Dude was legit gonna cover that keyboard red without hesitation and I'm glad IDW and Sega are willing to show just how serious things can be even in a comic book meant for kids.
IDW's Zavok actually makes me want more Zavok. I wouldn't mind seeing Ian Flynn's Zavok in Sonic Frontiers. It wouldn't make sense, but Knuckles, the sole guardian of Angel Island, shows up for no reason. Why not Zavok?
@@GameApologist Yep. When's the last time we saw Angel island in the games anyway? Aside from Mania, maybe Sonic Generations? I haven't played Chronicles but I assume it was featured there.
@@mistersp3753 Not that it couldn't be done, but what more does Angel Island have to offer? I understand that it houses the Master Emerald and Knuckles, but what could both (island and emerald) provide narratively that isn't a retread? I'll be honest, I'm not that much more interested in the Knuckles clan, what they could possibly pull out of their ass about Chaos or whatever else we've seen so far. Would a mere cameo of the island and emerald suffice? I doubt anyone would go for a storyline on either's destruction, so I'd be curious to know from those who want those elements to return, how they could be used in a new interesting way.
BadGuys showed a lot of people that the problem with Zavok was never that he didn't have anything to work with as a character. Just that he was stuck in mediocre stories that didn't do enough with him. He's great in this.
One thing I love with Ian Flynn writing with Zeena from the Deadly Six was the in the Game she was Sharpening her Nails like a girl. But in the Idw comics she uses her Nails to attack meaning every time she sharpened her nails she was actually preparing for battle.
It's the little details like this that continue my respect for Flynn's writing. With both Sonic and Megan Man, the dude always did his homework quite thoroughly.
I really like Rough and Tumble in this comic, while they're rude, violent and vengeful. they're cute characters in the way they're actually loyal and protective to people they care about, as evident by how they're shocked when Mimic turns on Starline and the way Tumble reacts when he sees Rough hurt.
I unironically love those two idiots so much. Their rhyming shtick is fun, and when they're not up against the main characters who clearly outclass them, they are genuinely capable. Yeah, there's the thing with the T-Rex bot here, but then there's also the fact that, the first thing we learn about them all the way back in Issue 3 of the main comic, before we even see them properly, is that they legit saved the town from Badniks, and were described as _unstoppable_ by the villager trying to warn Sonic about them. It's just... they proceeded to take over said town themselves, afterward.
Never thought I'd find myself emotionally connecting with Zavok and Starline but here we are 😄 Thanks as always for helping make this comic series even more fun Nick 👍
Love the way Ian highlights Zavok's leadership skills. He's clearly experienced at this and manages to win over everyone in the team, even Starline for a brief moment.

You know, I always was interested in Zavok’s portrayal LW. Yeah, everyone calls him a Bowser wannabe or a big brute, but he’s shockingly well-spoken, and isn’t as single-minded when it comes to his goals like the King of Koopas. I think, IDW shows that Zavok and Zeti can be interesting characters when given the right writing.
Any character can be interesting with the right writing, first impressions are everything and Lost world just left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, there was nothing interesting about him at first and that's why everyone writes him off as a wannabe
Yeah people don't give Zavok's portrayal in LW enough credit. He suffered from the writing, but all those traits Ian highlights here (ruthlesness, inteligent and cunning personality, manipulative skills) didn't come out of nowhere. @@imveryangryitsnotbutter Ian did plan to bring Mephiles back in Archie, or atleast he hinted at it. Honestly I’d hope for a middle ground, like Infinite and Mephiles team up type thing like a now unpowered infinite finds Mephiles or like the spirit of Mephiles and does, something like a “deal with the Devil” and gets some level of his power back but like at the cost of something like sharing his body with Mephiles.
I mean, Zavok at least had a *little* to work with: Pretty much everything he has going for him is actually just fleshed out from his first appearance. Infinite, on the other hand, has pretty much nothing going for him: He's a somewhat snarky bloodhound (That doesn't bloodhound with Sonic, oddly) that's mad the *ultimate* *life* *form* beat him easily. Nevermind it's up in the air if his powers were nothing but smoke-and-mirrors or actual powers.
This is exactly why I don’t like it when people call for a character to go away due to hate. If zavok had been removed from play then he would have been off limits to writers the way infinite is, and he never would have been given a chance to be interesting the way he is here.
I've always liked the idea of Zavok but never quite did. Now that he's in the IDW comics, I've come to really enjoy him. I honestly think the biggest problem I have with him and the rest of the 6 is their designs. Pretty sure Nick said this in a previous video but they look like they belong in a Mario game, maybe some kind of rival group to King Koopa himself.
