the Brant Pittsburgh indoor track was suppossed to be a mile long originally, barely meeting the much older definition of a 'superspeedway' with the banking. The project was suprisingly far along, but 1 of the 2 brothers who owned/ran the company passed. I remembered this absurd project just the other day and looked more into it, turns out the company was based less than a mile away from my house. Last thing I expected is a plan like this to be coming out of the state of West Virginia lol
During the broadcast for one of the last races at Riverside (1986? '87? It should still be here on YT), there was a prerecorded segment centered around a proposed D-shaped oval to be built in Perris, CA, which is a few miles south on Interstate 215. There was a nice rendering shown and lots of optimism about shifting RIR's Cup date to it but, obviously, the project never came to be.
what kills me is they ALREADY have a nascar track near seattle- evergreen speedway hosts nascar sanctioned events every year, mostly modifieds. cup cars running on road courses, short tracks and dirt recently, i dont see why they couldnt run cup cars on the 5/8 out there.
Evergreen would need to add a lot of seats and infrastructure to host a Cup level event. That's a lot of money that I doubt they're willing to put into an unproven market with a track they don't even own.
@@BLyonsDesign unfortunately, youre probably right. even if seats weren't an issue, the roads around the speedway really arent designed for that much traffic. its a struggle just for the fair and the 4th of july races. tracks doing very well for a large fairgrounds track. probably not doing well as far as nascar tracks go. still, a boy can dream, right?
@@HolyCrap-cz6vs I want to argue with you because i want bigger races at my home track- but youre right. The track itself has been updated plenty since the 80s, walls, repaving, safety crew etc... as far as facilities, they added some bleachers.... otherwise it looks about the same as it did when you last saw it.
Another track that failed was Houston Superspeedway. Was going to be an egg-shaped track similar to Darlington, but the front stretch was a D-shape. I even recall a track mod for it for NR2003, though I have no idea if it still exists nowadays.
NASCAR is never going to be in NYC. The only realistic option I could see possibly happening, and only if something unexpected happens to Pocono or Dover, is a street course at the Meadowlands like the Miami F1 track. IndyCar did that in the late 80s to early 90s but it wasn't successful, but more recently they've hosted Supercross in the stadium with some success.
People in Chicago are still filing lawsuits against the City and NASCAR to cancel their race. NASCAR wants to become a sportscar series now anyways. But no one wants them.
Not too many people know about the proposed “New Orleans” track. In its initial inception it would’ve been located about an hour north of the city on much higher grounds. Local municipalities shut the idea down because of potential noise. My old boss was a realtor on the deal and actually was in meetings and got to ride in a helicopter over the property with NASCAR’s top brass at the time.
Hmmmm....the thought of a fully indoor NASCAR track. Maybe that's something that could be made of the Astrodome in Houston. Some refurbishing and a new ventilation system. It's a true landmark, and Houston has been trying decide what to do with it for years. Can't demolish....it's the first fully indoor stadium in history. It should be saved. It was always terrible for baseball. Football was better, but now they have NRG Stadium. So, retool "The Dome" for racing. It would make a great dirt track....once a year for NASCAR, and other dirt races the rest of the year.
Back during the 2000’s NASCAR boom my hometown wanted to build a Track , everyone was down but red tape got in the way and the state didn’t want to fix or expand 460 to meet the traffic.
The 4th of July street race is a pretty cool thing but what if it was roving, a different city every year, city’s that don’t have a track , denver/boston/niagara falls .
You are incredibly misinformed on the Staten Island racetrack. The lie about only union workers had nothing to do with it. The people on Staten Island didn't want the track because there weren't race fans. And they didn't want the traffic and chaos it would have caused trying to get fans to the track over a bridge that always has traffic jams on it. Not to mention trying to get all the haulers to the Island would have been a nightmare for regular travelers. Staten Island was a France ego dream. He wanted to be in New York City, he wanted the skyline. They even proposed a great spot up in Middletown NY for the track and he stuck his nose up at it. There was never going to be a track in or near New York City. And now since running NASCAR into the ground they'll never afford to expand again.
You can still see the scar on Google Maps of the proposed 1.5 mile track near Branson, MO. That's about as close as you can get to having a racetrack with nothing to show for it.
i always wondered why NASCAR never tried New Orleans, near a reasonably large market, fans can make a full weekend of it and hell you make it a potential championship 4 venue (sponsors and owners would love it)
why NASCAR even tries to put tracks in where their sport is NOT considered a sport is beyond me... they close great tracks like Nazereth and North Wilksboro where their brand is like football in Texas to move to places where people don't even see them as a valid sport is beyond me.
Would like a video on the southern Missouri race track(Branson/Hollister). The air port was built specifically for the track. Now no flights in or out. It was going to be private owned and built to Nascar specifications
Edit: never mind it was the first damn entry haha Just popping in before I watch the whole video that one track plan in Canada that Jeff Gordon endorsed was super fucking cool and I wish it could’ve happened
There was actually supposed to be an indoor track in Connecticut in the late 90s. Unsure if that exhaust technology existed then. It was supposed to be built along the coastline somewhere, I think more towards Rhode Island.
That was supposed to be in my old hometown at the site of a former greyhound racing track. It was supposed to be a 3/4-mile oval like Richmond, but with a dome. It got some local press, but no o e ever believed it would get done. It was a pie-in-the-sky pipe dream.
Tolland county CT resident here, and stafford speedway got dealt an extremely poor hand because it's too small (sandwiched between CT-30, CT-32, and CT-190), in a valley, because of being trapped it only has 15k seating, too small for most series to consider it (except arca)
@@platypinetwork Stafford is one of the more modern short tracks in American though. The SRX series proved it can hold big time racing. But I cannot imagine the top NASCAR series coming here. Traffic would be awful and hotels/lodging would be 20 min away plus. However, NASCAR is willing to try things with the Trucks (like Lime Rock) so, its possible.
@MikeKalasnik i mean hey at least there's a truck stop close by on 84 in Willington. Lodging would definitely be a stretch, I'd say CT-30 in Vernon would have a lot of it, as it has several hotels towards the Manchester city limits. Or honestly the drive to Springfield MA is concerning
Living in Kansas right next to Joplin Mo.... we have always heard Nascar wanted to build a track in Branson Mo. I doubt it ever happens. But then again who knows with the bass pro owner.
There was a plan to build a Darlington-like track near Charleston in the 1960s, but they only built the infield short track [Ona]. There's an nr2003 track called Nightstalker that is nearly identical in length, shape, and banking

Can’t imagine how much trouble they’d have with the track surface, given how humid it is there.
A dirt track there tho

I’m surprised no one for NR 2003 has tried to make the Canadian motor Speedway track
As a Jeff Gordon fan, learning that he designed a racetrack only to have it be cancelled is very disappointing
Why they cancelled that track?
2:58 Just wanted to add that there was an ASA event held inside the Pontiac Silverdome and a race inside the Astrodome.
Had more then 1 there! I think there was 3-5 races

With Nascar's poor attendance rates, I wouldn't even THINK of building a new track for them.
