- California Soul live performance is enhanced with 1997 digitally remastered CD-audio. The 5th Dimension five original members are Billy Davis, Jr., Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson.
The Fifth Dimension 1968 pop hit was written by Ashford & Simpson for the group's albums Stoned Soul Picnic and The Essential 5th Dimension. The group received a gold record for their album Stoned Soul Picnic, which also contained major hit singles with Laura Nyro's songs "Stoned Soul Picnic" (U.S. #3) and "Sweet Blindness" (U.S. #13).
Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis come in our store in Beverly Hills sometimes. They are the nicest people and she is still beautiful!
This is when music was truly a universal sound with plenty of substance.

Between '67 and '72 the 5th Dimension were seen all over TV in just about every format of the time, Late nite, Variety, Teen music shows, Educational (I believe they were even on Sesame Street), even prime-time drama shows of the day (It Takes A Thief). Any time they showed up on television in the 60's (which was quite often) I always fixated, for some reason, on Florence LaRue. Yes this 11 y.o. white boy had a major crush on Miss Florence LaRue!
They also did a TV commercial for Jell-O, which ran in 1970. I think I've seen it on TH-cam.

The first album I ever bought was either their first "Hits" collection... or the Jackson Five's - I can't quite remember which. They were such a great act. Such strong voices in solo (Ron, in particular) but dang, when those kids wanted to blend, they were the best in the business. (Lookin' at you, Flo!!)! All that said, this is kinda funny, watching Lamont do his best to remember lyrics and choreography at the same time. Been there, I know.

Marilyn and Florence are breathtakingly beautiful but also insanly gifted vocalists. Todays talent free autotune generation of female artists should study these black music giants to see what real star power looks like. 5D are true next level artists.
They are certainly an absolute treat for the eyes and ears . (& both still are to this very day! )
They both won beauty pageants in their youth. Gee, wonder why. They'd look good in potato sacks. Great voices too.

Their voices are so rich & powerful.& when it comes to harmonizing, they were in a class by themselves. Only the Mama's & the Papa's come close.
Marilyn hosted The Midnight Special, Solid Gold, and CBS New Year's Rockin Eve for years.
She and Billy Davis, Jr have been married over 50 years.

Side note: those two girls were drop dead gorgeous and were a welcome distraction away from the typical teenage pressures. Or, did they actually cause other types of teenage pressure? 🤔

Seems to me that Marilyn and Ron are the real movers; considering the soulful moves they make with their bodies. But, that aside, the individual group member's voice control and range are the best; each and everyone of them. We're all very fortunate for all the entertainment they've provided over so many years.

And very talented too. Actually, they were both discovered while winning the same talent portion of the Ms Bronze California beauty contest (consecutively). I love their video of "Sweet Blindness". Personally I recall being 12 in 1969 and hearing all that great music when it was new. People that weren't alive back then just can't know that it was really like.

Everywhere I went in the sixties and early 70's I carried my AM radio with me. There was just too much great music to get it all on the radio. A great time to be alive indeed.

The arrangement and harmonies were great. Marilyn and Flo were beautiful and classy. I recently came across this song and I've been playing it over and over. Remember it a as kid. Great memories living through that era.

I wasn't even thought of back then. However, love the music through the 1960s/1970s. The music was so "beautifully" expressed by all those that made music back then. "I certainly know good music when I hear it."
This is a nice song and video. I love the groovy clothing their wearing. One of my favorite song is "Aquarius/Let the sunshine."

You will find California Soul by the 5th Dimension on Crusin' 1969 with four other songs from December 1968 and January 1969, like Everyday People by Sly & The Family Stone, Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundation, Abraham, Martin, & John by Dion, plus music from the 1950's like Tequila by the Champs in 1958, Oh, What a Night by the Dells (original version from 1956, etc. It's a good thing I did not buy that album and Crusin' 1969 is not fair too well as Crusin' 1955 to 1968.
An extremely successful group that didn't have to show lots of skin to sell lots of records.
