I’ve listened to every one of your podcasts and have heard enough of your “hard lessons learned” to feel the need to add this comment, “Now don’t break the new tractor!” Haha! I’m just teasing you, hopefully you got that. I’m fellow Iowa farmer (up by Northwood). From the way you describe yourself, our personalities are very much alike. When I get into something I’m full force into it. I research topics of interest like you too. I raise chickens, turkeys, pigs, and I’m trying sheep this year on pasture. Our farm is The Thomas Farmstead.
I enjoy following you! Keep doing podcasts and videos!

Thanks for listening to the podcast ... you know very well if you have been listening to the podcast about me and hard lessons learned! Also, great to have a listener from Iowa :)

6:49 you are spot on. In November it'll be 3 years that we've been dairying and it would be very difficult without family & friends.

Yep, my family and neighbors have been there from the very beginning for us. Without them we would have been done by year two! Still interested in learning more about your dairy! Do you direct market? Sell to a conventional market? Process yourself? Have a more specialty type of market?

@@TheBeginningFarmer It was our intention to have a raw milk/direct market dairy of 12 cows but after talking to other producers they say if your not delivering or going to farmers markets then your home washing bottles and with a young homeschool family that wasn't an option. An Amish friend of mine told me to think about shipping to Organic Valley and that is what we ended up doing. We would love to do some on-farm processing in the future but only if the kids want to do something like that. I also have a sawmill and woodworking shop that I've done almost right out of high school. We are planning on putting in a poultry processing operation with the hopes of generating enough extra income to bring our 19 yr old son back to the farm. He's made a couple videos. I tried to post one to a comment for you to see but I'm techno-amish and it must not have worked.

@@throwback336 That is awesome that you ship to Organic Valley! We have a homeschool friend in the area that also ships to O.V. and to be completely honest if we had more land I may have been more seriously considering that possibility. The direct marketing options for fluid milk in Iowa are practically non-existent ... way to much regulation!

Today was windy and cool and I was moving some dusty bedding ... I missed the cab :)

How do you haul a 4430 with a trailer and pickup truck?

We’re going to wait until we can use my cousins friends semi ... so not until after harvest or when there is a break because of weather.
