Absolutely hedious what the
" designer" did to that apartment. The furnishings are cold and univiting, to say the least .
Hideous.
Yes, it's funny that one would pay all the money to be there and spend even more trying to make the space into something it's not ...
Agreed. Americans don't appreciate history like the Europeans do. It's ashame, really.
This is whaaayyyy too modern for me. Cold. Not inviting to me. Some rooms were nice, though. I mean, I didn't hate it necessarily. I just prefer closest to the way it was back in time. When houses had character. They were built for function, lots of storage, large fireplaces, to last far into the future. Strong bones.
This apartment would be too modern and plain for me 🤷
No character.
I'm glad I am not the only one who feels this way ! 🙂
Those of us who have been to Europe.
Those of us who treasure the past.
It's the principal of the thing.
AGREE!
The layout is great but I really dislike much of the modern furnishings and the wall to wall carpet in architecture like this. It looks more like a Miami Beach condo than a place at the Dakota. I was salivating thinking about how I’d redo it. It needs at the very least a gorgeous wood floor and oriental rugs, and the modern kitchen has got to go.
That carpet is nearly as icky as the kitchen cabinets. But once upon a time, both were the thing. But they ain't a thing anymore. It amazed me that both were still there.
That kitchen looks like something from IKEA...It's SO out of place in an apartment of that age and grandeur!
Agreed, kitchen has to be gutted. It’s disgusting. The whole place needs a major overhaul & renovation to restore the wood features. The whole unit brought back together would be amazing. 😊
Exactly what I thought. Hardwood floors, oriental rugs, one hump camel back sofa brocade or velvet upholstery with matching wing chairs, jewel-like colors, a grand piano, fireplace with oak surround and arts and crafts tiles, somewhere there should be a gilt ornate mirrors or two, floor vases holding rushes or other ornamental grass, and maybe even a small water garden. I'd love it!
@@VintageFLA same! Not at all what I thought!
Grand momma and pappa lived there in 1930 to 1979 then my Aunt Bunny took over. It was very lovely place and grand.
I really don't like the modern style. I prefer the original.
The bad taste is scandalous in a building of such splendor
What a major disappointment. These were so beautiful in the past, but this modern remodel totally ruined it-- for me anyway. I saw Lauren Bacall's apt after she passed away and that was absolutely perfect, just what you would expect in such a grand old building.
The modernized living and dining room is a horror! So sad that they did such a tacky remodel.
Money can’t buy taste.
It's missing all the wood trim
Looks like someone ripped out all that beautiful mahogany woodwork.
I agree. It doesn't suit the period of the apartment at all.
@@lorianderson-musgrave3609on the plus side it’s a fairly blank canvas . All you need to do is rip the carpet up, and put some decent furniture, and maybe some colour in it . Thankfully it still has all the features that many old buildings have been stripped of. Edit: I’ve just seen the kitchen . That needs gutting lol
I can hear the theme music from Rosemary's Baby as the camera circles the Dakota.
Yes. I kept waiting for them to show a linen closet that secretly connects to the witches' apartment next-door.
@@mthivier 🤣🤣🤣🤣
La la la laaaaah la la la la la la la LAH laaaaa....
I had the great opportunity to attend a dinner party in the Dakota in 1984. There was a CPW address on the invitation but had no idea I was going to the Dakota and how memorable the evening would be.
Another stunningly drab interior underscoring that the most exceptional things about "The Dakota" remains its location, façade and history. (Quick! Perform a seance and resurrect Nureyev for this unit's decor.)
Gorgeous apartment! Lackluster décor, though. All the money in the world can't buy taste
Great apartment, but it needs to be completely updated. Wood floors are under those carpets and are probably pretty spectacular.
That's what I was thinking.
My parents built their own home in San Diego i the late 1940's and it had beautiful hardwood floors. My mom hated the upkeep and was delighted to get wall to wall carpeting.
She also had lovely mahogany dining room furniture and monogamy trimmed upholstered wind back chairs in the living room.
I was only about 6 when she changed it all to "Early American".
I hated it!
Sorry for the monogamy!
Mahogany, of course.
They gave that place a housterectomy.
Well said!
I like the original apartment style in Rosemary's Baby.
