    This show is partly inspired by what it felt like for the creator to be put in the wrong class and meet theater kids for the first time and that never stops being funny to me.
    It also puts Horse's transformation in a different perspective! That experience convinced her to pursue a career in art! In other words, an overwhelming, but ultimately good experience that left her a different person than before.

      My first watch thru CW, I fell asleep a lot(not the show's fault). So, I read about it. Rewatching it with the knowledge "this is what it's like for a normal person to meet theatre kids for the first time...." Accurate. Very accurate. We seem like a whole different species, a collection of misfits, and it is TRUE. Also true that much of the goofy whimsy of theatre folk is coping with serious issues, also very true.

    An implication of this show that shows up is the Shamans representing the 5 stages of grief. Whether you believe the Shaman's personalities, or the emotions Horse is feeling in that moment, it's adaptable to your thoughts. The show touches on grief a lot, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was intentional.

    • @sesquipedalian8909
      @sesquipedalian8909 3 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      It parallels almost chronologically. The first shaman, Waterbaby, had Horse *denying* she was "ugly-crying". It also featured her trying to chase down Geffrey-Rider, still believing that they were together somehow. The Tree shamans were then kicked down by Horse in *anger*, followed by Horse *bargaining* their freedom through jokes to Judge Jacket the mole-taur. She also *bargains* with her tail and learns to compromise with the sudden magical addition to her body. When Horse has to win over Johnny Teatime, she sings a song of self-*acceptance*, and stops trying to resist change and begins to let herself grow as an individual. Finally, when confronting the Whaletaur, Horse is at her lowest of lows, and fears all the changes she has undergone will make her unrecognizable, and instead of dealing with her *depression*, chooses to be swallowed up by the Whaletaur.
      The five stages of grief don't necessarily have to be in order, but that's how I interpreted your statement.

    I agree that I love how even though Centaurworld IS wacky and fun and colorful, everyone feels real. Even down to the secondary characters, who I feel like could easily bleed into each other(especially in the first couple episodes), are fairly distinct. Zulius being the obvious example here. He’s not just oblivious and random, he’s self absorbed and dramatic. But he’s also a team player who in the absence of Horse or Wammawink, is the one to point out when somethings wrong. He also is older than and has more experience in the world than the other secondary characters. And he’s had one episode where he was a focus character! I hope at least a couple of the others get a focus episode in the series going forward.

    • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah thats what i love about shows like this. There is a special place between straight up serious and goofy cartoon logic antics. Centaurworld strikes that pretty much perfectly. I can't remember another show that did so well. Other stuff tends to go too far into one side, usually wackiness or just doesn't delve deep enough into the themes that give it substance.

    Dude I need this. It's just more satisfying to cry with someone while watching the show. 😅
    Your theory about the woman and the Nowhere King having had a Rider-Horse relationship before is spot-on. I got the same vibe from "Nothing Good" and from their confrontation later on.
    In the song, she sings that love "kills and betrays." I don't think this necessarily means the Nowhere King betrayed her. But I think her love for him is what created their situation.
    I think her "Horse" must have died, and she travelled to Centaurworld to find a way to bring him back, which is how she acquired magic. Except her plan didn't work out, and she accidentally created a monster.
    So when the Nowhere King says that she has come to free him, I sort of got the feeling that he wanted to be freed from existence.

She’s decided that they’re making the same sentimental mistakes she did.

    Choosing a whale for that metaphor was beautiful because death has that duality of being horrifying and, in a strange way, beautiful and whales and the ocean are both a beautiful thing and terrifying when you're spending more time thinking about of and how s*cide is idealized in some people's minds and they can't see another way out and the people who can see so much more and can't stand the thought. Even Sunfish's arcade being a distraction, but not a solution. I didn't even think about her bandages on her wrists until you mentioned it, I just thought they were a pretty addition to her design and not the tragedy that it could be connected to. Really, that entire episode had a lot of balance in the topic of death/s*cide might have in real life.

