- World Record | Men's 200m Backstroke | Swum by Japanese superstar Ryosuke Irie at the Australia vs Japan Duel in the Pool meet in Canberra on Sunday 10 May 2009 | His time of 1:52.86 took more than a second off Ryan Lochte's previous world record of 1:53.94 | Arguably the best backstroke technique the world has ever seen | He was wearing a new Arena swim suit thou, which as yet, is still pending FINA approval | This footage has been taken from Channel One HD Australia | If this is a breach of copyright, please advise and I will remove the footage |
2:51 Note his feet-tapping kick
Most beautiful backstroke I've ever seen. By far.
Absolutely unbelievable.
i mimicked his stroke at my meet today and dropped 5 seconds in my 100 back, thats an amazing tecnique
Watching his technique under the water is really impressive.
Great swim by Irie. In the 100m backstroke, Irie had one outside lane clean and swam a very good time. This time, in the 200m backstroke, Irie did not have a clean outside lane and swam under 1:53.00. Great swim, left me in awe!
Damn smooth stroke.
Poetry in motion.
Beautiful swim, poetry in motion... Too bad it wasn't approved because of the suit (Arena X-Glide, FINA said it had to be modified to be approved). Hoping Irie will break it again in Rome :)
There's no way the arena suit alone could make that much of a difference. Besides, Lochte was wearing a LZR when he broke the record which is right on the level with the arena.
what a technique!
OMG!
He still swam a 1:54.09 in the 200 back in an LZR a month later, so it's not just the suit, kids. You say what you want about him, he's the future of backstroke. His technique is impeccable. Go watch the video of Wildeboer and then watch this. There's no splash in Irie's stroke because he's so damn efficient. That's how he can still swim within .15 of Lochte's record which he did in an LZR
Ryosuke Irie es uno de los pocos nadadores que logra una total armonia con el agua en dorso
His head position is slightly high but not drastically, it appears higher than it is due to the small amount wash around him. His finish didn't suck, He didn't lunge but it wouldn't of made it any quicker. His kick isn't fluid cause it would take away from his arm length. There's not one stroke which suits everybody. his strokes going to be different considering his one of the only swimmers under 6foot and he's pretty much the lighest swimmer i've heard of at 64kg.
Perfect!
yes the suit can make a whole second of difference. Irie is a phenomenal backstroker but now Aaron Peirsol is still the best backstroker eventhough Rome is gonna be intense.
eh, it was my first time swimming it since last year, but i didnt expect to drop 5, LC 1:15 to 1:09, but i assume i did alright because i beat our backstroker
The swim is obviously great. He has amazing technique. However i was talking to some coaches that have done work out at the olympic training center. This suit is the new arena suit I believe. Its not been admitted yet (and it probably won't be). The coaches I have spoken to feel that at this level this suit can make upwards of 2-3 seconds a 100 difference. If anyone has heard anything on the suit would love to hear it.
Like it 👍🙆♂️
会場の拍手があたたかい
the make you more buoyant, therefore you are out of the water more, therefore having less resistance, therefore having better technique. 6th grade science man
this swim is inspirational for me
course he hav for me the best backstrocker in the actuality
通訳酷すぎだろwwww
田中けいすけ それw
幻の世界新
he still wouldve gotten the world record because his personal best was 0.08 off lochte's record
lol the translator at the end didnt understand a word the australian was saying, so he translated everything wrong
australian guy: "your head is so still in the race, how do you practice that?"
translator: "how do you keep your head so focused pre-race?" LOL
200fly peirsol not gonna destroy and why you dont swim agains me lets see if u can breack 200 backstroke record come on sucker gay
He have a really nice fluid techniche
nah, everyone who put one on says it gives you better technique. But Irie does has the best backstroke technique in the world
Wait is it only me or is everyone except Stockel that kicks just 15m? Because if you look at the replay in slow motion you see that everyone kicks over 15m. Or is the red mark not 15m?
No, the Arena is more effective than the LZR. In fact in Rome, whoever wears LZR would be at a big disadvantage to those using Arena or Jaked. But he did beat Lochte at Rome.
well what i did was exaggerate the finish of my stroke, as you can see his pull is very strong underwater and he is also getting alot of surface area out of the way he bends his arms, but he has a very wide kick which takes alot of work and alot of ankle flexibility
@markk124 I don't understand why FINA didn't approve it either. This isn't even a full body suit. FINA approve full body suit record but not this. Do you not see what they are trying to do??
hi im the tranlator of ryosuke and he wants swim against you he says you dont have any world record
no it doesn't. if you're thinking about speed and buoyancy then yes, it does help a little bit. but technique is a different story.
No they don't, no one ever says that. I used to wear them, that's the most stupid thing I've ever heard.
the suit wont slice of 1.08 secondes maybe if you compaire the suit with a naked body
What do you mean it doesn't matter, i'm pretty sure holding a world record for any amount of time is pretty big.
The 200 backstroke is gonna be pretty intense, what are your thoughts about it? who'd you say is the favorite? Lochte, Peirsol or Irie.
the translator misunderstood the last question when the guy asked about why his head was so still.
pero el mejor es Aaron Peirsol, que el mejor dorsista de la historia.
just read that his record was not officially recognized by FINA because of the suit he had on
the translation could've been better for the interview..! err
daniel madwed north baltimore?
What exactly did you do? Could you explain Irie's kick?
hey i saw your video in swimnetwork
congratultions
and congratulations for peirsol
This guy is at ncs sc senior championships meet in Greensboro. 1:42 200 back easily
TTT311 I was there warming up in the lane next to him and didn't even realize it

doesn't matter, it wouldn't be the wr right now anyway
ya it going to be close between him and Peirsol
ya it was unofficial so no world record
Yes ,1.59 but in the 100m maybe. Lol.

um... aaron peirsol.
thats pretty legit
omg his technique is flawless
its funny because it does
LOLOLOL seriouslY?
lol translator fail
whats your name?
whats your name?
WOWZERZ!!!!!!!!!!!
unique
amazing !!
UMMISSILE!!
i dont think its the suit, look at his technique
Americans are shaking in their Speedos!
while his head doesn't move, it's incredibly high out of the water, his finish sucked, his kick is not fluid and it's way too big.
his wearing a half body suit from waist to legs, his legs are completely under the water with or without it, pretty interesting that his "out of the water more". that suit doesn't raise his upper body out of the water when it's only covering his legs Einstein. it makes his legs slightly more buoyant but his stroke still looks exactly the same with or without the suit.
he's not gonna take the gold tomorrow
