really nice old clocks have this mechanism. the concept can also be in 2D to fit within fine old pocket watches where the shaft with a flywheel rotates within a coil spring for the timing

    Interesting.
So, if I replace the elastic band with an Arduino controlled BLDC motor (to control weather spinning or staying) I could in theory make an electronic one that would not depend on the rubber band?
I could sense weather the contact is made between the ball and the pole by means of using an electrically conductive cable, poles, and my Arduino. It should be normally tied to ground, but connected to Vcc whenever contact is made. I guess it could be connected the other way around too.
Then, the BLDC should be made to spin only when contact is not made!

But when the ball unravels, it pushes against the direction of rubber band tension, creating chaotic movement. Could this be fixed to the same direction somehow? Other than that it acts nicely.

There is a clock in the Leonardo Da Vinci museum in Rome that is powered and controlled by the same flying pendulum

According to Newton 3rd Law For Every Action, there is opposite equal & opposite Reaction, here this pendulum working on same principle, This is Basic idea, on this base we can go for next step innovation, Nice Innovative video sir.

I'm wondering as well. As a kid I accidentally built something similar, this video brings back some memories.
      Put a stopwatch on this : )