      @@slakinof a lot of ppl (including me) theorize that the (currently) unnamed human (witch?)married a centaur,and that deertaur was the Nowhere king before he got corrupted,hence the title:Nowhere KING
      Her and the centaur were the queen and king of a kingdom on the human world,and their love was what brought peace to both centaurs and humans,in the lyrics of the song Nothing good (the human's song) she talks about being betrayed by love:"LOVE is a spark,cast into water (...)it shines trough the dark burns ever hotter,then KILLS and BETRAYS". And about how the ppl that you love the most are often the true monsters:"sometimes the ones we love the most have the worst things to hide,sometimes the monsters turn out to be those who stood there by your side".
      This gives us an idea of what her relationship with the Knowhere king could be,she loved him,he hid dark secrets and intentions from her,and when she discovered what of a monster he was it was too late,she cursed him (maybe)trapped him in the in between and managed to get to centaurworld and escape,maybe wathever he did is what caused the minotaurs to invade both worlds

    • @slakinof
      @slakinof 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sapphicferret9117My only criticisms of that idea (and I think it is mostly a sound theory) is I think it paints the Mystery woman in too clean of a light, I think there has to be more to it. When she paints on the mural in the Beertaur cave, she does straight up crush in her hands a Ladybugtaur with no remorse what so ever to use as paint. Also the Nowhere King says "she has come to release me" and instead of rushing for the door, gives her a clean shot for what I would assume would kill him. And I think that was genuine, so I can't see the nowhere king being purely evil and hiding it all along. I could be wrong though. She could also be speaking in double terms with her song. She could be both referring to what the Nowhere King did AND what she did in kind. They have done some great work with the reprisals of songs throughout the series and having the recontextualised, so would be interesting to see if this song makes a return in season 2. We've also only seen platonic and family love in the series so far. Or atleast nothing that has given Catradora vibes. Not saying they couldn't have been King and Queen and married etc, just interesting since we havent been given a positive example of romantic love and there is already implications of insidious romantic love.
      Besides that, I mean, maybe the deetaur and the woman managed to fight off the Minotaur the first time, and then the Nowhere King released then into the human world sometime later.

    I know for animation videos you often go to family or all-age shows, but if there's room for more mature shows, I'd like to recommend Beastars.
    Now for some centaurwolrd talk/discussion! Spoilers below for folks that haven't seen the whole show.
    I love how the Mystery Woman's (MW) song ends up showing Wammawink's character growth. From Glendale's interlude in the opening/title song, we learn that Centaurworld isn't free of sadness or trauma, it's just denied or hidden. Every location or group we see has their own way of dealing with the war and its aftermath- the Cattaurs explicitly say they get into pageantry to mask the devastation, the moletaurs have resorted to extreme isolationism, etc.
    In that context, the bubble around the dome and Wammawink's extreme protectiveness is re-contextualized as her particular coping mechanism. She lost everyone, so now she's desperate to keep them attached to her.
    Now look at the MW's lyrics: "Keep it locked up, keep it sealed tight". That's the dome, that's the codependence, that's Wammawink's strategy. And Wammawink is the character to oppose her (Think of the fragile things) and also to go into the Unknown of the portal, something directly paralleling Horse's drive for adventure that was a source of conflict between them at first.

Thankfully I didn't smoke weed before watching this and I very quickly realized that there would be darker twists that came up, but my older brother had decided to smoke when I showed him this show and had taken a few hits by the time that bit rolled around. My theory is that the Nowhere King was a centaur and him and Mystery Woman where friends, possibly she was his rider, and whatever happened between them is what caused the war.

    the whale episode struck hard. i mean i think the lyrics in her song are pretty clear .... but lets not talk about it. but also the, lets call it aftermath, of horses action. how the herd is suddenly hit by that big wave resulting of it and merguy saying "i thought you know shes gonna swallow your friend" and their "no" response and then the realization that all the warning signs were there (here literally signs) but nobody picked up on them. i feel a LOT of thought went into the whole episode. well, the whole show to be honest.

