This is for all the Jewel haters leaving comments on this video. I am a big Neil Young fan, and have been for several years. I have recently hopped on the Jewel train and have learned all about her life. I've listened to a lot of her music (which is beautifully written). Not only is she talented, but she has in fact lived through many hardships and does know about "the people". She was abused by members of her family, she has been homeless, and has been the victim of a neglectful society like the rest of us. This is why she relates to Neil's music. If you listen to what she is saying in this interview, she mentions meeting him and he gave her some good advice.
Michael Dufresne really? I'm not claiming to know anything about her past and that is sad. I do know her and her family have a T.V. show about life up north right now and they seem happy. I guess it's T.V. magic.
Michael Dufresne She is talented but Mangled this tune. I can feel it in the beginning like she is a Junkie begging for it but when screams the Verse it ruined it. She should sing it like a real Junkie if she lived it !
@@silkboxing4454 All musicians don't live what they sing about. They do however get inspiration and feelings just like the rest of us except they perform the songs on their feelings and terms. Sure everyone is not going to like all songs , but how can someone judge a song and and a performer ? Specially when they have not walked in their shoes ? Opinions however are valuable.
I'm two generations older, and still this song has such strong connection to my life. Don't we all have experience in Neil's message? The message hasn't changed. Jewel is talented, and she knows a good song.
My favorite Neil Young song and one of my favorite songs of all time.. I can respect this cover because she made it her own.. Shes an artist guys..What did you expect.. karaoke?
If you love music, you will begin to love all quality music. This is a very unique cover. If you wanna here Neil young's version. Go download it. Two thumb's up for a very great cover.
Generally, if a musician is going to cover another musician's song the musician covering the original needs to make it his/her own. For example, Johnny Cash I believe made "Hurt" his song. I'd say Jewel does the same here.
I can't believe how many dislikes this has... Not many musicians I suppose... This is creativity, you guys wanted her to copy Niel's arrangement... She's an artist not a tracer.
@bwbblookloo I agree, the original is perfect. But you have to ask yourself, how does a female sing it.. would you want to hear an attempt at what came naturally and what worked so well for Neil or something Jewel does well. It's cool if you don't dig it but I think she captures the essence of the song. Which so many people would miss. hmmm
I get that people hate covers of classic songs but it brings the music to a new generation. I don't think this conveyed the pain of Neil's version, but it has more power and whether or not you like Jewel, you cannot deny her talent. Personally, I thought it was great.
Jim B the original could make grown men weep (especally this of us who have lost a friend to drugs) this version is just musical talent and no more, there's no pain, no emotion, she's just singing the words.
seriously guys???? you must not be true Neil fans...do you not like it because it doesnt sound like his song exactly? a cover is supposed to be different...it changes the perspective...i think this version has alot of emotion and her voice is beautiful
If it were any other song it would have been good but this is a song of mourning and her form of singing just doesn't reflect that, in fact many would say that it is disrespectful.
@yeneewSSweeney She used the capo so she could sing it in her key, where Neil sang it in D. I'm pretty sure Neil could have sung this as high as Jewel. This one is a bit over the top. She actually did a nicer version on the Howard Stern show.
Hey, I saw Jewel open for Neil back in the YOTH and I think she does a fine cover. Might not be your cuppa, but she does a credible job IMHO. BTW - she had it pretty rough living in a van with her mom up in Alaska, so she has just a bit of cred for this song.
Jewel is a Goddess of rock,! in I fact worked many shows when she toured & saw her open for Neil many times over, She is unique & talented, if Bob says it's cool, thats law,, but if Bob and Neil say it's cool, it better the any scripture ever written. I saw bob 4/10 11 in hcm vietnam at 70 he still jam's effortlessly.
I like Jewel, but I didn't love that cover. It didn't having the haunting effect that Neil's version has... in my opinion. I don't think she needed to change up the melody as much as she did.
DaveCo777 exactly it doesn't have the haunting sounding behind it but jewel did a beautiful job in her own style singing it softly then raising up for the needle and the damage done line. I understand where your coming from because I'm a huge Alice and chains fan and no one can come close to his emotion in his songs other than Chris Cornell.
Frankly, this reminds me a lot of Lady Day's (Billie Holiday) vocals. She is not replicating Neil, she is adding her voice. Its actually pretty good. I wish there was a longer arrangement.
@terrybriody I read comments to share opinions. What I don't get it is how people are hateful towards a video they could avoid watching. One thing is to dislike the video, the other is to be hateful and curse the singer and her version of a song she enjoys. What I hate is people that come to see this video to, on purpose, throw nasty words about it. Can you see that there's a mild distinction here?
@JeanVe i will try! :) i promise, i have never heard of her untill this and as a neil young fan i dident enjoy this cover. but ill give some of her other songs a listen x
do you guys criticize her because she didn't write the song? she writes most of her music.i guess celine dion could have done a better job- oh, she doesn't write or play any of her songs. she just stands there screaming at the top of her lungs and straining her vocal chords.
Jewel does every song with ecstatic vocals -- very strange to see it called "trying too hard." I don't love her, but it has been her style since she was living in her car.
Hey I'm just checking to see if your still clean... Awesome if you are abd if you are not... Then keep trying and relapse is a part of recovery.. If you're in the ground, im sorry
The guitar part is more or less the same as the original but she changes the melody and phrasing around all over the place. All and all, I dig it though.
yall are crazy she improved the sound of this song by leaps and bounds. when neil young sang it back when he sounds like a dying whale. her vocal range is top notch plus who else in the indutry can play an instrument to back up there voice get real
The lyrics of the song are about both heroin addiction and love addiction. Perhaps the people who think this interpretation is some kind of betrayal of the original are just too obtuse to get it?
Because she's getting trashed left and right not cloning Neil Young's version of the song. I'm not being the critic. I'm questioning whether the criticism comes from the heart. I doubt it.
Roshan Black it lacks the mournful feeling of the original. But let's take a different example Hurt by Nine Inch Nails vs. Jonny Cash's cover, Cash made some alterations to the music, about on the same level as this cover but he kept the mood of the song if he didn't made it deeper.
@bass234 spot on comment bass- agree 100%. Having been drawn here by the fact that she is covering a great song would we not be be remiss if, having discovered how bad her rendition is, we were to leave without comment?
the fuck does 'not the right emotion mean'? she put her own personal emotions into which equalled her spin of it. I thought it was rather interesting not? not unreal but it was cool, per say (in a pretend - like context so pretend with me here) we've never heard the actual song before
I love 90% or more of Jewels stuff. The Pathos comes through but some how this doesn't work. Interesting attempt though. I wish she would have taken Neil and Bob's advice for a longer period. Her body of work, though tremendous, would have probably been even better.
This is a really good cover, Jewel has a great voice. I think it's mean for people to bash talented people's videos, or to write mean comments on anyone's videos... but this comment is really psychotic and immature. Someone should kill his/her self because they don't like a cover? Grow up. It's really creepy to respond in the way you did.
I've always loved Neil singing this song, but OMG, Jewel has somehow improved it, by a long shot. I can't get enough of her and this song.
Moronic.
Wouldn't have thought it was possible for a better version as Neil lived through it. But Jewel brings more passion to it.

