Volcanic areas have great soil for growing. Historically, it was very much preferred for agricultural sites. Today we know why. Volcanic soil is rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and trace elements like iron and magnesium.
23:58 Jon explaining how he's going to get a mine since he can't build one while clicking on the Industry tab which lists Mine as a buildable structure. Never change, Jon.
Just got to this point and was wondering just how long it's going to be and how many resources he will sacrifice before he realizes he had it all along.
And again at 29min he has the industry tab open whilst working out what makes coal and still doesn't see 'Mine'. At 35min he even mouse overs the icon! Turns out it takes 11 video mins for Jon to realise, probably 20-30 mins in game time ;)
Jon needs a mine. Jon does not see the "Build Mine"-option under industry. Jon builds trading post, hoping to buy the ability to make mines. This game seems too involved for me to play, but I love watching Jon playing it.
@@charlesfranks1902 Not really since you can always pause to read everything and make your plans. I agree with his assessment that even though there’s a lot going on it becomes second nature pretty quick.
@@charlesfranks1902 That panic was my experience with the game as well, and the feeling of too much "Time Pressure" was the reason I ultimately returned the game after playing the tutorial. Much too stress-inducing for my tastes.
My game of the year 2023. I played this a lot back in January and your video is the push I needed to checkout the full release. The atmosphere the game has is stunning imo.
Jon, protip: don't rush picking your blueprints for buildings. Yes, that herbalist camp was nice for the mushrooms, but you scored an early set of fertile fields, and picking the farm during those initial three blueprint picks could've gotten you quick resources. Resources that could've been put toward the pack of crops mission, and then turned into flour for baking. Picks for things like blueprints and cornerstones don't go away. You can take your time and make choices based on the situation that develops.
This game has a "Give me a minute to look at stuff." or "Ask me again in five minutes." button? That's incredible! I am sick of games with popup choices that are so urgent they refuse to let you interact with anything until you've picked an option. Some games even have them prematurely close any other dialogs that are open, causing "pick A or B" menus to result in "pick neither", then be unable to go back, because of this.
@@torgranael the way blueprints and cornerstones work is that they queue up, you can accept them at anytime. (Except for something called “ethereal” which you have to pick right away or it disappears as an option.) So there’s quite a lot of planning you can do if you just queue up some choices until you’re more developed or have opened more glades to see which resources are nearby.
@@torgranael Yeah, no, this is a strategy game disguised as a colony-builder, so they definitely want you to plan things out and adapt. And once you get that stuff rolling, every storm cycle will be a race where those who make the most settlements within the cycle will score extra meta currency they can spend on upgrades.
If you click on a resource in the world, the pop up on the right shows what buildings harvest it. If you don’t have access to the building it will be sort of greyed out. I'm so glad Jon has played this now, this is one of my favourite city builders specifically because you don't just do the same thing repeatedly. There is no single "Best" strategy for every map, there is just best for THIS map which makes it WAY more interesting. It's like how if you learn what terrain generates what, you can hope to draw the right cards but sometimes you just get screwed. Like not getting any way to use fertile soil on the farm-heavy maps, that was a fun but very challenging time for me. I finished the tech tree really early in early access, and I have to go and give this more of my life. So much has changed and balanced that it plays so much more flexibly, and I adore it.
I've had my eye on this for a while now. I am 10 minutes into the video and it has shown me enough to convince me it's worth it. I do enjoy a good city builder.
I’m the exact opposite. I usually don’t like city builders unless there’s some kind of conflicts/limitations. That’s why smaller developers are great, creating variety so everyone can play games they like.
Im looking forward to this. Got interested in this game since it was in early access. Funny how each town feels diffrent. One time I focused on food production and struggled with getting bricks and fabric. some other time industry was ok but no constant food supply
I know you've done a live stream, but I'd love love LOVE to see you do a series on this. Maybe not do the game to completion, but maybe a run or two at least.
Ive got that game in the christmas sale and i just cant put it down ever since. Literally the only game i have been playing for the last 3 weeks. Well deserved 95%+ rating!

You actually didn't too badly for a new player Jon, perception failure at not realizing you had the mine the whole time aside. Some fairly common beginner mistakes (e.g. not focusing on complex food and building materials early etc.) but that's understandable. This is one of the best games of 2021 for me, and the only roguelike I actually like for being a roguelike. I think the roguelike elements actually fix a lot of common problems with the city builder genre, particularly because it means your cities are all quite different from each other and you have to adapt on the fly. I'd love to see more of this on the channel but I do recommend looking up some strategy guides first perhaps. It's a quite deep and complex game. *I love Hades but that's _despite_ the fact that it's a roguelike
I'm biased against this game because I downloaded the demo and steam promptly corrupted my entire C drive, forcing a complete wipe and reinstall of Windows.
its not really quality, its more speed and efficiency, a 3 star rating will make advanced resources faster and with less materials used rather than making quality stuff. Also... Mine... right there jon!
@@venividiarrevederci4461Personally I prefer 'Why is it always Dairylea?' by The Shirehorses. But that would make it an even more obscure and more British reference than Travis!

I don't know if it is the font or the colour or what but the text in this game is really unpleasant to read. Comparing it to the text on Civ 6 that I was watching earlier, which is a similar font size that I can read no problem. On my TV by the way not a tiny phone screen.
I wish people would stop describing this game as a city builder, I feel like that's just not correct. It's a colony roguelite worker placement/management game. There's no powerlines, no waterlines, no residential streets, it's simply not a city builder!
This looks like what would happen if X-Com Enemy Unknown was fantasy themed, and ran a demo version of Timberborn instead of Space Hulk for its regular missions. Definitely looks interesting, but I can see how most people would be confused if they read fantasy city builder and assumed it would be Cities Mythology. It's like being told you're getting an RPG, expecting a CRPG and being given a roguelike ARPG instead. That said, I want to see this as a series or even a livestream or two. If it's going to take 30 hours minimum to get a proper feel for it, that sounds like a potential eight hours of content.

A volcano-side city doesn't mean you're evil necessarily - it could just mean you're in Hawaii or Iceland.

Clearly Hawaii and Iceland are secretly evil, and Pompeii is obviously evil because the gods smote it.

Yeah so this 100% needs to turn into a series because this is extremely entertaining.
I’d say it would work better as a recurring livestream like Civ 6 is often used.
Jon: "How dangerous can a giant mushroom actually be?"
Me, remembering DS1: "Oh no..."
Jon's skimming of the lore has resulted in an entertainingly twisted picture of the Queen.
