Yeah, I remember my aunt had this as well as a frogger and an etch-a-sketch plugnplay, but it broke after a while sadly :(
I grew up with this. This was my first gaming experience.
I'd be impressed with anyone who could tell the difference between a B flat note and an A sharp, mostly because they are the same note, haha. Great review as always.

I still have this and enjoy playing my all time fave shooter Galagam Lotsa quarters that this addicting grandfather of the shmups genre took from me then in the arcades!!

I have this same machine, and I gotta say, it's suprisingly good quality. The joystick and buttons feel good, and the plasic it strong. Don't leave your batteries in it when not in use, the one I picked up had some pretty bad corrosion on the terminals that had to be scraped off in order to get power.
I'd LOVE to look inside that controller and see how they made that steering control work. If that could be replicated it would make a WORLD of difference for all the classic driver and paddle games that are virtually unplayable with a joystick. Yes indeed, gonna have research that little gem! Thanks for another awesome (and 100% gluten free!) review.

If you like Pole Position in the arcade and own a nice CRT you have to own this one just for Pole Position I think.

I love this one especially. I haven’t played it in years, but I remember it fondly. I loved all the games included on this set, but I especially liked Mappy, Mrs. Pac-Man, and Pole Position.
Mappy Is My Favorite Game Of All Time!

The No swear Gamer, when u pressed the button on the Mappy display, it was probably dying.

I've got the namco plug & play device with Rally X, which was my first arcade love.
Also has pacman, dig dug, & a shooting game.
Yet I just wanted it for the rallyx, well worth checking out.

Oh man, I want one of these so bad, but sad the fire buttons are on the left... I played Galaga for hours at Showbiz Pizza and Chuck E Cheese when I was a youngin. Fav game of all time.
How do I hook it up ? I have my cable box hooked up, do I have to unplug anything? And what setting is my tv supposed to be on
I kinda did the assembly by myself with the Pac Man 35th anniversary connect and play...
I have the Game Key version, but I really like the Pole Position. The joystick is 8 way, which is why it doesn't work as well for Pacman style games.
I'm surprised they made 2 versions of this plug and play. One of them has the game key cartridge slot.
This one was quite an improvement over Jakks Pacific's handling of the Pac-Man Plug 'n Play before. The ports are a lot more accurate (formatting wise) and do a fine job.
I have one with the slot but never found any game keys for it..

The sound is definitely off on Xevious. I have this plug and play (as well as the Mortal Kombat one), and I never noticed this because I didn't really play Xevious on it. Pole Position also sounds a bit off.
Also Mappy rocks, along with it's later arcade sequel, Hopping Mappy.
I am wondering what kind of hardware they are using to emulate the games,
I had one years ago, that gave several options for ms. Pac man, including hyper. Does this one have that?
I have an equivalent unit that comes with 2 game "keys" (mini cartridges) that gives you a total of 10 games. The Pole Position is nice. The inclusion of both Rally X and New Rally X makes the first one redundant. I would be happy with an arcade Ms Pac Man, because it is one of the greatest games of all time, but all the home versions I have tried are too hard to control. Gamepads don't work well with any game where you have to change direction quickly, like Pac Man and even Donkey Kong. The arcade stick almost needs to nailed down, because when I play Ms Pac Man with the plug and play I don't get the accurate response I need. If I had a way to keep unit steady then it might work.
I have had this for awhile, love it, but recently the handle moves but ms Pac-Man won’t move down. Took a look inside and the blue wire became disconnected.... any suggestions how to find out where it belongs? Anyone I can share a photo with for some guidance?

I grabbed the box and it was brand new. It was kinda falling apart so I glued it after a 2 years. It fell apart. So we bought a new one for Ms Pacman. No other games it is fun.
Even though the steering on pole position is good, I personally find the game insanely difficult. You have to do absolutely perfect in order to win (which I have never done), meanwhile in some of the namco compilations there was a lot of leniency in the difficulty.

I Have A Question. I bought one from eBay and just got it today in the mail. I plugged it in, played it, and enjoyed. The only concern is everything (the games and fonts on the main menu) seem to be a bit blurry. Do you think it's the 80's graphics of the games or did I buy a bad one? I'm using it on a HD tv also.
You’re cords could just be suffering from use it could also be the fact that these werent made for an hd tv so you are used to seeing hd when these run on 480p which is what all the box screen tv,s used at the time

I have the original one. That had nothing on the system telling you that you had to twist the joystick for pull position. Why did they only put that on the second edition
Why would you expect a continue option on an emulated aracde machine that had no continues to begin with? Strange....
Polka Naut While I probably shouldn't expect it if it wasn't in the original, I still would've liked it if they added the option to continue. Occasionally, companies do add various options when porting old arcade games.
Polka Naut- Because putting a quarter in allowed you to continue so there's no reason they couldn't have put in a button/continue option to keep playing. There are so many other games that do this I'm surprised you don't know about it. It's like you don't know what you're talking about. Strange...

Mappy Xevious and Pole Position 😭
I have the game key version. Bought it new in like 2003, and didn't take it out of the package until around 3 years ago. I am concerned that the cartridge interface is not very durable because it looks cheap.
The control on Ms. Pacman doesn't seem to me to be very good. Ms. Pac Man really needs a 4 way joystick, and this is an 8 way joystick. Even so, I am not sure that the joystick is of sufficient quality to play Pac Man because you need to be able to change direction quickly.
So if I use this at all, it will be to play Pole Position, because the game is impossible to emulate.
I sill have mine I paid 20 bucks for it in 2004 and the cheapest one i saw on amazon for 125 bucks
That's crazy! The price may have gone up a little since I reviewed it, but I saw several used for under $20 on ebay.

I still have mine but my joystick is a little broken and I have the Pac-Man one it’s honestly better than any game now

that joystick might have been cool for Xevious but it makes Pac Man near unplayable, sad since that's the "main feature" game.

I had this but than it broke. :( But I have a new Pac-Man Plug-n-Play which is black, it doesn't have Ms. Pac-Man which kinda sucks but it's still awesome. :)

Mine broke and it's a funny story... I was 5 and I was playing my favorite game pole position. I was far from the tv 📺 and it was stretching the cords of the plug n play. So I accidentally fell back in my chair and the cords ripped and the sound jack got stuck in my tv. It's still there to this day.
Same mine broke first went pole position then the rest i used that fucker daily

i dont like this plug n play as much as the pac man one i would much rather they wouldve just had the 4 way joy stick and make xevious slightly worse ratther than having an 8 way one and it makes me get caught on corners in ms pac man ALL the time i still like it though

Its an okay system. But the thing that really irritates me is how they messed up ms. Pac Man's shape totally. I mean its nothing like in the arcade. She is more circle than round and the colour is off too... Yeah its yellow but not the same yellow they used in the arcade version. I can see these things, and i just wanna say that this abomination that calls itself arcade, insults me by existing.
The game key edition is WAY better.
Namco Plug & Play TV games are so pathetic these days. Why would you play this trash these days when you could instead play Bubsy 3D or Big Rigs Over the Road Racing?

blurry what do you mean like spikes or colors i have one just tell me which one i can help.

cta637 Sorry, no real idea. You could try cleaning the medal part of the yellow plug with some windex and try fresh batteries.

It might be becouse of the cords going out. Sometimes you need to replace batteries and wiggle the cords in the tv.
