      Thank for your appreciation!.
      I was there in Stockholm in 1967 and heard him play on a Jazz festival there. It was broadcasted in the Swedish Radio, and I taped it (50 years ago(!). Recently I digitized all my tapes - the Swedish Radio has "archived" i.e. thrown away almost every old tapes they had.
      The result of my digitizing is a 57 Mb mp3 file. The quality is excellent, it's also still in the right pitch. Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond and Joe Morello (forgot the name of the bass player) played these songs: Take the A Train, Take five, S.t Louis Blues, and Kyoto' song.
      Dave Brubeck presents all titles himself. I remember they came in late at night, they were very tired and one of them was carrying a little baby on stage.
      I would be happy to send it to you via Sprend (permits up to 2 Gb files) but I think I need an email address. Please send a msg to me:
      jurlinder@gmail.com,
      and I'll return the Brubeck session to you. I am almost shure I am the only person on the world who has this recording. Keep swingin'

    Hey Kent are you using stock changes for this one? I think Bill Evans altered these from what I hear. But I am using Em,Fmaj7, B7, CMaj7, Fmaj7, Emajto Em. Bridge - Am7, FMaj7 (twice) Dm7, G7, Cmaj7, FMaj7. Messing around with the E double harmonic minor, which kind of follows the head. Mike Stern does a cool version of this where he gets really outside but comes back in strong. Any thought on some harmony for this one?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bruce, I changed a few things putting the B melody note on the B7 and carrying over to the Cmaj7#5. That's not in the original version but I heard Richie Beirach do that. He loves those maj 7#5 chords. Whatever happened to him? Did you see my video on a Mike Stern tune?

    Hi Kent.It is probably a dumb question, but I like to know what the bassist play if the pianist is playing modals.Would he play modals too or just the normal harmonic changes of the tune?Thanks.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say for the most part the bass is going to lock down the roots and chord tones. If there's an important shift in harmony, he might go with it. But the tension between the out chords and in grounding is what makes it interesting and special.

    Excelllent! I've been listening to Bill Evan's recording and I think that on the solos he neve plays a E major on bar 7, he always plays E minor. On the head, however, he does play that major chord. If anyone has some insights or thoughts about this, I would like to hear them.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The tuner is coming tomorrow. We tune the piano 4 times a year. Your comment came in during the change of weather when winter is approaching and it's cold outside and inside the heat comes on...which causes the piano to start to go out of tune. Otherwise we are sticklers....and as a rule we don't need reminders.

    Kent, does the 2-5-1 progression for key changes apply in the various modes?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be referring to something more like "secondary dominants", to move from one tonal center to another, maybe just temporary rather than modulations.

    Thank you for the video and I am also wondering about the same question as Spero, can we introduce Dorian mode?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not Dorian. More like Aeolian because I don't want a C#. I use a 2nd mode D pentatonic which has an F#. There's also a G# at the end of the melody so I add a G# to the Phrygian mode and to the Cmaj7 chord(#5). The B7 has a 13 and b9 which matches up with the Cmaj7#5 nicely. This really needs another tutorial on scales and alterations. Scales/modes are just ways to use approach and target tones. (I could say chromatic scale, but grounded in E Phrygian.)

    At 6:47 you talk about an E Phrygian. Then I need to think about a flat nine at the bass, right? It's a new voicing for me. Do you think it's a good idea to learn it in all twelve keys or this modal playing is mainly used for "C major" scale (white keys)?

    • @marcopepe4046
      @marcopepe4046 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, thank you.

    • @KentHewittpiano88

      Like I showed, play 4th voicings built on C major scale w/ E the root. Learn Phrygian scale in all keys...but for this one you only need white notes in the scale. More important are approach and target tones (see darina below).

I went through it a half dozen times and managed to work out the main points. I only heard 2 Modes listed - E Minor Phrygian and a very quick reference to Lydian. You obviously know your stuff.