The interiors of the apartment from the movie was actually filmed in Los Angeles. The Dakota was only used to film the exterior
I am unsure why I’m so obsessed with this building. I absolutely love seeing the interiors even with the changes it still feels as though we are stepping back in time.
Thank you for another terrific video always so informative
No matter how many times you say it, this apartment is neither aesthetically pleasing nor functional.
Well, I'm always trying to be nice. :)
Agreed. Too modern. No character.
Well, I love it!

Gorgeous rooms and room sizes. However, the modern furnishings looked out of place for this elegant apartment.
The bedrooms and the library were beautuful. Every other room too moderm. The kitchen, while functional was somewhat clinical. And yes,I agreed with you when you said too many mirrors in the dressing room.
What a fabulous apartment. Thank you. When I watched Rosemary's Baby for the first time I wondered how a struggling actor could afford to live in such an apartment.
Because he had made a deal with the devil so his wife could bear the devils offspring, and they made sure he got the staring acting roll by making the other actor have an accident and break his leg. those old busy body neighbors were working with Satan and the husband against his wife for her to birth the devils baby.
@@robingendron821 wait, so did the husband make the deal before they moved in to the building? It’s been a while since I’ve seen it . I can’t remember how he came to be friendly with the old couple to make the deal in the first place
@@littlemy1773 no deal with the devil was made before they moved in. So yes, how could they afford to live there unless Rosemary had a wealthy family that made sure their daughter was taken care of. They met the neighbors after they moved in.
Tacky remodel
Ok, I am never going to be able to afford an apartment in the Dakota, but this one just gives me the sads. They were there for 50 years, so it stands to reason everything would be 1970's 'modern' but the colors and finishes are so devoid of any warmth. Why buy an apartment with so much glorious wood only to hide it? sigh...
Wow 50 years!
If I was that wealthy, I would have pushed to get into that apartment. What a rare opportunity just to live in the Dakota.
That pink color in the bedroom overlooking Central park.
What remains of the historic integrity inside this apartment is beautiful. The modern changes are unfortunate. It is very sad to think there will probably be someone will come in and paint over everything gray including all that original carved woodwork.
Would be interesting to see images from the same period. Super curious all the changes it’s been through as people made it home. Thank you for the upload.
Fantastic layout; but if I was able to buy it, my budget would be swamped with redecorating most of the rooms and buying all new furniture and artwork.
I would love to have had that apartment they filmed Rosemary's Baby in. I loved that apartment, which is what got me interested in the film!🙏
It’s amazing to me that people can hold on to the Dakota’s apartments for so long and that units come up for sale so rarely considering the prices. Once you’re in, who wouldn’t want to stay, however! Love the architecture and views, but the way it is decorated is a huge let down. If I had enough money to buy it, I’m sure I would try to bring it back to splendor. ❤ It seems sad that the doorways are blocked off, but understandable with the costs. The monthly upkeep alone! As always, thanks for sharing,
I love it..
Beautiful and modern
I would love to have a bedroom with large windows with a view like that!
Me, too. :)
My friend actually lived in the Dakota- he was in his 20s . Pretty cool
I would so buy it!!!!!
If you do, remember I will bring the tea and scones. :)
@@StrangeHistoryX Ha! The next time a Fri the 13th falls in October, come on up and tea 🫖 will be served at 4! 😄
I love it ....all of it❤
Love it. Comfortable and easy to clean.
Haha
I was outside the Dakota in 1982 it’s like it was yesterday. It’s an American palace, rich in history❤
Just started the vid. Am I going to be disappointed? Beautiful building! Chrome 😒. OMG. WHO RUINED THIS!
If I was rolling in dough I would purchase it, but I would have to restore it to its original features. Just goes to show you that even if you have money it doesn't equate to good taste.
Gut it!! The decor description is a laugh!
Whoever was decorating this apartment over the years may have money but their taste sucks!
My dream to live there!!!❤❤❤
Great pics of the Building. Love the 70s,80s+ some late mid-century modern furniture and decor.
I don't like how the character has been destroyed.
Who saw Rosemarys’ Baby? This apt is Mia Farrows in the movie.
@@gregpendrey6711 that’s what I thought, too. The kitchen, second bedroom and library room really sparked my memories.
@@gregpendrey6711 several people mentioned Rosemary's Baby. Now I'm gonna have to get the movie and see for my self.