I don't think many of the commenters hate her, she just chose the wrong song to sing in this manner.
Michael Dufresne
She is talented but Mangled this tune. I can feel it in the beginning like she is a Junkie begging for it but when screams the Verse it ruined it.
She should sing it like a real Junkie if she lived it !

Really excellent Jewel. The softness behind your voice gives the song a truly personal beautiful feeling on a hard song.
Absolute best rendition ❤
I'm two generations older, and still this song has such strong connection to my life. Don't we all have experience in Neil's message? The message hasn't changed. Jewel is talented, and she knows a good song.
This is an amazing rendition of this song. Love your delivery Jewel!
The passion she puts into her music is breathtaking. What a great hommage to a great Neil Young tune.
jewel is an icon. this cover makes me tear up every time.
Amazing! You people are nuts! She is freaking incredible.
My favorite Neil Young song and one of my favorite songs of all time.. I can respect this cover because she made it her own.. Shes an artist guys..What did you expect.. karaoke?
Thanks Jewel. Spending the evening remembering my past experience.
Amazes me that people dislike this. She's just paying homage to a great song. Not as if she's trying to reinvent it.
THANKS angel standing by!!! 😍 I needed it!
I liked it a lot... She sang with tremendous emotion, and sounded nice.
Awesome version. Screw the jewel haters. She has talent without autotune.
She's awesome, great cover. Luv it. Where can I buy it?
She is unbelievably talented
Great job love her voice You Rocked it. And did you know her family are the people on Alaska the last fronteir. Wicked cool show
This is one of the cover songs that only true musicians can appreciate... Great one!
Totally agreed with you. I play guitar and I really love her version !
I agree also as a musician, she put her on little touch to it and that's difficult to do especially with such an iconic song 🎵 👏
I don't care much for negative comments so I'll just say that some songs are sacred. This is one of them. Leave this one to Neil.
Beautiful ❤
wow to get Bob and Neil to give you advice, amazing.
loved it
good job never seen her in 20 years she is still a wee cutie..good job girl original :)
There is a live version (not Howard Stern version) that is very good. It used to be on TH-cam but was taken off for some reason. It was my favorite!
I loved it !!!

