Yes I would happily buy one here in Canada. 16 miles to work, charge at work & drive home on Ev. Only have to use gasoline on weekends driving out of town.
I'm pretty sure you don't understand the way Congestion Charge (CC) works. In London CC is charged to most vehicles, though they offer exemptions to certain types of vehicles such as, in this case, low emission vehicles producing 75 g/km CO2 or less. So you don't need to switch to Electric mode for low emissions to pay less CC. Your car should be rated to produce 75 g/km CO2 or less when registered and you will qualify for the discount, so long as you tell the City of London Council before entering a CC zone. Pretty Simple, I think...
Australian here, currently got an older S-Class. This is very appealing, not to save money on petrol, no, this is good because we can avoid petrol station as much as possible. We don't have LWB here. just a short 740e
0-60 in 5.3, also comfort and luxury just like any other 7 series, good but not compelling to most shopping in this segment in the U.S. A niche this would be a fantastic option for is the executive limousine fleet, where much of the time chauffeurs are idling on the clock while waiting for the clients.
I don't think the London congestion charging zone works like that (i.e. PHEVs have to be running in electronic mode to qualify for free entry to the zone), I think it's just based on the amount of grams of CO2 per km a car emits, think the current limit is 75g/km
To answer your question - I come from Malaysia where hybrid cars are tax-exempted. This means that instead of paying over $200,000 USD for an S400, you'll pay about $140,000 USD for it an S400 hybrid. The price is why we and others picked the S400h over the conventional version. The hybrid sold so well that MB took the conventional S400 out of the line-up. Tax on foreign cars here is ridiculous - for example, the new Levante just got released and it's selling for just over $200,000 USD at the current exchange rate.
In looking for a car and I’m pretty settled on a 7 series and was considering the 740e. But after watching your video this is my conclusion, consider what your mileage and driving style is before getting one. I usually only drive 6 miles to work but often drive a little further and take trips with the kids. The thing is, that low range means you will end up using EV mode a lot and that 2.0 engine doesn’t sound like it will cut it. Not in a 7 series
I think the packaging of the battery has a lot to do with extreme condition heat management and crash safety, not only in terms of structural integrity but also fire hazard, so they cannot just stuff the cells wherever under the sheet metal.
I'm using f02 (750i, 2013 m.y.) and w221 (s500\s550). I'm not ready to exchange it for hybrid versions because I like unlimited power under the pedal, hybrids are significantly slower than any turbo-v8. Region: US CA, also I owned f01 (750) in south Europe (Spain, France, Italy).
I've been shopping for a 740e for a while. Not ready to buy but very interested once the used ones come down a bit in price. WHY, though, am I seeing so many 740e's branded with a lemon title? I'm not seeing that with 740Li's. Is there a real problem with the 740e or is this just a case of rich folks who thought they wanted to go green but then weren't willing to give up the power of a 6 or 8 cylinder? That could be a great deal for me if the car is sound but I can't afford to take on a maintenance nightmare.
the only problem with this type of tech is that people are understanding it wrong! since when a luxury car is a sport car? 300 and afew hp is more than enough because nobody drives a luxury sedan faster than this hybrid can deliver! it's like when u want to have 1.000.000 hp but u only use like3! :)) all that supercars with zilion of hp driving with 30 mph just like my wife's Hyundai! People...we need to be more efficient and more enviromental because it's fucking HOT in Winter! #WarpDriveM
@MotoManTV I have a '16 750i xDrive, and I would have considered something like this if it had more range. You hit it pretty spot on, at least by my opinion - the range just isn't enough. This car has plenty of room for extra batteries, they reduced the engine to a 4 cyl, and only gives you a 16 mile range? Thats silly, great video as always! -Chris
Indeed great review, i have a 2014 730d here in the netherlands and waiting for a much bigger battery in the 7 serie. Though i also have my i3 to drive electric.
Motoman, I'm wondering: Say I drive into the city and switch to Full EV mode. What happens to the AC? Does it switch off, since its driven by the motor? Or is it also driven by the battery? Thanks!
You are right , at that price point gas mileage is not an issue I own a 2013 750 lie and I'm happy with the gas mileage is I want more or just to buy a car with good gas mileage I would have gotten something way cheaper
So I'm watching this as I wait for the 530e and I guess what I didn't get from your video is how the car is in just auto e-drive mode. For example, I get that it sucks in gas-only mode and in electric only mode the range is just pathetic....but when you just drive in auto mode and let the car manage the gas/EV usage, is the car good to drive and does it get something like 40mpg combined that way?
DISCLAIMER! With the exception of the range, I would *not* extrapolate my thoughts on the 740e to the 530e, due to the very different size of each car. That said, the 'normal' mode - a combo of EV and gas - works well. It provides almost the same acceleration as a standard 740 however delivers said power differently. Much like that Mercedes E300 I drove over the summer, just not fitting of a car of this stature.
