It was leaking worse than ever and we had to permanently leave the tap off as the cistern was continually flowing. However I followed your tip on making sure the washer is pushed in tight against the inside round tube, which I did with a butter knife, and the problem is solved. Such an important step left off the instructions and other videos I watched. Thank you ever so much.

Best replacement seat washer on youtube. The biggest takeaway from video is to make 100% sure that the seat washer is positioned all the way in to inner circle area else it will continue to leak.

Thanks mate. You tip gave me idea. I ended with discovered a trick: the plastic disk under the seal, it can free rotate and move up/down a bit if you take the washer (what ever it called) off. I found out you don't need to push with tools, but just push the plastic disk against the washer and rotate, then magic, it pushes the washer up and seals the inside, and also makes the washer impossible to flip up (you know what I mean). Once sealed, the disk cannot move up/down.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this video. While my Caroma cistern was a slightly different internal design, the bottom seal was identical. I used a little bit of liquid hand soap to assist with getting the seal in. Has worked a treat. Bunnings sold a pack with this seal and the float valve seal as well so I changed both. Quiet toilet and happy wife. Cheers!

It still leaked a bit after the new washer was seated. Had a 15 minute break, came back and all OK. Tested again with a few flushes, and after 2 minutes or less, no leak. Well done doing your video mate!!!!
Thanks! Aftter watching this I went to the hardware store, grabbed a packet of 6 washers and replaced the first one in a few minutes - no leaks. Did not need petroleum jelly - just washed the old black goo out with a hose before inserting the new seal and then used your butter knife technique. Cheers.

The leaking issue of one of the two toilets started a few months ago and I got a wrong washer while I did not know although it looks fit well. However, due to the product sensitivity, it did not work at all and I nearly gave up, instead prepared to replace the entire toilet system as the outlet valve mechanism itself is no longer available. Because of your detailed explanation to creep in the rubber with butter knife here, I successfully got it fixed. No more water leaking! You have no idea how happy I am and grateful for your kind help. Much appreciated!
Take the seal to Reece (Plumbing) and show to the service guys. They will give you correct one. Sometime they give you another alternative to fix the problem as well.

Thanks dude, having the same problem as you and everybody else about putting a new seat valve on the leaking was worse that the old valve. As you mentioned, this tip is not in any other Caroma fixing video on TH-cam. I thought the importance of the new valve would be to spread out around the hard plastic bit to seal it, but I was actually just pulling the valve out of the middle ring, which is the important bit. :-) Thanks for your video!
Well done!!! I was having a rather "oh no!" hissy fit before I found your video. I just took the old washer off and put the new one on and was wondering why it was still leaking!!! Thanks to your vid I now know that the washer has to be seated right up against the inner rim of the tube. I originally replaced the cistern with one of those new German ones, thinking that would solve the leak. ha! ha!. Now hopefully I have a brand new toilet!!! Thank you so much. After continuing to leak for several weeks after fitting a new washer it has finally stopped. I used a butter knife as you suggested and saw that it was slightly out of alignment. It was not written on the instructions at all and it definitely should be.

This is the best video for fixing caroma toilets, thanks about the tip for the washer, it was driving me insane. I found the best way actually to do the seal is to coat it in ky jelly and water which allows it to slide into that plastic ring properly then using the knife to prod it in place. Two attempts later and presto no more leaking.

