One thing I always try to account for when I'm determining things like "cost per play" is how many players played the game. If I spent $200 on a game and only played it twice, that would be $100 per play, which is terrible. But what if both games had four players? I look at that as $25 per play, which is still expensive, but much better. I always compare to things like going to dinner, or going to the movies. What if I treated my friends to dinner, or a movie? Is the cost per person close to what it would cost me to do that? If so, I feel like we got good value as long as we had fun. I try to look at it as "I paid X amount of dollars for Y number of people to have a fun night". It's like if you had a party at your house where you catered food. You wouldn't analyze only how much you personally ate to determine if you got good value, you would analyze the total number of people you fed. I see purchasing and playing board games the same way.

Another benefit is that, when you buy a board game, you're buying a physical product. You can keep it as long as you like, or even resell it. It can provide good experiences over a span of years. When it comes to food, it's nice for a moment and then gone. Same with a movie, aside from the memories you have of it. Board games last longer, and you can always get at least some value back out of it

I also often think about the number of hours as well. $200/2/4/3 for 2 plays of four people for 3 hours each comes down to about $8.33 per hour per person per play. If movie ticket for 2.5 hours cost you $18 you're getting the same or better value, plus you have something physical you can resell/donate/do something else with.

I will also give a discount for "time spent painting the minis" as that's something I enjoy doing and is part of the value I get from having a game.

I deeply questioned why I bought MD2 but we finally tabled it and played most of the scenarios, then decided we'd play the Heavenfall campaign. THen the 4 Horsemen Campaign. At that point I was hungry for something different, but I can say I no longer have any regret about MD2. It was a LOT of fun to play.

I'd be interested if you could have evaluated it based on number of people as well for those plays. If I pay $200 for a game, get four plays, but each time play with 5 people, then for my 'entertainment dollar' each person's 'cost to play' was 200/4/5 or $10 per person per play. Then if you divide it by hours to play (let's say 3) it becomes 3 dollars per hour per person per play, which is cheap compared to most other forms of entertainment (Video games often are cheaper because of the sheer number of hours of play some of them get. I know I played a Free to Play game for over 2100 hours over a number of years, though I probably put a good $200 into buying currency over those years from 2013 to 2022).

Next time the rules should be updated to exclude games that you've sold or traded. That will measure games that are expensive per play but you still value it enough to keep it.

We never finished Tainted Grail. It was a bit unbalanced. We felt pretty much" max level"* and were at chapter 8/15. It felt like we had seen all the gameplay, even if we had only seen half the story.
That being said? We had tons of fun. About 8 full evenings of playing. Have very fond memories.
I love solo RPGs/choise your own adventure style books, and this was basically that but we played two player
*it doesnt use levels, but we had very high stats, skills and resources. We almost never failed a skill/stat check and most combat was a breeze

Without doing a deep dive, I can guarantee that every single game that would be on this list for me would be a campaign game. CoD, ISS Vanguard, etc. I just love them waaaaay more than the rest of my family, so they rarely get played (strong exception for Sleeping Gods). I know I could play them solo, but I enjoy playing them with people, not alone. I just need to get a game group together because I'm a sucker for these games and I won't stop backing them.

I always count the value of my played games compared to other forms of entertainment. For instance. If I go to the movie theatre I'm spending $25 for around 2hrs of entertainment. So translated to board game time, every two hours I accrue $25 of credit toward the purchase price. Example. I spent $200 on Burncycle. I've played it about a half a dozen times. My total time playing is somewhere around 12hrs. At $25 every two hours (movie time) I accrued $150 of "credit" towards that game. I sold it for $100 so more than made up for the cost with the time spent playing.

A question for Alex and everyone: Do you set any rules for yourself prior to purchasing a game? I have a series of questions but rule #1 for myself is read the manual before buying in. It's a good barometer for gameplay and if I can't bring myself to get through it in a sitting, that game ain't getting played.

Interesting to see Street Masters: Aftershock on here. I've gotten at least 50 plays out of the Street Masters line and counting. Marvel Champions seemed interesting, but I'm not a fan of deck construction, so that's probably why Street Masters scratched just the right itch for me.
The TMNT Adventures games, I played a lot solo, and certainly can't recommend it solo; the fact that attacks can just whiff based on the dice alone in solo mode is a real "feels bad" moment. At least in 1 vs Many mode, the villain is rolling defense dice too, so I'd like to table it again trying out that mode once I find someone to actually try it with.

I'll face the same music with TG and TGRevised as well as Black Rose Wars and BRWR; even more so as I have the painted minis. Anyway I'm just a theoretical gamer for awhile now (had IRL other priorities emerge) so the math you are applying is especially worse for me in comparison. For me I just look forward to a future where I'll have or make more time for enjoying the collection I'm managing. I'll continue to acquire and maintain the collection but I won't purge or worry about such things as price per play. Perhaps someday my collection will be donated to a community center or become a basis for starting a board game cafe type business and I can play vicariously through patrons. The key IMHO to carving out that future is to learn to apply your tactical and strategic skills honed in playing board games to investing in various financial markets. Set aside enough early in life and compounding returns can help carve out a future where you can realistically say you will have time to enjoy your fine board game (or Lego) collection. Of course monetizing your board game hobby by becoming a pro-influencer doesn't hurt either but for the rest of us we have to think about this as a potential post-retirement hobby. I do hope I can retain my mental capacity to match up with a retirement timeline. Really looking forward to that "mentally active" retirement community emerging to supplant the golf course club houses in practice today. That said its an expensive hobby and reaching the financial inflection point to maintain this lifestyle could actually delay a potential retirement date. Hopefully spending will stabilize a bit after we see all the favorites (top 200 or so BGG rated games) get their deluxifications. Who are we kidding, the cult of the now will continue to flip the generals out of the top 200 and cause us to dwell on what to do with our past unplayed favorites. In your case, perhaps sooner than later since the flow of games into your home is so much greater than most of us (due to it essentially being your career).

Thanks for reminding me why I haven't bought Heroes of Land, Air & Sea. The Last light designer loves the game but your point is similar to the investment required to enjoy Twilight Struggle. You really have to know the deck through and through to play TS well. By the time you get to the 3rd "age" you have less experience with it and can really botch your play due to lack of knowledge of the cards available.

If im going to use your rule of not counting these, I'm still high because of games I've only played a handful of times.

Tainted Grail is definitely on my list. I have started the game several times and really, really enjoyed my plays but when I heard that they were bringing out a new rulebook I decided to wait to continue my latest play until the new rules came out. Still excited about it and expect to make up the cost per play quickly once it arrives. Ironically, probably my worst cost per play is Marvel United. I went all-in for the gameplay on both seasons 1 and 2 but as much as I like it and as well as it has gone over with everyone I play with, it doesn't get to the table enough. When season 3 hit I only got the base game so that I could get the stretch goals with the new equipment cards. Other contenders are ISS Vanguard and Western Legends. The good news is that all of these games are ones I really enjoy and simply need to find the right gaming groups or find time that I can leave them set up on the table to play solo over multiple days.
