      Social media has turned a lot of people into insufferable inepts obsessed with having the last word, the perfect comeback line and the right argument. So much so that the nuance needed to understand the levity of any social issue is completely drowned out in favour of wit-measuring contests.
      I'm so sick of debate-culture. It's so easy to take a rethorical stance from the sidelines, running your mouth about ultimately useless crap like "fallacies" and "sources" while the real issue happens. I'd rather prioritize the opinions of people whose investment in any social matter extends beyond "haha I'm right and you're wrong, stupid".

    • @derpteknic
      @derpteknic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      @@AlexAustralis what first comes to mind is that certain behaviours increase your likelyhood of being sexually assaulted and in general people continue the same behaviours, for instance people who go to parties are at higher risk and they continue to go to parties compared to people who never leave the house, or people who form relationships with abusive people and continue to do so (or stay with the person), people who frequently engage is random sexual activity vs people who don't. Probably other significant factors too. People shouldn't have to change their behaviour when it's something as innocuous as going out late etc.

    • @AlexAustralis
      @AlexAustralis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      @@bruhxd253 can't tell if you're serious or are meming off of D's take.
      But if it's the first one and you're seriously asking, try following this hypothetical: Imagine that something akin to these statistics existed for people who were hit by drunk drivers running red lights through no fault of their own (it's 30x more likely to happen again after the first time). Would you tell the people who were hit to stop driving - something that is a very common and (for some) enjoyable activity?
      Of course you wouldn't - it is a borderline necessary part of human life for many people - the problem is the drunk drivers. Even though you could find a way to push the blame onto the victim of the unethical and dangerous behaviour by saying something like "Well maybe if you'd still looked both ways before you went," every sensible person should be able to see the error with that line of thinking. Sure, there might be small things that you could do to lessen the chance of a crash or sexual assault, but the onus shouldn't be on the victim - we shouldn't have to worry about people sneakily removing condoms mid-sex, nor should we have to worry about behing hit by people who are driving while drunk, because they are all behaviours that any reasonable adult should find abhorrent, dangerous, and unethical. Victims should not be the ones facing punishment for the heinous actions of others.

      @@AlexAustralis I haven't looked it up, but my guess would be in part that most people are assaulted by people they know. In that scenario, it becomes obvious how multiple assaults would take place at such a high rate.
      Also, sexual abuse can mess with your ability to function in various ways, leaving you vulnerable in ways you might not have been before. If you're being repeatedly targeted by one person, they're going to leverage your first assault against you in order to make it easier to do it again. If it is multiple different assaults, it may be that the victimization has made you more vulnerable to attack; victimizers may even be sharing information on who they targeted with each other.

    Another thing that I think needs to be mentioned, Destiny's claim to " Not have casual sex at all" is doubly invalid because a PARTNER could do this to you too! You could be in a relationship, ask your partner not to stealth and they do it anyway and you stay with them because you're dependent on them or you're afraid to leave. You could even ONLY have sex with intimate long term partners, split up with them after they assault you, and still have a problem when another partner does it! I think another big problem with destiny's arguments is that he conflates maturity with confidence and being confrontational which, in my opinion is pretty much just peak toxic masculinity. but it also puts victims in a situation where they need to be held to a frankly impossible standard, where they basically have to always make an attempt to confront abusers regardless of the circumstances even when such actions could be lead to fatal outcomes, or else they're weak and it's their fault. it'd be like saying a mugging victim was a weak pussy and shouldn't go outside because they didn't work out, train in self defense and act tough enough to deter from being mugged, and subsequently didn't try hard enough to disarm the mugger. it's literally just garden variety victim blaming.

    This is most articulate & understanding piece on the nature of SA that I've ever come across. Most people who have never experienced assault don't seem to understand that the moment a sexual partner has indicated that they aren't concerned with your safety, the threat is immense. Your objections likely won't matter, because they've already demonstrated that they don't care about your safety, needs or desires. If they're willing to SA you, they might be willing to beat you or unalive you, especially if you try to interfere with their actions. People experiencing assault recognize this and try to reduce the harm caused to themselves by complying. Not fighting back doesn't mean a person didn't want to fight back - it means they couldn't, for fear of losing life or limb.

I guarantee you that a good chunk of these people would be like "Well if you felt he might have gotten violent, you shouldn't have said anything and just reported it after." Literally they will make up an excuse for any situation. No matter what the victim does, even if it's something they would explicitly advise that victim to do in a tweet thread, will ever be the "correct" course of action as long as an imperfect outcome is achieved. As a woman who has been sexually assaulted, I can say that not only is it hard to confront someone who assaulted you, it’s sometimes hard to tell if you have even been assaulted. In my case, I was pressured into sex I didn’t want to have, was cut off from the exit, and he forced his hand down my pants with me wriggling away for a while until I relented and let him do what he wanted. It took me literal years to figure out that I had been raped because my exposure to the idea of assault was “it’s when a man beats you and forces you down and it’s violent and traumatizing”, but in my case I wasn’t physically injured, I experienced some physical pleasure, and I had “given consent”. Sexual assault happens in so many different ways and forms and girls are so encouraged to just “go with it”, it can be impossible to rationalize in your own head that it wasn’t ok, let alone tell the person who felt so entitled to your body as to violate you without a second thought.

These acts can just as easily be perpetrated by the people you trust. If you grow up in a sketchy environment, you're surrounded by sketchy people, and sketchy seems normal and inevitable.

    When I was raped I didn't even really process it until I was talking about my history with one of my current partners. It took me almost a decade to realize that when my ex-wife woke me up by being on top of me when I was too exhausted to even consider the possibility of consenting, was me being sexually assaulted and the fact that I ended up with some trauma resulting from that event.

      @haleymilbrodt8080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I'm not going to tell YOU how to interpret your situations personally because I don't know the circumstances behind it. But I would generally consider the pressure and coercion to be SA. The definition of consent includes that it must be enthusiastic and ongoing between all parties involved. I also just kinda think the phrase "fully assaulted" contributes to other people refusing to come forward about personal stories where they may have been gaslit or manipulated in some way. Again, I have no clue about your personal experiences, I'm just saying we need to be careful about how we talk about SA in a general sense.

    • @linzlsleepy1627
      @linzlsleepy1627 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was also coerced, and one hundred percent the times I’ve mentioned it to later partners they’ve said something along the lines of oh, you should communicate more. Never mind that I said no at least ten times and he kept pushing and I cried during. It’s very disheartening to share it with people and not have them understand how powerless or manipulated I felt in the moment. I didn’t know what to do and couldn’t see the situation clearly until afterwards.
      Victim blaming just makes it that much easier for those people to do what they do.

    Destiny totally ignores that fucking FREEZING UP is a very normal and common response to being sexually assaulted. "if you are noticing someone is about to sexually assault you and you can't say anything, you probably don't have the emotional maturity..."
    uhhhh no. the thing is, you're probably so shocked that this person is doing something terrible, when you thought they were a nice and safe person, that you freeze in the moment. that's not emotionally immature, it's just natural fight/flight/freeze and your brain picked freeze...

  • @ListlessLion

    I think a huge problem here is that giving "advice" online is often unconstructive and victim-blamey, especially if you're not even attempting to be at all kind about it.
