To give more context of Reinhardt giving his hammer to Balderich, basically that was the lesson he learned that day and that changed him forever. That he has to be the one to bear the shield, to protect his team, to give up his reckless ways of wanting to always be on the front lines. So him giving his hammer away basically was that moment where he put it into practice, he doesn't need the hammer because from that day on, he will be the shield.
This one is both sad and beautiful. Reinhart got a lesson he needed, but it cost a lot. People who don't tear up, or atleast get somewhat of a lump in their throat, while watching this are cold hearted. They did a damn good job with this one! The moment when Reinhardt gives his hammer to his superior is not much a passing of the torch. This recalls more the concept of the "last gift", where you know someone you love is about to die and you let him/her know your affection by giving them something precious. During medieval/ancient times, the act of giving someone your weapon (which would be like giving your car away nowadays), was one of the stronges symbols of friendship. A sword was really expensive, often it was a family heiloom. Giving it away, couldonly mean that you and the other person shared a bond that was as deep, important and true, that he was like one of your family. There is also the meaning of Reinhardt's role as a Tank (a type of charactet with great defense and vitality, often with an incredible stamina and strenght, which gives his best while defending other people rather than attacking foes), as he chooses to leave his passion for combat (the hammer) to embrace his true place in the world, as a bastion protecting other people (the barrier he uses at the end). So... Yeah, it is some kind of passing the torch, but the real meanings are way more deeper than we think.
As I always tell people. If you watch the Overwatch Cinematics and don't get emotional, you have no heart. I love your genuine response and I would love to see some more reactions from you guys!

Like always Blizzard did a very good job with this cinematic. All characters of Overwatch are interesting. It have some rumors recently about a Overwatch PvE.. Maybe your next Blizzard game ;)
Too bad all the hard work and dedication the cinematics and art team go through is completely overshadowed and resented by Blizzard selling their souls to Activision and killing all love and respect the blizzard community once had for them as a game developer
