  • My model train layout portrays the South African Railways as it used to be back in the mid 1960s to 1980s. The scene is based on the Karoo mainline between Cape Town and Johannesburg or Durban. My scenery focuses on the mainline between Beaufort-Wes and De Aar (two major Karoo depots at the time)

Baie Dankie Willie. Pragtige herinneringe. Baie Baie Dankie en Mooi bly Meneer.

I just love it. It was the Lima HO SAR SAS trains that got me interested in the history of the South African Railways. They had some nice locos and cars back then in the late 70's. They first came out with French passenger cars painted in the Blue Train scheme. The electric locomotices had the Italian trucks! I still have them all. Hello to all the Afrikaners and Boers!

I still have my SAR surburban train in the original box, along with a Trans-Karoo freight train with Electric units. All still in working order. Unfortunately, I now live in a small house that does not have space to build such a wonderful track that Willie built for us to appreciate.

I like the scratch built buildings and the nice rendering of the Karoo landscape, the layout catches the atmosphere perfectly.
Are your class 25 and 25NC loco's scratch built? I built a 25 condenser somewhere in the late 1980s, but here in Europe there was not much one could find in the sense of drawings.
But then I got a book from the book shop at York station in the UK, and in there were a side and front elevation which I just had to rescale.
The drivers side and top and rear of the tender had to be worked out by assessing from pictures and some guess work, so I see some differences between your tenders and mine.
The internet is a blessing, there is so much more one can find online now.

This looks like a giant layout plan......! What was the size involved....? I had a Hornby layout plan of just 4' x 8" which is unpresentable at all but I do have quite a number of locomotives and substantial collection of rolling stocks..... Any advice...? Thanks