The window air conditioners are not that effective to cool down an apartment that size with high ceilings. There are so many hidden problems (electrical, plumbing and fireplace chimneys). The modern furniture is so out of place with the original architectural elements. Many tour buses stop on W. 72 St. to see the Dakota and the Imagine - Strawberry Fields memorial especially on the weekends with hoards of tourists making the area congested. The apartments on the lower floors (floors 2-4) of the building which face CPW offer a great view of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
Another great tour! Have you watched any of the videos posted by the designer Garrow Kedigian? He would know exactly how to really turn this jewel of a residence into a masterpiece. The owner who decorated with the soft contemporary style shown did a respectful job, so all this place needs is the right adjustments to bring back its sense of history and vintage beauty. Yes, I would consider this -- and I'm normally the kind of guy who fantasizes about living in a UES building designed by Rosario Candela, LOL! -- with that caveat. Thanks again!
this third floor apartment i very much do not like. The foyer entrance cut on a diagonal, it just warns you that this is going to be a mess and it really is. But the park views from the bedroom windows are a plus. feels like the enfilade of the bedrooms should be turned into the living room ...
BTW. Is there any information about the yellow paint in the library? ❤
What would you like to know?
The only thing I don't like is the carpeting throughout. It makes the unit look dated.
I have read that sometimes when people strip out all the original architectural interior elements of a Dakota apartment that the pieces are stored in the basement. I hope that's true.
@ 5:00 Realtor-Speak Translation : "The combination of sleek furniture, minimalist and abstract artwork, and thoughtful decorative touches result in a harmonious and stylish environment perfect for dining and entertaining." = Looks like a warehouse.
Who redid this apartment? Carpeting? Why would they remodel it to look like this? The original was classic.
Was it owned and used for a corporate short-term apartment? It was incredibly high end but has kitchens and furnishings that say, "We really don't care, do you?"
If you look at the floorplan you'll see a servants entrance to the apartment that enters into the kitchen.
In the kitchen there is the door going into the servant's quarters.
And another door going into the dining room.
It appears that it is the staff only that uses the kitchen and the owners probably never enter.
The kitchen is designed for efficiency.
I've seen this type of setup many times in old homes and apartments. People are stunned that beautiful old homes have such a plain kitchen and that is why.
The staff stays either in their room or working in the kitchen creating three meals per day and the occasional dinner party rich people like to host.
$8mil to not have central a/c is wild to me, but I guess people are buying for the historical aspect.
@@joanneexume3655 Seriously, it's needs central heating and air.
Very very seriously. I'd forego just about anything to have my beloved a/c at the ready. I can't figure this out at all.
Maybe for the 12 million you'd get the phone number of the best HVAC guy in the city, but for 8 million, you should be grateful just to be there, come rain, or shine.
My exact thought.
@@joanneexume3655 and could you imagine paying over 12 K a month for HOA fees ?
@@c.l.9344 owners wouldn’t stay in NY in the summer, they had country houses.
The carpeting is vile! Who installs that anymore?
Makes me sick that someone would modernize it and paint it white on white. It's high time the interiors of historic buildings are protected - and not just the outside.
Wish we could see how the budget works with that high of a monthly fee.
I did some simple math and to live in the Dakota with a 12k maintenance fee isn't so bad. The average mortgage payment is 7k for an 800k loan. Now, you must pay cash for the house to make it make sense.
The dining room with no skirting boards is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE!!
It's way too modern for the Dakota . I prefer the original.
Beautifully done.
Better than most.
The maintenance fee is pretty high, but what I find overwhelming are the adjectives.
So what is behind the non functioning door in the library? Another apartment? So much for privacy if so.
Magnificent place, but I’d restore it to close to how it may have been decorated in the 1880’s. I’d want modern conveniences, but would have them disguised or enclosed so as to look authentic. The fireplaces, those I’d keep functioning just as in the past for those damp cold winter nights. Of course, I will never own anything in The Dakota!
Probably have wood floors underneath the carpeting that could be resanded if necessary
U can remodel, redesign and revamp, but the negative energies will still be there.
I have a hard time seeing #32 in the "original" combined floor plan. And even the combined version doesn't seem quite right in its awkward layout. Are there earlier floor plans for this part of the building? I'd want to see the original, if possible, to get a better feel for it.
As with many others' comments, the interiors are ghastly, especially the old kitchen and its cabinets & layout.
