Classic Game Room reviews OUT RUN 2 for the Xbox published by Sega in 2004, a sequel to the amazing Out Run arcade game. This review features the Xbox version of OutRun 2 being played on Xbox 360 which does have some bugs like freezing framerates and audio glitches, but remains a fun and totally awesome arcade racing game. CGR review of OUTRUN 2 has gameplay from Out Run 2 on Xbox showing OutRun 2 gameplay in HD from Xbox 360.
my local bowling alley just installed the dual cabinet arcade version of this game into their little arcade area and I absolutely loved it, it the best sega racing experience I've had since daytona usa and sega rally championship
4 years later and the bastards have not serviced the cabinets at all, never. To the point that the steering shaft on the right cab is completely busted and can do a continuous 360 spin, I hate their guts now 😢

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is about the only PSP game (the other being Everybody's Golf) that I would recommend to everyone. Amazing game.
The original outrun is hidden in a cheat. Look online for it. It's nineteen86 if my memory serves me correct.
i want a roadtrip online game, travel around america or other parts of the world, meet up at fishing spots, theme parks, caravan parks, an open world road trip game!!!! cars breaking down, service required, oil changes etc

No, it doesn't contain the Outrun 2 course, only the Outrun 2 SP course. The gameplay between Outrun 2 and Outrun 2 SP (ie Online Arcade) are different so it's worth playing both.
I had no idea that this sequel existed! I look forward for OutRun3 to be in the works and have online play! That would be fun!
iT WILl be awesome if they can patch this game to run in 4k or HD on the new Xbox x series

I like how the driver brings his girlfriend/wife along for the race, and also is she throwing cigarette butts out the window? Very nice and very nostalgic.

I used to sit and play this game for hours on end on my original XBOX, which still works! I now play this on my PC
I remember buying this game in 2004. It was so much fun and still looks good today. The music is outstanding too. I downloaded the soundtrack from the GalbadiaHotel website. It would be great if Sega made a new OutRun game for the next generation consoles, especially since the last OutRun game was only available as a digital download for the Europe PlayStation Store.
@ultimochefe it's also on PS2 btw but the point is the game was written for the Xbox architecture (including the coin-op machine) and plays best over there... in fact you never get optimal performanc on any PC since the developers don't know your configuration...
I just shredded every turn with a drift in an enzo at an arcade. Im hooked
What I find most impressive about this game is all the hatchback econo cars and minivans doing 150 on the highway XD

@Tryzon I agree, but I also appreciate that he let's everyone see the glitches as I'm sure most people watching this don't own an original xbox anymore.
@ProtoMario In alot of the early books something intresting happens and the characters celebrate christmas. This tradition is broken later on as christmas and presents becomes rather a impossibility. But it also gives them something thats new to air instead of Rudolph the red nose reindeer. And that one movie that has a dog named Olive that saves christmas.
Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast is even better. Not only does it have all the stages from Outrun 2 but also a set of completely new ones.

I thought the drifting was actually quite fun in this game. It seemed much easier to pull off than in other car games that require you to drift.

Wow, the visuals in this look much better than the PS2 version of Outrun 2006 you reviewed. Does the Xbox version of Outrun 2006 look this good or did it get a similar visual downgrade? I know the original Outrun 2 arcade was running on the Xbox-equivalent Chihiro hardware, but there seems to be more content in 2006 so I was wondering whether it retained this quality while also getting all the upgraded modes.
The original Outrun arcade game is in this one. You can unlock it when you type in the right code.
I've got Outrun 2, but I also have Outrun 2006 for the Playstation 2, they're more or less the same game, I believe the 2006 has more features, but either way, you can get the exact same game on Xbox Live or the Playstation Network as Outrun Online, for just 10 bucks, so choose your flavor.
Outrun 2 is also on the XBL Arcade, just called "Outrun" yet doesn't include the original (was a little disappointed about that) but would recommend that over the Outrun 2 Disk.

we have this at our local arcade, it's brilliant and fantastic to play in the car seat set up.
This game runs flawlessly on the original XBox. I was disappointed when I tried it on the 360 as it did seem quite buggy. That's why I kept my original XBox - For kick-ass games like this one!

It's weird seeing frame rate issues on 360, I have the PAL version and my 360 is my way to play it, but I've played the entire game and never dropped a frame.
Unless it's the resolution, I've heard some games have issues at different resolutions, like Project Gotham Racing which doesn't boot at anything above 480P.
Though I turned off "Display Discovery" in the settings and run mine at 1366 x 768 VGA mode over HDMI and it looks way better than 1080P in HDMI mode, but also improves performance on some iffy Xbox backwards compatible titles.
Mine ran at a solid 60 fps the whole time.
Has anyone else noticed how damn fast the traffic is going too? I had no idea a Mazda MPV could move that fast!

