      Was that thing you found @7:11 a chunk of slag? I wonder if there are remnants of a kiln nearby. John, the Scottish Detectorist posted a vlog w/the successful Jethro program settings, perhaps he can help sort out your D2 issues, or have you already figured things out? (I'm new & viewing your vlogs out of order.) Congrats on a fab day & new permission🥳

    Still on catchup. Thoughts on your test. My first one was ground balancing. At Detectival in the BIG Roman field I was ground balancing about every 20 minutes and getting different numbers. My other thought was that when a coin has been in the ground for 2,000 years it is bonded and in full contact with the soil as an amalgous unit with the soil. The soil especially if moist transmits the signal via the soil. There is also a metal halo around the coin caused by dissolved metals. That's why we lose detail, the surface dissolves. Your test coin had soil and air which insulated the coin from the coil. When the coin was on top of the soil and covered with soil, the ground balance aspect doesn't into play because the coin was above the soil not shielded in a hole. The ring is stunning, the shoulder matches the style of a fibula. Loved all the roman pottery as well, the heavy piece was indeed the base of a vessel, the mound in the middle the inside. Sometimes you see the potter's fingerprint. I have a Roman Oil Lamp with one, purchased not dug.

    @edwardcroote9588 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well done on the ring. Fantatic find. Re: the test. When you fill the hole back in, press the soil down as firmly as you can so it is compressed. The signal will die a little through every small air pocket in the ground.

    It is very easy to get psyched out with a metal detector, but you have to trust your previous experience and your settings that have given you success on good targets. There will always be anomalies over which you have no control, but they will be the exception. Tweaks to factory settings undoubtably work to your advantage, but there are still limits based on your particular location. If you spend too much time fiddling, you take away from detecting time, and you might just lose out on "easy" targets like the ring on the surface. You have already proven your ability and the capability of the Deus 2, so it comes down to maximizing your swing time and organizing your search so as to not be missing areas, nor duplicating search areas. The joy I find in detecting is to not be fretting over results. You already exhibit a similar mindset, so just let the percentages of good finds be your reward for being a history hunter and not a treasure seeker. LOL, we all need that reminder from time to time, myself included. You make great videos because of your passion and eagerness to research and learn, so please continue with your passion and your honest reporting via videos. And don't forget that there is dumb luck, good luck, and hard luck wrapped into the equation, especially when your search areas are large and the variables of weather and terrain will always stand in the way of a "perfect" detecting plan and procedure. A 10" or 13" coil is going to sometimes miss a good target by centimeters, and sometimes in a 17-acre field that same relatively tiny coil is happily going to signal "dead on" for a wonderful artifact. Persistence is many times your friend, but we are never guaranteed that persistence will win the prize. And that, dear Ellie, is what keeps you getting back out there on your fields! Thanks for bringing us along from the comfort of our easy chairs...we are all rooting for you, and some, myself included, are also praying regularly for your safety and success!

      What good advice! I do trust my detector, and myself actually. I just felt I needed to see what all these other settings actually do. I’ll keep getting my confidence with what the buttons are for but probably still fall back on the old faithful settings!

    Yay! That's a really promising permission, especially with so much high quality pottery. Have a look on Google Earth desktop (I don't think this works on a phone). Click on the date in the bottom left and you'll be taken to that image. In Norfolk it's typically 1985 and super low res. But then use the slider in the top left to go through the satellite images between then and now. If you're lucky there'll be a drought year that might just show old roads or even buildings. A great example is Venta Icenorum near Caister St Edmund by Norwich scrolled back to 2012. Good luck!

    Could you take a bit of the soil from the field home with you, and put it in a flower pot with your coin test to try the different setting out on the detector? You would be able to easily bury the coin at different depths in the flower pot. It would save you a trip to the field, and you could take your time to work out the best settings on the detector. Just a thought.

    • @miss_detectorist
      @miss_detectorist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s a really good idea. On reflection I think perhaps the problem is that coin. It’s absolutely wafer thin and very wobbly edges. I think I’m going to repeat the test with a good coin next. In principle it was a good test to run!

    Hi Ellie, nice to see you out detecting. The ring is special and it was made for you. The coins are great too. Yes ground balancing is a must do process whenever you change locations or notice a color change or consistency in the soil. It’s a simple enough procedure and can make all of the difference. Best regards… John

    • @miss_detectorist
      @miss_detectorist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @shooterjohn7163
      @shooterjohn7163 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@miss_detectorist auto balance usually works well after you do an initial ground balance. Then if you notice anything out of the ordinary you can quickly balance again. Where I live in California our soil is very highly mineralized so I’m constantly rebalancing. It sounds like you have it figured out, so you should be fine.

    It is a good idea to test a coin I think to remind your ears after a break. Burying a coin is not quite the same as an original as there is a halo effect where the target has reacted over time with the soil. Many times I can dig a target and find it has dissapeared to the machine once the soil is disturbed.😉🇨🇦

    • @miss_detectorist
      @miss_detectorist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน
