I just found out that 9 of my 10 favorite drummers were Hal Blaine!

same here 9 of my 10 favorite drummers was Hal Blaine . i kept wondering how could there be so many great drummers in the 60's ? finally i heard they were mostly Hal Blaine. Ringo Star was also much like Hal, understood rhythms and beats but never studied note values just naturally gifted. Hal of course could read drum notation which is a asset to most drummers. thank you

He was my Uncle and a cool dude.
If ever in Palm Springs, check out his Star on sidewalk near the library. Star ceremony was one day after what would have been his 94th birthday.

I am a drummer and drum instructor, and I can tell you that, while this is a commercial, "crowd-pleasing" album; that through the dubbed-in fake crowd noise-- there is still some excellent technical drumming here also by Hal-- especially on track 1--Topsy! He had a great feel. That is why he was in demand as a session drummer. Earl Palmer was a fantastic session drummer also.

As I listen it seems you are correct. Hall was not a Gene Krupa/Buddy Rich type - he played _with_ the music.

Joe it was Earl Palmer who helped Hal Blaine in starting out and getting himself established. He said in several interviews how grateful he was to Earl for doing that for him. Very humble man.

You hit the nail on the head. Hals playing sounds deceptively simple but his groove was as solid as the Rock of Gibraltor, and his accents and fills are brilliantly appropriate to the music.
As a drummer I’m still impressed by his creativity on many of his recordings. His fills became an integral part of the recording.

Like the way Hal uses his crash cymbal intro's, holding back volume, crash control, almost like a ride crashing, adding full crash, only when needed, similiar unique, style can be heard with The Ventures, + Booker T. + The M.G.'s drummers.

yes classic drum tone open not much or no drum muffling on the toms,..great drum breaks & tasteful accents& intro rolls,..
i opened for the VENTURES in 1984 at the Marble Bar in Downtown Balto, Md..Ok,now picture this .. a trashy basement bar, with a larger than life history,..but now, all walls were painted Black,.holes in bathroom walls, local& big label band stickers in the bathroom,Long White marble Bar in the back,..of the room,..
stage was 24" above the floor ,.it was a great night met them before& afterwards had them sign one of their classic LP'S .haha
