He is a great man. He came to visit in 2004. He was my idol and was very strange when I had to race him at the 1996 Olympics.

It was strange to sit next to your rowing idol/god in 1996. Thomas was the unbeatable. I had to keep my composure and not think about who I am sitting at the line with. After all he was two time Olympic gold medalist, the ironman in person.

Great video of best rower ever in my humble opinion...listen to his life story. i am certain he could have match or exceed Ivanov and Karpinnen achievements..his style is similar to Iavnoc..check it

True, but it is understandable that he laments it given how many benefits he would have gained as an elite athlete and double olympic gold medalist!

Great athlete, sad about his father, but hard to sympathise too much with a guy who laments something that brought misery to millions.

Xeno, what do you mean by very strange ?

Strange, when you have to race your "invincible" idol. Luckily Porter beat Lange in 1993, so we knew he was beatable....

If he lamented the fall of the third reich, if his father had been in the SS rather than the stasi, would we sympathise with him?

      Nice false equivalence there.

@@k.k.j.478 not really a false equivalence. Maybe I was harsh - we can't blame the man for loving his father - but he stasi were a pretty evil bunch.

@@DHTCF Did they kill millions, and did they plan to kill millions more?

@@k.k.j.478 they imprisoned millions. If the best you can say of the stasi is that they weren't as bad as the SS, that isn't really very much, is it?