Champion! Thanks for posting this video, it’s exactly what people need to learn the little tricks to these kind of jobs. My new seal hadn’t seated properly and I couldn’t work out what the problem was or why it kept leaking. I found that instead of using a knife I just pulled the seal in from the side slowly working around which allowed it to pull in and seat perfectly. Good ol Utube to the rescue again. Stuff like this really does help the world go round!👍🏻
Thanks for all the info. It was easy to disassemble the parts. With a lot of difficulty I managed to slip on the new sealer ring. Then the cictern was leaking more than before. After replacement of the parts 3 times over it dawned on me to put on some lubricant on the sealer. I happened to have some Petroleum Jelly and that did the trick immediately. Probably Vaseline would've worked as well. I now learned that there is something called Plumbers' Cream, a yellowish stuff, which probably works best.
Thanks you so much for the good point you made. I couldn’t get the black hard washer working for me. No matter how hard I try to push it into the centre with the knife. So replace it with the silicone one which is soft and way easier to install and remove. Importantly the white silicone one works for me.
Thanks for your advice. It helped me a lot. What I used was a plastic wedge, which come when I buy plants, where they write the plants price. It was very thin yet strong enough to ensure that the center was pushed up on all edges. One more thing. Since I needed to wait at least 1 week to get the correct sized part, I just flipped the old washer/seal upside down because that side was nice and clean and smooth:- no wear & tear. And it worked perfectly!...xox:)

Hey mate I did what you said. I purchased a new seal. I could not believe the old one was half rotten and it was all black. I managed to put the new one on wasn't the easiest putting new one on. But I had to mess around with the flush part. Pretty sure no water is dripping down the inside bowl. Shows working it out ourselves saves money. I can only see the very slightest of water but it's not pouring down the inside of the bowl compared to before. I'm not sure what else can be done.
Great video, however after a few attempts with different washers I found that the red seat washer was the best to use, it comes with a matt side and shiny side. The installation needs to be installed shiny side up (ie shiny side needs to be the sealing surface against the Cistern) and check that the washer is seated in the centre.
Thankyou....I have spent 2 days (a few minor breakdowns) and contemplating having to phone the plumber!! I replaced the seal that was deteriorated and the new one leaked worse!! I also put some vaseline around the seal and RESULT!!

When i first changed the washer it was still leaking, the caroma washer pack that i bought from bunnings had two types check the size with your existing washer. I then used dishwashing liquid and was able to move the washer into position firmly against the base. This finally worked.
Got some good tips from the clip. Note : I actually found with my very old Caroma flush system I did not need to stretch the black rubber ring off but could unscrew the the plastic end and easily place on the black seal/ ring. I would be interested to see if your model does as well
Thanks for sharing I replaced the float mechanism with a tube which has the float built around it , so it slides up and down shutting the water off at a predetermined setting.. Also available at bunnings for around $20 Cheers
I have an older style duel flush Caroma that had a constant leak. I needed to replace the seating washer. The old washer was so old that I needed to dig it out from the centre area. important to make sure area where new washer sits is clean. Went to Bunnings and sold me third party washers, went home tried several types of washers. Still leaking and I'm going mad with frustration. Went to a specialist plumbing shop with the flushing unit and new washer that didn't work on it and after the young dude tried to sell me a complete new cistern an older guy said I needed to try the authentic Caroma washer (only $5) which looks almost identical to the third party one only a little more shiny. Anyway I tried it and presto it worked perfectly …..amazing the difference.
+lamadas Thanks mate - i'm was going mad too. tried the non genuine overseas junk washers from Bunnings - they didn't work in my case - even after pushing them into the centre of the shaft as suggested in this video - I gave the good old genuine Aussie Caroma washer a go and presto - chalk and cheese - no more leaks - thanks very much
+lamadas Further when I compared the two washers I noticed the first one that failed was a hard white silicon type material - it was slightly thicker and less flexible than the one that worked - the one that worked for me was an orange coloured washer - very thin and much more flexible
I have tried some many times and find out the washer size is not right. I bought some some colored washers from Bunnings and Masters, none of them is big enough to cover the outlet hole. so I am wondering what is the right size for this old cistern and where to get it?

It was, annoying me trying to remove the part that flushes. I thought here we go I'm going to snap it off but messed around. Along with replacing the valve is much better than before

Mine was completely perished when i tried to replace it and thought just chucking a new washer in would sort the issue but i probably didn't be push it in far enough.

