I've grown to love Zangief as a player over the last decade. One of my favorite incarnations is the Z-Man in Capcom vs SNK 2. The N-Groove dodge maneuver is Zangief's best friend, since pretty much any heavy attack or well-timed fireball dodge = instant Spinning Piledriver or even Super Piledriver! His Flying Powerbomb is great, too.
Beautiful spinners at 1:05, 2:10, 2:53, 5:35! Great comeback against Cammy, she is a good counter to Zangief. Man, that spinner at 5:06 looked like it was from 5 inches away! Loved how he used the running grab against Dhalsim, which is an important weapon! Another great thing I saw was Pony's mixing it up, sometimes jump attack and just grab, other times 1 tap, 2 taps, etc. This is also very important for Zangief players to use! Also, some of those spinners against Balrog were ridiculous!
With this performance Pony qualified for the quarters finals of X-mania. He later had to fight Otochun (Best Chun-Li player in Japan) and lost. You can see that match in my video similarly named "ChunLi Owning (Taikou 2002)"
Damn man, the first round of the second Dhalsim fight was amazing. With all of those yoga fires and far reaching limbs, he still managed to come out on top.
SPD has a 1 (60 frames in 1 second) frame start-up. SPD has v.good range (distance Gief can grab you from) ST system allows Gief to put characters in block stun (No. of frames your held in block position before they can move) and then SPD before they can jump away. Charge characters (No. of frames needed before the special move can be executed) are F@*ked if they get floored and their anti-air special isnt ready. Pony is one of the best Gief players in the world, knows all the match-ups.
If you're wondering about input, only a 270 is necessary (numpad directions would be 6321478) so if you press the buttons just as your stick reaches the top you'll do it before you're in the air.
In Japan the boxer was based on Mike Tyson and given a similar name (M.Bison). When SF2 was released in Europe/USA, Capcom decided to change the names to avoid any copyright infringement. In Europe /USA the boxer = Balrog, Claw = Vega and Dictator = M.Bison.
The Ken player in the second match was a real trooper. The match after that one with Cammy got close at the end, but they got nervous and made a fatal error in the end.
Because the Spinning Pile Driver is still very hard to pull off while you're being attacked. It takes great skill to do it as accurately as Pony does here (such as while walking forward and defending against a possible fireball/sweep/Shoryuken). And Zangief's striking range is short in this game. He's ranked higher in the Alpha/Zero series.
scratch that last part, if you hold start and select the new challengers, you get the old characters. But still, vega's wall dive is programed wrong, o. sagat's tiger shots have more recovery on them, ken sim and N. sagat can reversal super, and etc. Its not ST by any standard, but it's still fun.
@blackfreakm (Final atomic buster)= make a circle with the joystick and press any punch. the shortcut to executing this move is to make only 3 quarters (540 degrees) of the motion
People who play mid/high tier characters don't win with skill? Thats news to me! But Pony rocks and this was a fantastic display on his part. I love his matches.
That would be insane. considering how Zangief is low-tier in ST and Pony beast so hard with him. Zangief is, at this point considered the second best character in SFIV. So Pony would be near unstoppable
@blackfreakm SPD (Spinning pile driver)= make a circle with the joystick and press any punch. the shortcut to executing this move is to make only 3 quarters (270 degrees) of the motion
Tick Throws, M-Kick pokes, reversal baiting, etc. very nice. But in HD Remix if you SPD you land far from each other, and you can't get back in time to safejump...
More like Gief's hardest matchup period. E Honda is also a pain, in my experience. But it's like every Sim move is made to fight a Gief. He can even teleport from the corner..
Well...if you must know...Balrog is suppose to be M. Bison because in the Japanese version of older Street Fighters, he is technially suppose to be a clone Mike Tyson. But since that name was already taken, it was changed in the States due to copyrights, not to mention it would confuse people. Because of this, Vega was renamed Bison and the spanish ninja is renamed Vega in the U.S. Their original names in every Japanese arcade will always be Bison (Boxer), Vega (Dictator) and Balrog(Ninja).
M.Bison was Balrog's original name in the Japanese version. During the time of the games original release, Mike Tyson threatend to sue Capcom for using a likeness to his name and persona without his permission, so Capcom opted to change the names around and gave Balrog his name in the version released to the United States.
Yeah, but Pony is beating up known tourney players in that video. All his enemies know exactly what they're doing and it's incredible that he's reading right through it. I mean, I'm a Zangief player too, but the way Pony plays is just godly. Zangief is so slow on his feet and while jumping, you literally have to be perfect to beat really good opponents.
Pony's Zangief is a legend because we haven't seen you dominate the rankings in the Japanese tournaments like he has. That is the only reason. We can't really take your word for it, unless you have videos and a name that you got to tournaments with. To not know pony is very odd, to say the least.