Woah she did a great job making this song her own. Her guitar is very sweet! :)
I can't believe how many dislikes this has... Not many musicians I suppose... This is creativity, you guys wanted her to copy Niel's arrangement... She's an artist not a tracer.
Jhon Dough it's the changing of the mood, the original had a haunting mournfulness that this cover just lacks.
Some thing work. This doesn't. And it's NEIL not NIEL.
Excellent. Typical Jewel. Love it.
I enjoyed this
I don't think you can compare the two versions. Jewel made a beautiful interpretation of the song. Brought a tear to my eye.
@bwbblookloo I agree, the original is perfect. But you have to ask yourself, how does a female sing it.. would you want to hear an attempt at what came naturally and what worked so well for Neil or something Jewel does well.
It's cool if you don't dig it but I think she captures the essence of the song.
Which so many people would miss. hmmm
I think it is amazing!!! This is just her style so don't hate peeps!!! Neil Young is amazing too xx
Her voice, her kindness, that's my drug.
yeaa, love it
I get that people hate covers of classic songs but it brings the music to a new generation.
I agree, Jim.
floored a classic
Finally a cover that isn't an exact copy of the original! Very good.
I love trailer swift, she brings a tear to my eye
why so many dislikes, this is great.
Literal chills.
This is what I couldn't sit and watch this lifestyle that was chosen by the person who I loved deeply.😖 It won over me.
Still a beautifully tragic song. Jewel is magnificent
seriously guys???? you must not be true Neil fans...do you not like it because it doesnt sound like his song exactly? a cover is supposed to be different...it changes the perspective...i think this version has alot of emotion and her voice is beautiful
Beautiful Job, but you need a Winnipeg Canada accent to make it Neil..lol
I love your cover version
233 Thumbs down for an artist that is trying to be herself. Way to go.
she ruined this song
Being yourself doesn't mean you have to totally fuck up a great song.
she massacred this though. jewel is wayyyy better than this.
A Garcia Well, I guess you should cry like a little bitch.
If it were any other song it would have been good but this is a song of mourning and her form of singing just doesn't reflect that, in fact many would say that it is disrespectful.
WORD !
I was gonna post a response reflecting my opinion on this "version", but with everyone else's comments there's really no need. Kudos fellow youtubers.
Jewel’s cover creates a more emotional view of addiction. No less valid.
There is a better version she did live (not the Howard Stern one) that I think is so much better. Can't find it here anymore sadly!
@yeneewSSweeney
She used the capo so she could sing it in her key, where Neil sang it in D. I'm pretty sure Neil could have sung this as high as Jewel. This one is a bit over the top. She actually did a nicer version on the Howard Stern show.

Cool!
@shinnyshinnytinfoil
You may or may not like this rendition but you really should get to know her, she's worth it!

Jewel is not from Canada for one, and two, why would they do this to such an amazing song?
Haters gonna hate.
Band wagoners gonna band wagon.
This cover's fine.
thankyou jewel for makin me love neil young 500 tymes more!!!!
Does any1 know what guitar she is using?
Yes.
Best Neil Young Cover Ever..................
Well, most of us seem to like it, all respect to Neil of course
I agree it doesnt have the feel Neils did. But she is jewel and she wont have that feel. She did it her way and she did good in her own style.
And yes, be yourself Jewel, your beautiful self
she did alright
I like Jewel, but I didn't love that cover. It didn't having the haunting effect that Neil's version has... in my opinion. I don't think she needed to change up the melody as much as she did.

Give her version on Howard Stern a listen, more haunting.

SHES SINGIN WITH THE SPIRIT OF NEIL YOUNG, -ILL GIVE HER THAT ,
What a hell is that!
Can't wait to hear the Evan Airwolf version. I bet it will outstandingly amazing.
I like it. =]
@JeanVe
i will try! :) i promise, i have never heard of her untill this and as a neil young fan i dident enjoy this cover. but ill give some of her other songs a listen x

Ben Keith produced Jewel's album at Neil's studio. They share history. Be kind.
I can't believe some of the comments. Top comments too. I think this is a great cover and I think the negative comments suck.
Jewel does every song with ecstatic vocals -- very strange to see it called "trying too hard." I don't love her, but it has been her style since she was living in her car.
as an exjunkie and lost many. i feel no emotion like youngs
Yes. So true.
Hey I'm just checking to see if your still clean... Awesome if you are abd if you are not... Then keep trying and relapse is a part of recovery.. If you're in the ground, im sorry

Music is a personal journey for me. Why play the critic? Let the heart do the speaking.

Neil Young

@zildjiansabian What the hell does that mean?
what's the deal with the skull necklace and the serpent ring???
Is jewel a devil worshiper?
Because a lot of us prefer the original, that's all...
Neil is dying listening to this
she either whispers or screams
I don't know what the fuck these people are talking about... I am a huge Neil fan and I thought she gave it much justice.
@bass234 spot on comment bass- agree 100%
I guess to play like you've experienced it, you've had to experience it. Not the right emotion but a cover none the less.
the fuck does 'not the right emotion mean'? she put her own personal emotions into which equalled her spin of it. I thought it was rather interesting not? not unreal but it was cool, per say (in a pretend - like context so pretend with me here) we've never heard the actual song before
