TRADING ON MARGIN - Applying Leverage To Trade Stocks.

- In this video we look at stock trading on margin alternatively referred to as using leverage.
Using margin or leverage, is often frowned upon due to its misuse amongst amateur traders, but for the well informed professional trader using margin can make a significant positive difference to your trading returns.
I personally choose to use leverage as an efficient use of capital, although I do have vast experience in the markets and fully understand the concept of using leverage in a margin account.
Discipline and risk management are key attributes to applying such leverage, a lack of either can be devastating.

Really useful thanks! Have you ever used leverage on Forex to hedge against, for example, the GBP strengthening and reducing the value of your US stocks? This has been a big problem since September last year.
Hi Gary, not personally but a useful tactic. I try to balance Uk/EU stock with US to offset some risk though.

Many thanks Gareth. Excellent. I was waiting for this one! Strangely I differ in that I use 2:1 leverage for my 'buy and hold' but only about 1.2 to 1 for 'trading' - the rationale being that my 'buy and hold' has safer assets. The annual cost of leverage is about 3.2% per annum on the nominal value of my holdings, and much of this recouped by the dividends. It's too soon to tell if this is a winning strategy, so I'll be bearing your advice in mind.

Trading on 100x Leverage on forex is so crazy already. I can't imagine the craziness trading 500x and even 1000x leverage.

You can't use a stop loss with a market correction or crash though.. So that 22% max loss can be much more. How do you use "5:1 and more" to trade stocks with a reg-t account? I don't think it's possible
It's not possible if your in a country where CFD's are banned just like the US.
Hi - Yes i use CFD's but i'm UK based. That is true but you can use guaranteed stop losses, regardless though I'm willing to take on the slippage risks when weighted against the upside benefits.

Don't understand what is a relation between 10% risk and 1.88%.
I cant recall which point you refer, but it could be 10% risk, as in stop loss distance, or position size, and the 1.88% is the risk on equity is