Since you obviously can't debate this point without turning it personal, I'll simply say you're right about me not understanding zoning or what you mean by that and kudos to the Zanfief player for beating such a hard character twice in the same video.
... he's buffering in the SPD while he does other actions, such as the kicks. SPD is actually extremely easy to pull off once you practice it a bit and in this version of SF, it has a bit of range.
I think that's for the best. If he could safejump right after, it'd be too cheap. I say that as a casual Gief main. He's still dominates everything that comes near him.
hmmm, i just noticed there that the bridge is really thin in the center...wonder whats stopping it from breaking into a million bits when gief piledrives someone >_>
A tier list is someones opinion of how good each character is in comparison with all the other characters of a particular game. Commonly once all characters are in order from best to worst, people then express where the boundaries are in terms of a character being classed as Good (top), Average (Mid) or Bad (Low). In ST many people feel Zangief is Low-tier
the combo, after jumping middle kick n low middle kick n SPD that is though knowing what's next but can't do anything its grapple movement has some kinda range
maybe thats because i don't post vids on youtube and don't have access to live. so let me get this right......in order to be good at something, you have to have a name. by all means carry on brother, your attemps to get me angry are working as a form of coffe as i finish drawing this pic, you're entertaining me and i thank you for that.
He uses Zangief's "suck in" range of his spinning pile driver. I used to use it when SF2 first came out but you heard cries of cheapness. Good to see his newer moves made him disgusting. He was toned down after, but it's a cool video.
@Ermac211 it's like with alot of things in life, some1 can tell u the knowledge and know how, but you'll have to do it yourself. It's a fast movement and you gotta time the last degrees with pressing the button
Great Zangief, a good player pianos the specials... (pressing all 3 buttons to get better chance at timing)... he messes up sometimes and instead of SPD he just lariats... ownage
You don´t need to do a full 360 motion to execute "360" Moves. You only need a 270 degree motion. For example F,DF,D,DB,B,UB,U+Punch will do a spinning piledriver. For the double "360" he does a double 270 Motion like U,UB,B,DB,D,DF,F,DF,D,DB,B,UB,U+Punch. That way he can buffer the first 270 into an attack walk a step and then do the 2nd 270 for the super special. No "360 button".
Why was your comment thumbsed down? It's the fucking truth people. Zangief player (Pony) is using the NEAR worst character in the game. He is just the best Zangief player in the world, so that is why he is so dominant.
HAHA 6:12 Gief: Got your balls. Deejay: No, not my balls Gief: Crush your balls, hey hey hey, damn hand getting sore...almost...getting there. Deejay: (biting teeth) K.O!, Gief: ahh..there we go. Deejay: Orgasm
Melee is a very difficult game to play. But the execution for wave-dashing/l-canceling are not that hard. I also play melee... (sf is my favorite) i believe that smash is more about abusing the properties that make your character broken while in SF it's more about knowledge about your own and your matchup against your opponent. Not to mention execution in ST is unreasonably difficult. Executing many of the moves/combos/reversals are much more difficult than anything you can imagine in melee.
Im most impressed when i see him do "impossible" matches with that counter character bs. Like Gief vs honda, guile, sim, or chun. I hate when people cry counter character crap, and top tier bs. When it comes down to the basics, Skill > Tier. The only exception is Mvc2.
I didn't mean to mark this post as spam, but anyway, onto the question... You do a 360-degree spin on the d-pad and then a punch button. I believe it's Fierce punch.
Dude I did a 5 hit combo too but that doesn't mean shit. It matters about skill man some people don't need combos. It's all about skill and patience. That's where people fail all the time to realize. Besides HD remix it is much easier to do moves. Example is the throw itself is no longer 360 motion.
Pony's Zangief is a real work of art. So close to absolute PERFECTION... I love it!! I hope we seem him playing SF4 with Zangief again!
Beautiful spinners at 1:05, 2:10, 2:53, 5:35! Great comeback against Cammy, she is a good counter to Zangief. Man, that spinner at 5:06 looked like it was from 5 inches away! Also, some of those spinners against Balrog were ridiculous!
Gotta love the walk up SPDs. You have to see an opening and walk just into the distance then a full SPD input before they can react.
After playing Gief for a while you really recognize and appreciate the stuff he's doing!
Pony is a beast. I always get hyped watching him play.
Seeing Pony destroy that Dhalsim was cathartic.
With this performance Pony qualified for the quarters finals of X-mania. He later had to fight Otochun (Best Chun-Li player in Japan) and lost. You can see that match in my video similarly named "ChunLi Owning (Taikou 2002)"
I was just thinking I'd love to see him go up against Otochun!
Damn man, the first round of the second Dhalsim fight was amazing. With all of those yoga fires and far reaching limbs, he still managed to come out on top.
OMG, Ive never seen Zangief take out so many top/mid tier characters. his victims inc Dhalsim, Balrog, Guile etc
SPD has a 1 (60 frames in 1 second) frame start-up.