Thanks, appreciate the quick reply. Hopefully you get a 530e soon enough and we get some feedback on that. Probably ordering one soon and really torn between that and the 530i.
The range is between 21 miles to 25 miles for electric mode only according to BMW. www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/7series/sedan/2015/showroom/bmw_edrive.html "What distinguishes it above all is the range in pure electric mode. With 44 to 48 kilometres (41 to 45 kilometres with xDrive), it drives without local emissions and without consuming fuel."
It looks like a beautiful part of the world. I'm very jealous. Nice car though. I hope it works one day putting small petrol engines in big cars. I know what you mean about it not being right, it also must sound a bit soulless without a thumping big engine. A lot 4 cylinders never sound great, especially turbo charged ones, always a bit flat and soulless.
With the current gas price. It is not necessary to get a Hybrid and pure electric car will be a problem for a long trip in North America. The extra cost cannot justify the fuel economy unless the gas price surge. If you like the extra low-end torque, go ahead. That is totally reasonable for a Hybrid Volvo XC90 or something similar.
Stephen Butler I mean Hybrid totally make sense in part of Europe, Japan, etc. But, not make sense for the United States (maybe except California), Saudi Arabia, UAE, Russia, etc. Really depends on your local gas/petrol price.
Kurosu Ha tbh 16miles doent makes sense in Europe. A car of this price the owner isn't bothered about gas, so it doesn't make sense, However, it's this rich folk that pay for the R&D so that 6 so that In 6 years time we will see it in 3 series. So ithas to be good out the box or it's a non starter. And I can't see why "the rich" would buy this over a a bugger petrol, or in EU the big diesel. This car need torque and the 3liter v6 (iirc) diesel is the dogs, and suited perfectly for this car. The issue the openers of this ev is, the effort of plugging it in and nannying the car for 16miles of range, or some, limited torque fill, just isn't right. BMW are historically ahead of the curve when it comes to tech, I think this time what are way, way behind.
Kurosu Ha I wish our prices was like that. Uk it's £1.25litre,for both petrol and diesel. So £4.75 a US gallon, or £5.70 for a UK gallon. Doe anyone know why the 0.75litre diffence between the two. I've never found a credible answer. 3.78 liter vs 4.54litre. Also is litre spelt liter in the US? If so why?
I'm in Alberta Canada. I like and have been waiting for the 740e but 16 miles is pitiful. The EV through transmission is a mistake. Should be ev direct drive with FWD engine and transmission or AWD EV with 2-4 EV motors and an i3 REx like generator. Add a 100 kWh battery keep the 12.5 gallon fuel tank and use a 200+ kW generator engine. 30 minute recharge of the battery for a couple gallons of gasoline 2-4 and you end up with a much better car. Tesla quick 3-4 second 0-60 mph battery lower centre of gravity and the engine helps in winter, it gets cold where I live. I would add a couple inches of headroom, i'm tall, especially in the back seat. Range with 100 kWh battery and direct drive should be in the 200+ mile range. 12 gallon gas tank should allow for 3 to 4 recharges. Range at autobahn speeds would be less but a gas generator would help there too. In the cold, our cold -30C range on EV's is half. A Gas generator helps even more as the battery only holds half the kW's so 3-4 recharges becomes 6-8 and keeps the range up. Snow tires like the Nokian Hakka 8's or 9's give less range but are needed up here. My last car was my excellent BMW 750Li, 2007. 13 mpg city, up to 40 highway. combined i was getting 23.7 mpg with Hakka 8 snow tires. I hated filling up the 22 gallon gas tank. Took forever followed by just as long doing all the windows and lights. Also the wiper fluid had a black plastic filler tube so you never knew how much fluid was in it. It washed the headlights, front windows and night vision sensor everytime you used the washers and frequently ran out. Up here you use washer antifreeze not water, it smells terrible. Road spray in winter is like sand blasting your car with a mixture of slush, salt and sand. The so called new design headlight lens don't work, you need washers or windex and a roll of paper towels. 740e was my hope for a new BMW. Alas it is not going to be so. I'm looking at the Lucid Air if it ever gets built I wonder if it would get headlight washers? I buy used luxury cars. I let someone else pay for depreciation and enjoy driving the best. Seems I won't be buying a 740e. For lesser cars it is cheaper to just rent than buy. I always have the car I need and never worry about maintenance, depreciation, tires, plates, insurance etc... Also the 3.7 kW recharge is terrible, should have a 100-200 kW DCFC and the 2019 i3 7.7/11 kW level 2 recharge. In the cold 2 kW of recharge is used to keep the battery conditioned. that leaves 1.7 kW of charging. 5-8 hours of charging to get 16+ miles of range means the 740e is a compliance car not a real EV or PHEV.
I agree. Its as if they half assed both power plants with a stunted EV and weak engine thinking 2+2 equals 8 when its still just 4. BMW if your going to do it do it right and go all in. All that aside I think BMW styling has gone off the deep end. I havent been drawn to them for over a decade now. This one in particular looks terrible, just ugly. To each their own I guess.
Just get all this e shit out of this type of car. if i want to drive 'eco' i buy a Tesla. BMW 7 drivers give a shit about environment otherwise they would buy a Fiat Panda.
Yes I would happily buy one here in Canada. 16 miles to work, charge at work & drive home on Ev. Only have to use gasoline on weekends driving out of town.

