  • Where does the tone come from in an electric guitar? Why, a combination of the wood, pickups, scale length, and potentiometers!
In Jim Lill’s video “Where Does The Tone Come From In An Electric guitar” Jim dissects the construction and electronics of an electric guitar to see what happens if you remove each component bit by bit. In the end he compares the two systems side by side, wood and air, by strumming just one chord across the strings. They don’t sound the same to me in his video, very distinct. Why is that? Would more differences have become apparent if he were to be able to do more than strum an open chord? What would the difference have been had he been able to actually play the air guitar?
And, why do Luthier's and Players continue to notice these subtle differences, to different degrees of appreciation?
This video demonstrates why you can’t debunk the “Tonewood Myth” by removing all the tonewood and bolting the components to your workbench.
Tell me what you think in the comments below!