Under-impressed. The master bedroom was the best room but all I could think about would be the beeping taxi horns and sirens.
i wonder can any of the fire places be used
It boggles my mind why anyone would paint over that magnificent wood-work (mantles / mouldings). True, it may be fashionable - for the moment - but it seems to negate the natural beauty of this wood.
But...each to their own...
Chase lounge? Is that anything like a chaise longue?
Please something with original everything
LOVE this shit!
Has anyone ever taken you up on your tea and scones offer? 😃
Yes, they have. And I keep my word and bring the tea and scones.
@@StrangeHistoryX You do such a great job with your videos. Very interesting!
They ruined the home. What was once magnificent, they turned into a boring cold, just like every one else's residence. I can only imagine the woodwork! I always dreamed I would live here 1 day. Growing up in NYC, that’s the place to be:)
Don't care for the carpeting, decor or furnishings. Lovely fireplaces and views though.
This is mid-century modern, not contemporary modern. It looks dated…..they’ve somehow taken the beauty and grandeur of the Dakota and made it look unremarkable in every way.
Money but no taste!
That apartment is horrible. I sure wouldn’t wanna live in it the way it is currently. And boy oh boy, it is not worth the price. Not even close.
@@paulh1745 But the history is so cool.
People that ruin the interiors of this building just do not appreciate the hard work that the craftspeople did. even if I had the $$ I'd have to pass on this apartment...or spend tons of cash to change it back to it's original!
Too right. Such people are Visigoths. I can't believe the Board allows it.
Fot such a big apartment the staff room seems a bit stingy. Granted I don't know if it's for sleep-in or having a break, but even so.
What a shame and disappointment that the beauty of the original woodwork in the library was not maintained in the rest of the apartment, leaving the overall space looking discombobulated.
I gotta assume Ilon Specht’s apartment will be on the market relatively soon.
Did she live next door? If so, then she must have owned both apartments since her price tag was $19.5 million.
@@StrangeHistoryX no, Ilon’s apartment is on the north west corner. Original layout. I’ve been there a couple of times. She passed a few months ago.
Painting the wood white was ignorant. Modernizing it is too. Keep the damn history intact. Otherwise why even live there ?
Bedroom faces CPW🫶
Whoever was in charge of redesign fell flat on their face. It feels like the worldly-earthly-wooden touch charm was stripped away leaving the entire unit cold and void of spirit. What a shame.
Is beautiful but has a hotel feel.
The carpet is hideous! Could be a wonderful apartment with the right taste.
Sorry -- I know the narrator wants to be positive, but his words do not match the reality of what is there in the living, dining rooms, and the other spaces that have been stripped of all Dakota character. The rooms that retain their original character make the stripped rooms all the more painful to see. But thanks for showing the original floor plans -- very informative -- and the servants' bell box. I would have liked to see the staff room and service elevator and stairs.
Monthly maintenance fee, more than 12 grand..
What are you paying for???????
Well, there is a doorman who opens the cab doors, and an office that will sign for packages. Is that worth it? Hmmm. Okay, there is more. But still .... yeah ... that's a lot of bread.
It’s a beauty but the entry seems underwhelming compared to other lower priced units.
I agree.
Living areas in the back and bedrooms with park views? Not so well planned…
$12,000 per month maintenance fee?
Does The Dakota have central air??
No.
The designer did an awful job. Such a gorgeous historic space and this is what they came up with? The kitchen is hideous.
Monthly maintenance of 12k? Say what now? 😵💫
I have just found out recently that Yoko Ono and John Lennon were married for only 10 years 😮 - in his song Imagine he was talking sbout everybody sharing everything… he was such a douche bag… yeah.. he was probably like ‘ you share your stuff, I will keep my Dakota apartment, English Manors, my Rolls Royce painted exclusively for me, hundreds of investments and socked away money that my greedy wife manages, because I have no idea how these things work. But yeah, imagine and share all your stuff, you loosers 🙄
How are those ridiculous air conditioners allowed in those beautiful windows?😢
I should add , there were mice .... the problem with old apartments in NYC
I love the layout, but the furniture is to minimal and modern for the architecture. It deserves antique furniture and Persian rugs and velvet and leather sofas and chairs.
I love to watch your productions they are very opulant and informative.
