    Thanks Conan, this is so useful to see how the pros work. Usually you never get to hear a track before being mixed and after. Your videos are informative, interesting and really inspiring. So the process is: rough level mix, master bus processing, submix processing, then finally individual channels, THEN add reverb+delays. My old way would be to start with kick then get drums mix going then add bass and get that going - doing it that way I am chasing the final sound in just the drums mix and end up going round in circles witih so many half finished tracks on my drive :D Thanks for the enlightenment! :D Also I just switched from Ableton to S1 and am loving it aswell, cheers!

      Hey you're welcome dude. There is no right or wrong way to mix, but this method has served me well for nearly 40 years. I hope that I at least offer an alternative way to look at things. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    This video has been enlightening for me… My productions are purely for my own personal use which leaves plenty of room for complacency, but I have to say that Ive began to apply some of your techniques to my endeavours, with encouraging results! Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!! Mixing and mastering videos can easily have me glazing over pretty quickly, but I’ve take a lot from this one, and it’s something I’ll come back to for reference . Nice work Conan! ( Inflator on the wish list !!)

    Great great tips explained, thank you so much. I saw the trick with mid-compression in Luca Pretolessi video, but he was doing it on a mastering stage, and now I'm very very curious to try it on mixing stage) Also, this AB plugin for references is glorious) I guess I'll be influenced by the structure of your mixing in creating my own production template. Thank you for sharing, I fount a lot of useful stuff for myself

      @@TheCratesMotel 🙏🙏🙏😁 at current stage I’m producing and mixing, these are two different sciences 😁 it’s too much to keep in your head all the production and mixing stuff. So I fount your video very useful for myself because I can built premixing template and actually produce sound there. I know lot of guys are already producing music mix ready, but it takes a huge time, months to go this way, and you’re loosing your creativity. So I fount myself having split between producing and mixings stages. So yeah, thanks again 🙏

    That was great. I'm glad I found your channel. I mix and master Dance and Hip-Hop in Studio One. I just recently transitioned to working half in headphones even though I have a tuned and treated studio. It helps hear the little details which is especially good for mastering and compression. So your channel is inadvertently perfect for me.
    I prefer a distressor in optical mode on bass very similar envelope but the distortion helps it cut. Also instead of FX channels I use busses for FX so you can send the FX to other FX like delays into reverbs.

      Hey thanks for watching man. Yes FX busses can be great. I just really love the workflow on S1. It ticks all the boxes for me at the moment.

    You have a Drum Buss and a Buss for kick, low perc and so on, going in to the Drum Buss, can you explain that please. I’ve never seen routing like that before. Is it to keep the integrity of the levels of the original channels going into the Drum Buss. Thanks. I usually watch your MPC videos, which are great and will now be watching your S1 videos. Thank You.

    • @TheCratesMotel

      Hey buddy. I have the overall drum buss. And then I separate my drums into Kicks, Low Perc (snares, claps, toms), high perc (hats, cymbals, etc) and Percussion which is normally congas, bongos, shakers, etc. I like to have separate busses for each section of the drum frequency, low, low mids, mids, high mids, highs and then as I said, it all goes to the overall drum buss. It's just how I have always mixed really. I tend to think of things in frequency groups rather than individual instruments. I do the same with synths etc. I have hi syns, low syns, pianos, pads, etc occupying different ranges and they have differnt busses and then all go to a main Keys bus. It's a bit difficulat to explain without sitting down next to you and explaining it face to face haha. Thank you for watching.

      @@TheCratesMotel I think I understand, it sounds like it allows for more flexibility in terms of overall control of what frequencies are being effected. Thank you for replying and sharing your many years of experience in pro audio. I use S1 and MPC and really enjoy the professional way of doing things. your channel is great at showing what and why you are doing things that you can only get from someone with loads of professional experience. Thanks again. Studio One is becoming more and more popular and people are hearing about how great it is. Maybe we can get some more S1 videos. Cheers!

      @@Magnetic1908 I have my MPC and S2400 slaved to S1 now, so I will probably be doing some videos using the MPC with S1 in the future.

      @@TheCratesMotel that will be great we definitely need that! I’m still figuring out my work flow with S1 and MPC One. I have the Akai internal MIDI downloaded and now will be trying out network MIDI. Where do I go for mixing inquiries from you? I have some beats I want to shop and will like them to sound professional and mixed with another perspective.

    Hi, great video! Still very new to mixing. My question is, following along and getting to the point where you first check your VU levels. My kick is still spiking the meter full (Volume level is at 0).... Any tips on what to do??

    • @TheCratesMotel
      @TheCratesMotel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching dude. There are a number of ways to go about this to be honest. All are ok and correct. I tend to start checking once I have the rough balance sorted out. Another way is to go through each channel and use the gain to get each channel peaking at around zero and then use the faders to get the balance/mix sounding good. This way your channels will be optimal when going through plugins. However despite all that, with most DAWs being 32bit floating point now, it’s not as important to get everything sitting at 0 so to speak.

    • @TheCratesMotel
      @TheCratesMotel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey buddy, thank you for watching. It is because I use a Presonus Revelator IO24 as an interface when I am doing my tutorials in OBS. It has Fat Channel built into the inputs adn preamps, so it shows up in Studio One when you use them together.
