which would work against any other enemy but the suitor magically saw me. Through wall. The exact corner where I was hiding. But actually you had to speedrun this level as fast as possible. Terry and Proxies were less scary because they were ACTUALLY blind and not "haha" blind like the suitors.
good video, however i gotta disagree with you when it comes to the placement of the mons on this list. i'd personally put the omicron proxy, brute and suitor at the top 3. either way opinions are opinions.
The list in the video is only my opinion. I'm happy to see what other people have as their scariest monsters too. At least we agree about the brute being top3 (:
Maybe you all ate glue and sniffed Rocks as children but to me amnesia 1 had the scariest enemies. They were just abstract enough to be creepy without completely losing all traces pf a Human form. They looked twisted and in pain and it's not just the animation. They actually look like badly mangled corpses lumbering about. Much more effective than any "zombie" simply because we know the zombie is dead and feels no pain but the monsters.. they come from a whole other world of pain and yet their priority is still onflicting just as much of it onto you
I'm tired of seeing people act like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs doesn't belong in the Firctional Games roster, that's super unfair. I'm sorry, but someone needed to say it. I like the choices you made for your list, but I'd personally have listed most of these enemies differently. Also you forgot to mention the Brutes music. The sounds the Brute makes accompanied by the sounds of its blade dragging behind it as it walks and that music work perfectly together.
I know this video is old and I haven't watched any newer ones from this channel, but my advice would be to try not sounding like you're in as much pain as the deformed humans you're talking about. Hearing someone talk normally after listening to this for 23 minutes is gonna feel like they're yelling at me now.
Tbh i didn't like the amnesia TDD monsters.. I think their design is just stupid and not practical logically. The grunt's mouth is somehow open 1 meter in length lol and his eyes are frog like? And the brute although better but still doesn't seem logical to me but nonetheless, i really love frictional games they're amazing and my favourite game is Penumbra series with elof carpenter and clarence :3 💙💙
I definitely agree. That's why I mentioned the amnesia monsters are a tad goofy looking in better lighting and when close up. I go into it a bit further in my Amnesia Vs. Soma video.
Well, this game was made in 2010. As an Amnesia player still working on TDD, the monsters still really freak me out. If you actually take into attention, playing the game in the dark with no lights on can actually be pretty terrifying.

@MrShiva Just the setting and this incredible loneliness that kicks in at the end is fucking terryfing.
The Stone Worms in Penumbra Overture. Scared the shit out of me.
Good video mate. I loved SOMA so much.
Good stuff, glad to see Mr. Akers getting the love he deserves!!

Absolutely agree. Flesher is one of my favorite monsters ever thanks to its unique interactions and horrible sounds.

Was definitely a hard choice between Terry and Brutes for me. Personally Terry took #1 because being stuck with him in THETA labs was horrific.
I once started running away at Terry encounter because I thought it's Flesher (the Slenderman type of monster) and it ended in a fast K.O.
As soon as you mentioned SOMA I knew that one of its monsters was going to be number 1 and I did have a high suspicion that it was going to be Akers.
Soma, amnesia a dark descent and amnesia machine for pigs is my favorite games
Terry was sad figure, what he wanted and did wasnt that much different from actual ending of the game. But hell it looks creepy from player's view.