pony is god player.
Trust me, they're top players. Pony's great play made them look that way
If you're wondering about input, only a 270 is necessary (numpad directions would be 6321478) so if you press the buttons just as your stick reaches the top you'll do it before you're in the air.
I love that turn around at 4:20. Classic :)
Crazy matches. Pony is an amazing player in all aspects of ST.
Dude in the broadscale of life, im afraid you fall into the nerd catergory just by being here.

Truer words were never spoken. tHawks command throw+super is a close second
lol 6:20-6:58 pure justice. very nice play, it would be really nice to see Zief v. Sagat
Not to mention how much easier it is to do the same in HD remix.
Sheesh, what a master.
In the right hands, yes. Very much so. Pony's a PERFECT example of this. Same goes for T.Hawk (Toutanki is a good example).
The KO at 6:58 was awesome.
Well played.
Bet the Takedaru (or whatever) was like wtf lol
I never get tired of seeing this guy land so many Screwdrivers
Because the Spinning Pile Driver is still very hard to pull off while you're being attacked. It takes great skill to do it as accurately as Pony does here (such as while walking forward and defending against a possible fireball/sweep/Shoryuken). And Zangief's striking range is short in this game. He's ranked higher in the Alpha/Zero series.
Good lord, Dhalsim got manhandled.
They named the boxer Bison because of its similarity to (Mike)Tyson.
Balrog-Bison(Boxer)
Vega-Balrog(Claw)
Bison-Vega(Dictator)
scratch that last part, if you hold start and select the new challengers, you get the old characters.
That sound after the Super Piledriver is their necks breaking.
a 'gief this aggressive is truly a thing of terror
People who play mid/high tier characters don't win with skill? Thats news to me!
But Pony rocks and this was a fantastic display on his part. I love his matches.

I expect so. It's Super SF2, came out on the 16-bit consoles. (I think Super Turbo came out on Neo Geo, if you really want to push the boat out)
The 360 Pile Driver: Best move EVER in any fighting game in history.
that round 3 perfect on ken was sick. 9:15
Yeah, but Pony is beating up known tourney players in that video. All his enemies know exactly what they're doing and it's incredible that he's reading right through it. Proves that skills conquer over all
hi-score girl anyone?
Megamanx-8 is the modern Gief player that most closely resembles this style of gameplay
I'm always rooting for Gief players. This is a sweet vid.
I dunno, remember Bison in the first version of SFII?
He used to grab ya when punches coulnt hit him!... or it is just the way I remeber it.
starts charging back as soon as the sonic boom is thrown. And the player knows exactly how long he has to charge before the move can be executed
Either buffer it in while doing another action, or start at F, rotate to UB and press P as soon as you hit UB so you don't jump.
あっ見て!今まで無惨に散っていったザンギの魂が天に還ってゆく
このザンギかっこええ。10分間楽しませてもらいました。
hmmm, i just noticed there that the bridge is really thin in the center...wonder whats stopping it from breaking into a million bits when gief piledrives someone >_>

