  • Here are a few simple exercises for amputees to improve their strength to benefit their walking and balance! These are essential exercises to master as part of the recovery after lower limb amputation.
    This video is part of our amputee exercise series, demonstrating simple exercises that can be done at home! Special thanks to Cosi Belloso, MSPT for collaborating in this series of videos!

      I have left non dominant side hemipelegia which cost me all use of function of my left arm and hand. My PT & doctor suggested I consider amputation. I had a shoulder disarticulation amputation in May 2023. My left knee is buckling and has caused several falls with minor injuries. I am continuing PT but I don't think they
      "get it"
      Do you have any suggestions?

    Hi. Im an AKA, left leg. And for a few months now, i feel pain in right knee, ankle and bottom of foot. Is there any exercises you recomendó to end less tire by the end of the week?

      With an amputation on the left side, your right side will definitely take more weight and stress. Anything you do to improve your balance and control on the left side will help to some degree. Then make sure you are stretching the right side regularly to alleviate soreness. Depending on your health conditions you may also consider seeing a physician to determine the cause of the pain.

    Hello,
    I'm a below knee amputee, was bedridden for 1 year the muscles in my amputated legs were fully torn because of the accident. My left hand and amputated right leg went stiff. Although I've recovered my hand movements, my right knee is still not bending. The right knee at first was straight as a pole, but now (3 years in) gives almost 40-50° bend. Haven't reached 90° yet. Hence I have to take my prosthetics off each time I get into a car. And I can't ride as pillion on any bike or scooter.
    Any tips on how to overcome this, I am really looking forward to get back to riding my bike .
    Thank you,

    • @MissionGait
      @MissionGait  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am assuming that you are an above knee amputee based on what you are describing. This is a really common issue that generally comes from one of two things. 1: A prosthetic socket with improper fit or not having enough prosthetic socks. 2: Weakness in the hip musculature that presents when you put the weight into that side. In the case of the former, consult your prosthetist to determine how to get a better fit. For the latter, exercises such as weight shifting ( th-cam.com/video/gjDRIqUPLSk/w-d-xo.html ) and mat exercises are key ( th-cam.com/video/x8H3SRq1L8w/w-d-xo.html ).

      @@MissionGait first of all thx for replying..i got amputation through knee about 29 years back when i was just 2 years old..once i got an x ray done for my residual limb as i was having pain due to schiatic nerve compression..then i got to know that my thigh bone and acetabulum cavity are bit apart and not perfectly encapsulated as it is normaly..
      So i think i will try the exercises as suggested by you..thnx alot..🙂

      Hi, it certainly is not easy to overcome the struggles of an amputation. If you have not yet looked into some other resources, we recommend checking into the amputee coalition: www.amputee-coalition.org/
