How to rig a CHUGGER SQUID for trolling | Best fishing lures

- In this Rigs, Jigs & Lures episode, I go over step-by-step how to rig a trolling squid, also known as a chugger squid. This is one of the most common and best fishing lures used throughout the world as an additive attractant for fresh bait that is trolling. Tried and true to it's original design, shape and form, whether it is used with or without fresh bait, this lure is the go-to lure if you want to catch more fish . Used for deep sea fishing, charter fishing and offshore fishing, this lure can't be beat. If you troll, you've more than likely seen this lure... So here's some advice and tips on how to rig it up and put it to use.

I feel like back in college with your videos. Keep them coming. Quick question, why the swivel in the hook, does it have a specific purpose?

The swivel between the hooks and the lure is for spacing so that the hooks trail just behind the end of the lure. This is where fish typically strike prey, at the tail, to disable it, then they swoop around for the kill... So the hooks trail at the tail, so you get the hook up on the first strike, and they stay away from your leader. Hope this helps. Thanks again for everything you do for the channel. I like this double hook setup for a chugger skirt..

The double hook set up decreases short strikes, fish usually hit prey at the tail to disable them, that's why that hook hangs out the very back of the lure. Hey Heath! I found another mustad O’shaughnessy hook version which i wasn’t sure if you knew of. It’s 34091-DT and appears identical except the eye is already opened, you just have close it so might save a step in your process. Since my shop is out of 3407 it was a great substitute.
Thanks a million for watching and sharing. Yes, those have existed for a long time. The important factor is the DT (Duratin) a non-stainless alloy that's slightly pliable so the eye can be opened and closed without snapping off. So, years ago, I owned a small bait shop, and was introduced to the hooks you are referencing by a sales rep for Mustad. Great videos Kieth love them all. Have a question. If only using the swivel as a spacer and don’t need it to work as a swivel. Can you use beads instead.?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes of course, you can use only beads as spacers, you'll just probably have to use 3 instead of one. This is just the rigging method i've used for a long time, but any modifications as to spacers, or hardware will get it done. Hope this helps. Heath, Thanks for all of the great videos. I do have a question. Do you ever have your knot fail due to the egg sinker resting on the knot and not on the hook? I ran into this a few years back. The hole of the egg sinkers that I bought was to small and ended up beating the top of my knot until it failed. The answer to the problem ended up being small rubber beads. One little bead and no damage to the knot. I even stopped using the lower swivel and just ran two or three beads to space my hooks. Our set ups here are more to our Alaskan salmon, but we troll a lot of hoochie skirts up here. The other use I found for these is to put a rubber bead on top of your swivel when running jigs, mooching rigs and the like. It will keep someone who is not paying attention from breaking one of your rod tip running the swivel up into it. I can also just reel the swivel up to the top eye when done and put them back into the rod holders. Ready for the next time or next lure. Thanks again for the videos. nc angler here, we have alot of kings mixed in and hoos with our dolphin, how would that 40 hold up you think ?cable or wire would swim as well?

Hi Keith had another question can this rig and other skirt squids rig be tied without using a swivel. In what applications or rigs would you need swivel and which can you just tie directly. I know I’m other videos you did mention you need swivel on the spoon because they are ment to spin. Thank you
Thanks for asking another great question. Yes, you can tie you're leader straight on to your main line without a swivel. Here's a link to an episode I made explaining how to do that:

It's a knot combination of a spider hitch loop on your main line and connecting your leader to the loop with a no-name knot.
Also, there is another way, called a blood knot, which is where you thread your 2 lines together. If you look in my playlists under "Knot Tying How To's" there's an episode titled "how to tie mono to mono" that's where I show the blood knot.
Personally, I prefer the first option of the spider hitch to no-name, it gives you more shock absorbency and hook setting retraction when the fish strikes.

Also, I might have misunderstood your question... If I did, the answer you are probably looking for, is yes, you can tie your hooks straight on to your leader, without a swivel and troll the just like that. You'll be just fine.
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thank you so much. I was concerned with line twist and in the past I would always have a swivel. But now I see many not using it and just tying leader straight to mainline and straight to hook.
How do u know when to change lb test of leader been making all my leaders for lures but everyone uses 150 lb but than I see some like this with 40 I know for Oahu and stuff like that obviously, I need wire or really heavy line where I live wahoo really are far out and same with tuna. I’m Northeast Florida so trying to find the perfect set up for just trolling for a really anything that is good eating sometimes we do get barracudas Bonita I did want to go for some kingfish, not sure if Cobia bite on trolling
Personally 150 is too heavy unless you're going for big tuna, marlin, or you're trolling a planer and don't to use wire. For pelagics like mahi, bonito, tuna, 40 is perfect. It will get chaffed up from the mahi teeth and you may need to trim it up, but you won't get cut off from these fish. 40 is good because of the stealth factor and your going around 8-10 mph, whereas 150 is a thicker line and not as stealthy unless you're going faster around 14 mph for tuna and marlin. No cobia do not hit trolled lures. If you're going for kings, barracudas & bonito, I suggest using about 12-16 inches of 40 lb test wire leader on a planer... Hope this makes sense and helps
Where can i buy the chugger skirt in bulk. Rather than 1 at a time for $13
So you take out the inner skirt to fit the egg.

The chuggers that I buy don't have any insert skirt, but if it does and the sinker isn't fitting, then you should consider removing it so the lure trolls in a streamline fashion. Hope this helps. Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes, if you're getting a mix of toothy critters in with the Mahi you can definitely rig it up with wire. Personally, I'd go with #4 - 40 lb test single strand coffee colored. I know it's thin, but it keeps the stealth factor alive, plus, I've caught large wahoo with it too. Kings won't bite through it. However, if you're weary of the thinner wire, then most certainly go with the heavier gauge, like 80 lb test. I'd stay away from multi-strand cable with these, won't troll right. Hope this helps.