I couldn’t get the black hard washer working for me. No matter how hard I try to push it into the centre with the knife. So replace it with the silicone one which is soft and way easier to install and remove. Importantly the white silicone one works for me.

Thanks for your advice. It helped me a lot. What I used was a plastic wedge, which come when I buy plants, where they write the plants price. It was very thin yet strong enough to ensure that the center was pushed up on all edges.
One more thing. Since I needed to wait at least 1 week to get the correct sized part, I just flipped the old washer/seal upside down because that side was nice and clean and smooth:- no wear & tear.
And it worked perfectly!...xox:)

Hey mate I did what you said. I purchased a new seal. I could not believe the old one was half rotten and it was all black. I managed to put the new one on wasn't the easiest putting new one on. But I had to mess around with the flush part. Pretty sure no water is dripping down the inside bowl. Shows working it out ourselves saves money. I can only see the very slightest of water but it's not pouring down the inside of the bowl compared to before. I'm not sure what else can be done.
Great advice on where it needed to be seal. Still struggled getting it sealed. But added some silicone lube which did the trick.
Great video, however after a few attempts with different washers I found that the red seat washer was the best to use, it comes with a matt side and shiny side. The installation needs to be installed shiny side up (ie shiny side needs to be the sealing surface against the Cistern) and check that the washer is seated in the centre.
Thankyou....I have spent 2 days (a few minor breakdowns) and contemplating having to phone the plumber!! I replaced the seal that was deteriorated and the new one leaked worse!! I also put some vaseline around the seal and RESULT!!

When i first changed the washer it was still leaking, the caroma washer pack that i bought from bunnings had two types check the size with your existing washer. I then used dishwashing liquid and was able to move the washer into position firmly against the base. This finally worked.

Got some good tips from the clip. Note : I actually found with my very old Caroma flush system I did not need to stretch the black rubber ring off but could unscrew the the plastic end and easily place on the black seal/ ring. I would be interested to see if your model does as well

I replaced the float mechanism with a tube which has the float built around it , so it slides up and down shutting the water off at a predetermined setting..
Also available at bunnings for around $20

I have an older style duel flush Caroma that had a constant leak. I needed to replace the seating washer. The old washer was so old that I needed to dig it out from the centre area. important to make sure area where new washer sits is clean. Went to Bunnings and sold me third party washers, went home tried several types of washers. Still leaking and I'm going mad with frustration. Went to a specialist plumbing shop with the flushing unit and new washer that didn't work on it and after the young dude tried to sell me a complete new cistern an older guy said I needed to try the authentic Caroma washer (only $5) which looks almost identical to the third party one only a little more shiny. Anyway I tried it and presto it worked perfectly …..amazing the difference.
+lamadas Thanks mate - i'm was going mad too. tried the non genuine overseas junk washers from Bunnings - they didn't work in my case - even after pushing them into the centre of the shaft as suggested in this video - I gave the good old genuine Aussie Caroma washer a go and presto - chalk and cheese - no more leaks - thanks very much
+lamadas Further when I compared the two washers I noticed the first one that failed was a hard white silicon type material - it was slightly thicker and less flexible than the one that worked - the one that worked for me was an orange coloured washer - very thin and much more flexible
I have tried some many times and find out the washer size is not right. I bought some some colored washers from Bunnings and Masters, none of them is big enough to cover the outlet hole. so I am wondering what is the right size for this old cistern and where to get it?

Thank you - that was driving me crazy! I now have a few spares after trying different brands and types (silicon vs EPMD) but at least the leak is now gone.
It was, annoying me trying to remove the part that flushes. I thought here we go I'm going to snap it off but messed around. Along with replacing the valve is much better than before

Mate thanks for this! i replaced the washer but it still leaks like you say... i will check it again and make sure the rubber seal has gone in far enough. Mine was completely perished when i tried to replace it and thought just chucking a new washer in would sort the issue but i probably didn't be push it in far enough.
