    I worked in a Korean kitchen for about 4 months. One day the owner shoved his cousin into the kitchen for the Korean kitchen manager to deal with (he had to teach the boy how to hold a knife). While they spoke korean to each other, every now and then you'd hear the English "slice". We asked him why he was saying Slice, and if Slice didnt have a korean word for it. Worry not friends, rest assured in Korean there is a word for Slice. He just forgot what the word was, living in the US for so long.

    From the videos and recipes I've seen of people making proper ramen from scratch it actually looks like quite a lot of work and time is put in especially when it comes to making the broth. That's kinda why instant ramen is a thing cause all the hard work has been done for you. Weird that this video basically did instant ramen but in glossy soft focus.

      The problem is, it isn't even ramen. Instant ramen most people have in the cupboard, is closer to ramen than this thing. At the least, one should use the correct noodle (Ramen) if you want to call it ramen. The noodle as Uncle Roger says is typically yellow, due to the alkali that is infused into the noodle (the kansui) that turns it the yellow color. The noodle here was so white, it didn't even look like it was instant ramen noodles. The broth is all wrong and the toppings are all wrong. Sure they added green onions at the end but you can find green onions in many of the noodle dishes including udon and soba. It is more closer to a hot pot style dish with noodle than it is ramen. Its like putting carrots, tomato, spinach, mushrooms, into a beef broth and calling it New England Clam Chowder. All these people are just calling it ramen since that brings the views. Its basically clickbait, which from a professional channel like the BBC is quite low.

    • @yohannessulistyo4025
      @yohannessulistyo4025 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ramen is "vendor food" - a thing in Asia. It is as complicated and quite a hassle to prepare, cook, and clean the mess thereafter, not to mention how long it takes to properly make one. It is just like Vietnamese Pho - which broth took overnight to cook.
      It is never meant to be cooked at home, or as casually and aeshtetically shown by Nigella Lawson and her BBC crew. People often romanticise foreign food the way people treat Italian pasta - which can be easily recreated back at home. Yes, most of our popular restaurant food is not really home cooking, in contrast with Italian food. Nobody expect everyone live in the middle of major city have a massive 18,000 BTU wok burner.
      As uncle Roger often touts, Asian houses have "outdoor kitchen" - similar to western houses' BBQ patio, where we cook our messiest and best food.

    As an indian, we dont grow up with chopsticks so its hard to use for me. But my younger brother loves all types of japanese and chinese dishes, so he learned to use chopsticks quite quickly and easily by just practicing at home picking up grains of rice. So it should be easy to learn if you really want to and put in the work.

    Ever since I saw Uncle Roger reviewing Nigella Lawson, I have looked through some other Nigella videos. I found that it's main purpose was never the recipe, but the remedy for insomnia. I think she should change her career into some sort of insomnia therapist because it really worked well. When I have trouble falling sleep, I opened the video, lie down, and pass out. I even ask my brother to do the timing, it only take two minutes to fall asleep at most! No jokes!!! I swear to god!!!
    Also, to people who want to learn how to use chopsticks, take your time, don't feel pressure. I learned to use chopsticks properly when I was ten, and I am an Asian😛😛

    About the forgetting the language part - you don’t have to live in another country. I live in Russia, but we are taught in English, and you forget the language esp when you are stuck learning offline for a long time. I remember walking to the store after online classes and hearing people speak Russian and be like: wow I never heard it in such a long while…

    Thank you so much for all of your wonderfully educational and -- as for these reaction vids -- hilarious as well content! I used to be a mere ignorant food enjoyer (though I did visit Thailand and the home of Uncle Roger, Malaysia, as a youngster, and man was that food absolutely amazing!!) before eventually dating a traditionally trained Italian and French chef woman for a couple of years (who taught me a lot of good basic techniques for just about anything; chopping, mis en place, making risottos, mother sauces, you name it) and being drilled like some kind of army recruit in the kitchen. xD It was a lot of stressful work but it did make me an above average home cook for sure. Recently I have been looking out for ways to expand my culinary knowledge and by watching basically all of your videos I have picked up so many good things I hadn't been taught or thought of before. Props to you Chef James, I like all of your videos and subscribe to your channel (rarely take my time to do that kind of stuff but I really wanted to help however I could get your channel to that coveted 1m sub range eventually, and besides your content truly deserves such treatment from yours truly!). Dried shiitake mushrooms take at least 2-3 hours to rehydrate before they're ready for cooking. And you can't really put shiitake into the broth just like that, cause it can have a funky taste that just overwhelms everything.
    Also, the broth, noodles and toppings for ramen have to be prepared separately and then only assembled in the bowl at the end. Depending on the toppings, it can be a labour intensive meal... that's why it's more of a restaurant dish rather than a homecooked meal.
    What Nigella is making is closer to a sukiyaki-style all-in-one hotpot stew with added noodles that Asian people do make at home, and there are variations of this across different countries. But it is not ramen.