Zangief is actually scary like any other power characters like Hugo.
maybe thats because i don't post vids on youtube and don't have access to live.
so let me get this right......in order to be good at something, you have to have a name. by all means carry on brother, your attemps to get me angry are working as a form of coffe as i finish drawing this pic, you're entertaining me and i thank you for that.

This is the Japanese version which has the names right. It's in the English version of the game where they swaped the names of Bison, Vega and Balrog.
Zangief is now considered the best in SFIV in japan the next in line is sagat
@Ermac211 it's like with alot of things in life, some1 can tell u the knowledge and know how, but you'll have to do it yourself. It's a fast movement and you gotta time the last degrees with pressing the button
Wow that win at 6:57 is damn impressive. Guess its not over until its over lol. An it was also funny that low tier Cammy gave him the most problems.
Great Zangief, a good player pianos the specials... (pressing all 3 buttons to get better chance at timing)... he messes up sometimes and instead of SPD he just lariats... ownage
Man.. This Pony guy freaking rocks!
the perfect vs ken was just plain frightening.
but, gah! where's part two of this?
Erh well I guess I did forget SF4 and HD Remix. I know in SF4 he's high tier, but I have no idea about HD Remix.
a good 'Gief is truly a terrifying thing.
this has to be the best zangief player i've ever seen
You don´t need to do a full 360 motion to execute "360" Moves. You only need a 270 degree motion. For example F,DF,D,DB,B,UB,U+Punch will do a spinning piledriver. Yes but the consistent ultra tight tic SPD were awesome.
doing a reversal move that keeps you off the ground (shoryuken, or flashkick).
You should hear Balrog's number announcements when you hold down ppp or kkk (or both)
Lmao @ the Exchange at 5:01. That sim looked like he didn't have a clue.
Why was your comment thumbsed down? It's the fucking truth people. Zangief player (Pony) is using the NEAR worst character in the game. He is just the best Zangief player in the world, so that is why he is so dominant.
I love your description. It's how I feel. Use someone who requires some skill people.
dyam that last round with ken really was LOL friggin awesome this guy ....has he ever been beatnen?
if so with who?
How do you make the grapple attack when he jump with the enemie in the air and makes a 360° turning to the floor ?
(i play on snes)
Don't fuck with the Red Cyclone! Bolshoi pavieda!
HAHA 6:12
Gief: Got your balls.
Deejay: No, not my balls
Gief: Crush your balls, hey hey hey, damn hand getting sore...almost...getting there.
Deejay: (biting teeth)
K.O!, Gief: ahh..there we go.
Deejay: Orgasm
Everyone knows dude, never let Zangief corner you no matter who the fuck is playing. He gets you in a corner it's all over.
@PurexOvvnage
instead of doing back, forward+punch, you do back, forward, back+punch. you will charge the next boom right away
This guy is already doing tick throws before they were mainstream and popular...
8 year olds were tick throwing in sf2

I think 06:14 is the round finisher ever. Shun Goku Satsu has nothing on this; there's no competition at all
damn, that sim got dispatched so quick in that 2nd round
but respectable players like pony plays the character that he loves(and of cos win), and not the characters that he thinks that can yeild him wins
I meant Zangief in vs series like MvSF or MvC.
Spd in st has good range. If its done as a reversal then has even more range
go for the capcom classics collection 2. The anniversary edition has a few problems with the st characters. And their are no old characters.
whats the first bgm ?
Ty
I didn't mean to mark this post as spam, but anyway, onto the question...

"Oooh ahhh ooooh ahhh oooh ahhh"
this is the reason i started using zangief