these reviews and SavageGeese. both worth watching. real reviews, real world, no bs
In the US, 16 Miles is too little. In my country, it gets me to work and back. I hardly ever put fuel in it!
Did you not see the do not enter and wrong way signs?
What's more surprising than the lackluster 4 cylinder engine is the missing jacket and pocket square! 😱 great review as always.
They haven't gone anywhere . . . just taking a break . . . :)

On a BMW it stays on because it's a completely electrical climate system that doesn't run off of the accessory drives.
You are right , at that price point gas mileage is not an issue I own a 2013 750 lie and I'm happy with the gas mileage is I want more or just to buy a car with good gas mileage I would have gotten something way cheaper

Just curious how cities like London regulate only electric only driving. How do they know how much emissions you are expelling.
They don't but you get taxed and fined (congestion charge etc.) based on co2 emission's
Are you driving in Manhattan Beach
For parts of the episode.
I miss your red shirt, now you look like you just came from tennis match. Bro, this is BMW 7 you need to wear shirt and tie, remember for next time!

He said all i need to know in the beginning. The slowest 7 ever!
Where can you use legally the full potential of that, or any car for that matter?
I'm from London and I was looking at buying one. The 16 miles of range put me off, would rather buy a tesla or another range rover.
Change how you look at Hyundai right
I'm in Alberta Canada. I like and have been waiting for the 740e but 16 miles is pitiful. The EV through transmission is a mistake. Meh let's talk about the 911 again, I've decided to sell the kid's!
BMW is going to sell like 17 of these things worldwide.
How dare you call the Leaf stupid looking!
So all you can say is that 16 miles is somekind of limitation ? What limitation ? Money?
Bad review. So obsessed about pushing the gas pedal that you didn't tell us anything else about the car.
wtf? if you want to own a 7 series, you don't want the inconvenience of charging and filling up gas as well.
after watching the whole video, This car is piece of shit.

ha
is crap.....

but tesla has shit interior, like really shitty
Voornaam Achternaam panda is a great car, especially the 4x4. A wee mountain goat.
a $100,000 4 cylinder hybrid 7-Series. WTF is this crap. A big Prius pretty much. BMW has lost it's way.
great review aside this thing looks like ass ....