I think the mystery sorceress and the nowhere king were married and when he died she used evil magic to bring him back turning him into the nowhere king... As a second twist I think durpleton is their secret son which would explain his very human characteristics and abandonment issues.

    I also think that a lot of what we see is a metaphor for coping with trauma.
    When you live in Survival Mode in a traumatic situation, it becomes "The Norm", and you're more comfortable with constant trauma and danger than you are with "not dangerous"-- because it's unfamiliar to you, plus the whole "waiting for the other shoe to drop" effect. But Horse goes someplace where she has love, support, and is forced to come to terms with how her "survival" mechanisms aren't good for the long term.
    They show her that reckless behavior hurts more than just her, that it's okay to cry when she's frustrated, that she can be kind to others without having that taken advantage of. There's a softer part of her that slowly emerges, especially the more she embraces being anything other than War Horse; something that comes out in full when she finishes "Who Is She?" because she's finally acknowledging ALL of herself and doing some much-needed introspection.
    But, when you're used to depression, when you're used to "survival mode", getting treatment and healing means changing, and change is *terrifying*. Who are you without your depression, without your survival/coping skills? Are you a different person? Will you remember what was in your life before? What if changing and being more vulnerable leads to a bigger disaster? It's why people have relapses in therapy and treatment.
    But in the end, Horse finds a different kind of strength, and not only does her relationship with Rider endure DESPITE the changes ("Despite the changes, I would know you anywhere / The voice, the face, the hair might all be different / But you're still you, and all I wanna do, is hold you close again") but she's able to better communicate with her, and has new power. Knowing that despite changing so much, Horse was still Horse, she was able to finally commit to this metaphor for trauma treatment.
    I mean I'm just speculating, but I feel like that's all one component in all of this, along the trans narrative and "found family" tropes.

    I think the writers were trying to make horse know of the Nowhere king well before her transportation to centaurworld that's why she knows about his lullabye, but they scrapped it and now we have a random sentence of horse 'knowing' his theme. Honestly it would have made for an interesting scene where in the human world villagers escaping the minotaurs sing that lullabye as a reminder that the nowhere king still exists and there is no surrendering or running away as the nowhere king will burn the entire world in war

    Theory regarding the villain and the woman with wild hair:
    When attempting to seal the doors and take the wand, she sung a song about love and how it can be both wonderful and horrible. How it can make people do horrible things.
    The Nowhere King clearly knew who she was and was delighted to see her. She couldn't bring herself to kill him.
    In the final scenes of the last episode of the 1st season we see the Nowhere King's slimey mass making its way to a castle in the human realm to sit on a throne. Thr camera pans up and there's a portrait of a woman resembling the woman in the show. And above that there is a massive series of carvings in the wall of centaurs and humans coming together, with a centaur man and human woman holding hands.
    The two are husband and wife, and something horrible happened to make him become what he is now. And she still loves him, and sure she could talk about sealing him and keeping everyone safe that way but she couldn't bring herself to kill him. She'd rather keep both worlds separated with him sealed away than kill him because she still loves him too much to do it.

I think they had a sort of Romeo and Juliet situation and eventually for some reason The Nowhere King wanted to destroy both worlds and became the monster he is betraying Mystery Woman (hence her trauma).

    MORE CENTAURWORLD CONTENT!!! I need more theories, side character analysis, geeking out about little details! Maybe episode by episode? Love this video and this show so much.

    I loved watching you react to this! I just finished binging it myself and you caught some things I missed, so it was fantastic! Whose jacket it was, the rider/horse dynamic with the NK and the magic lady; it was so much fun watching this with you!

    My theory is that the nowhere king was a centaur. He was friends with the mysterious woman, maybe lovers, but then something terrible happened. Maybe they were looking into some sort of powerful magic that would help defeat the minotaurs, but he became corrupted by it, becoming a greater threat. So she had to trap him in between dimensions.