- had this game on XBOX and PC, it really makes justice to the Classic outrun making everything Better!
I got Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast for PSP it was awsome, it also came with outrun2 as part of the game which was nice
I like these arcade racers and Formula 1 racers,the latter because turning is nice and tight, not slippery like racer simulators.Arcade racing also permits FUN insane speeds and drifts.
On another note, I think Microsoft just designed poor backwards compatibility for the original Xbox games on a 360. I mean, you look at Gamecube games played on the Nintendo's Wii and Playstation 1 games played on Sony's Playstation 2 and 3, or even Atari 2600 games on a 7800, you would rarely notice any issues.
There is a version of this available EXCLUSIVELY on the 360 that doesn't have any of those issues.
I have outrun 2006 coast to coast on PS2. And this Outrun 2 for the big black box with the huge X on it.
There were tons of poor reviews at the time. Really I think CGR nailed why the series is such a Trip to experience over other racing games. Magical Sound Shower anyone?
Drifting is a MUST in Outrun2.
@hazardous1990 The visual style they adapted for this game always ages well. Same goes for Sega games like Jet Set Radio or Crazy Taxi.

Why not get Outrun Arcade available through the PlayStation Network Store and Xbox Live Arcade? Same game play as Outrun 2 but upgraded to HD and you can post your scores on a worldwide scoreboard?
There need to be a racetrack in forza 3 that's crazy like in wipeout... the mix between realistic car handling and impossible turns and dives would be freaking great.
Agreed that there are some backwards-compatible issues on a 360 - its much better and fluid on the original xbox, especially with surround sound and an optical cable. Great game. One of the reasons I still have the orig xbox still hooked up.

Outrun 2 for Xbox was actually a home port of a sit-down Outrun 2 arcade game, and a decent port at that. However, I like Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast for PS2 better.
BTW: Play with the drift - you can get better race times that way.

I LOVE THIS GAME! Played it as much as I could at the arcade. But I don't think I ever went as fast as you are playing it.
I always play Splash Wave because I just love that song. I don't know how to the others sound like but I don't care, Splash Wave is good enough.
One more note: this has such a Daytona USA feel to it, I mean, even the design of the tracks remind me so much of it, and that is bloody awesome. It also makes sense because when it comes to SEGA, arcade racers are the shit.

I love how the top speed on all the cars is around 180. even though some of them could really surpass that (f40)...

The original Outrun featured the Ferrari Testarossa, as mentioned in the review. Outrun in anything but a Ferrari just wouldn't be Outrun. I applaud Sega for giving you a choice of several Ferrari to unlock and drive, especially when getting that Ferrari license couldn't have been cheap.
drifting is what makes outrun 2 so good it's all about the drifting try it you'll enjoy it.
Nice review, it's convinced me to part with 2.27 to get this, hope it's not the same as Outrun 2006 C2C as I have this on PS3
There's an OutRun 2 on XBLA (and PSN). Plays smooth as silk.

@Caluma122 I had to install a new DVD drive in my old Xbox. The old DVD drive failed after just a couple of years. But other than that, you're right. The damn thing is indestructible.
@Indead The XBox Live version is not the exact same game, it lacks many of the cars, features and modes that the version in this review and the OutRun 2006 versions have.

I want a Original Xbox hardwere to replace on PS2 hardwere because the Graphic on Xbox is very good.
Well, not all of them can be played. There is a list of compatible games on Wikipedia. Also, some games suffer from a lot of slowdown issues. But there are games that run like they are running on a real Xbox.
I love that you barely overtake some cars, even at 185 mph.
this game has always impressed me with how pretty it looked. Just wish the car got banged up when you crashed :)

If you want to play this game, it's best played on the PC via Steam, after playing around with some settings, cause on a dual core CPU or better, it will run so fast, it's unplayable, at least on AMD based machines, with Nvidia GPU's. It's listed as OutRun coast to coast, the multiplayer/online parts however, don't work, cause SEGA took down the servers, still a totally awesome way to kill a rainy afternoon.
yeah, there is no lag whatsoever on the Xbox version, it's sad that the 360 can't emulate it what well

outrun is on the xbox live arcade and it looks to be the same games as here btw.
The color Scheme has a lot Sega like styling to it. Yes i know it was made by Sega. lol
Outrun 2006 cleaned up the issues with the 2004 version...
Mark should get an original Xbox to avoid all these incompatibility issues. Some games completely fail to work on a 360, for instance.
This game is so fast-paced that other racing games would need a fast-forward mode to provide this sense of speed xD.
