Franz Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata was composed in Vienna in November 1824. The piece was written for the arpeggione, a novel instrument invented just the previous year. The arpeggione was essentially a bowed guitar, and its unique timbre and expressive capabilities fascinated Schubert. At the time of composing the sonata, Schubert was grappling with unrequited love for Caroline Esterházy, the daughter of Count Esterházy. His emotional turmoil and uncertain future as a composer influenced the work. The sonata reflects a blend of sadness and joy, mirroring Schubert’s own life experiences.
Allegro moderato: The first movement begins with a touching theme, characterized by beauty, sensitivity, and lyricism. It contrasts with a carefree and nonchalant second theme, which erupts into a moment of pain akin to Gretchen’s scream during the development section. The movement concludes with a poignant resolution.
Interestingly, the Arpeggione Sonata was not published until 1871, a remarkable 43 years after Schubert’s passing. By that time, the arpeggione had faded into obscurity, but the sonata found new life when cellists discovered that it suited their instrument’s range and timbre. Today, it remains a significant part of cellists’ repertoire.
슈베르트의 아르페지오네 소나타는 새롭게 발명된 아르페지오네(Arpeggione)라는 6개의 현이 있는 악기를 위해 작곡되었습니다. 이 악기는 기타와 첼로를 혼합한 형태로, 기타처럼 활과 프렛으로 연주되지만 무릎 사이에 끼워 첼로처럼 똑바로 연주합니다. 아르페지오네 소나타는 1824년에 작곡되었으며, 빈센초 슈스터(Vincenz Schuster)라는 아르페지오네 연주자를 위해 쓰여졌습니다. 작곡 당시 슈베르트는 병마와 에스테르하지(Esterhazy) 백작의 딸 카롤리네(Caroline)와의 사랑의 아픔으로 상당히 어려운 시기를 보냈습니다. 그러나 지난 여름 달콤했던 카롤리네의 추억을 떠올리며 작곡에 임했고, 이로 인해 곡 속에는 우아한 선율과 헝가리풍의 개방적이면서도 흥겨운 선율이 녹아들게 되었습니다. 이 곡은 원래 아르페지오네라는 악기를 위해 쓰여졌으나, 현재는 보통 첼로(혹은 비올라)로 연주되고 있습니다. 출판은 슈베르트가 세상을 떠난 뒤인 1871년에 이루어졌으며, 이미 아르페지오네가 역사 속으로 사라진 뒤였습니다. 그러나 이 곡이 첼로의 음역과 음색에도 잘 어울린다는 사실이 알려지면서 첼리스트들이 이 곡을 연주하기 시작했고, 현재는 첼리스트들의 주요 레퍼토리로 자리 잡았습니다
1악장: 알레그로 모데라토(Allegro Moderato)
상반된 두 개의 주제가 절묘하게 조화를 이루면서 우아함과 경쾌함을 자아내는 악장입니다. 피아노로 시작되는 제1주제는 다소 처연한 느낌도 들지만 이내 첼로에 의해 우아하게 연주됩니다. 이어 명랑하고 세련된 제2주제가 밝은 기운을 선사합니다. 그리고, 두 주제는 서로 교차되다가 서정적인 코다로 끝을 맺습니다.