I genuinely enjoy all the new characters introduced in the IDW comics, but Starline is genuinely freaking great. I love his design, like his design is absolutely one of the coolest in the series period to me at least, and his character is very interesting. I’m still waiting for him to be added to Forces Speed Battle like Tangle and Whisper were. I know it’ll never happen, but I would kill for a game starring Tangle and Whisper teaming up to take down a plot by Dr. Starline and possibly the other bad guys from IDW. It could even be it’s own spin-off series. I would kill for that.
thank you for getting me hooked on these videos. I've been getting the Metal Virus Saga Vid in my Recommended and finally decided to watch it... and now here I am.
Gotta say, Starline is fast becoming one of my favorite characters in Sonic. He's already topped a fair number of the classic characters for me. Same with Zavok, which honestly blows my mind. I really really wanna see more of these two
The better the villain, the more compelling the story is. I love how they are written in these comics, and I love how Starline can be another big villain.
Agreed and agreed Mr. Mommabird (lol). For real, I like this series. Gave them time to develop Starline and setup the Deadly Six as actual threats. The world needs some antagonists other than Eggman to make it feel more lived in and world building. Toot Toot my man for the review.
Starline explains in the end of the Neo Metal arc that one of the things he used to help Eggman recover from Mr. Tinker was hypnotherapy so there was some basis for his hypno-glove.
This series makes me wish we get an Alturative Universe where Starline and the Bad Guy ends up staying together. I...know it wouldn't happen. But, man...I liked how they bounced off each other. Also...this comic was when I realized I actually like Zavok and wish he had more to do.
i would really love to have Starline in one of the spin-offs Tangle and Whisper got into one of the mobile games, iirc, this guys is absolutely in the cards i have a very specific headcanon voice for him (not that i'm sure how to describe it oops), and i really wanna see what the official take would be
I love starline he’s just so cool with his gear honestly I kinda wish we could see tails use cool gear like starline but tails only used the sa2 walker and that translator thing from sonic colors
Rough and Tumble were amazing in this especially in the stuff they actually get to do. I love it when villains are taken out of an antagonistic role for a bit. Sure the skunks aren't gonna do much to Sonic and pals but anything else. Well let's just say: When they come around You don't wanna fumble Or else you'll get taken out By *Rough and Tumble*
I do love these two, and them taking down the Rex-bot genuinely was really cool. I also love Starline and Mimic's reaction. Starline: "I am honestly impressed." Mimic: "I am too, and I hate it." Like, Mimic is actually annoyed at the fact that these two _morons_ have managed to genuinely impress him.
I never thought I'd say this (Hell I never WANTED to say this) but IDW Zavok is actually an interesting character. I really like his takes on leadership. While he's not always the nicest to his six and can be manipulative at times, he sees them as powerful assets and would rather keep them around instead of being "needlessly cruel". That's actually quite honourable. What I respect more about this interpretation is that instead of taking a bad character and making different character traits for them, they take Zavok's foundation and build it up from there. Giving him more depth without making him a different character. Good job Ian.
Bro you have no ideas how long I've been waiting for this!!! Love your speed readings and I can't wait for the Imposter syndrome speed reading!!! AND MORE!!!!!
Nice to see you back at this! When this first came out. there were two things that bugged me, both regarding Starline himself. The idea of surpassing Eggman felt too easy to settle on, something that easily could've happened in the Metal Virus saga. On a somewhat contrasting note, his hypnosis ability was a bit of a disappointment from the start. Everything other new ability was inventive and (possibly excluding the tricore) tied to the characters, but that was a common ability thrown in that fails to make sense. That... aside, everything else here was perfect. R*T were good without jokes and brought some in in the free time, Mimic had a chance to directly show how he acts on missions rather than exposition, Zavok reintroduced the Zeti's ruthlessness - every character proved their right to be in the story and then some! It's interesting to think about how beyond escaping prison, only Mimic and Starline got what they wanted, but everyone's roughly back in their prime.
Rough and Tumble did get the cores too, so next time we'll see 'em, they might be able to go head on against major characters such as Sonic or Knuckles.
This series has made two characters shoot up in my rankings. Zavok is now in my top 15 Sonic characters. The dude is crazy cool with how Ian Flynn writes him. That said I just can't help but mention how AMAZING this series has made fucking Vector. I used to just not like him at all, bit he's now in my top 10. Maybe even top 5. It's just insane how well these characters do with a good writer.
one thing that interests me is i think it was confirmed that sega cares so little for the zeti that they gave ian the go ahead to make *new* zeti for the comic series, i cant remember where i read this tho
I swear, this may be me; but omg MIMIC. Everyone he does in BAD GUYS is either a meme or a mood TwT He went from a terrifying murdering octopus that looks like a squid to just...this. (I need more of creepy Mimic ;-; but I do like memey Mimic)
Can we talk about how Starline does not have a platypus tail but bill from the Archie comics did. Wonder if there's some back story to that or maybe he's a duck posing as a platypus. Kinda makes sense though in a deeper point of view as the spurs aren't really part of his body. His only feature is the duck bill.
if there was a Sonic What if it would be cool to see a "What if Starline changed his mind?" in a way that begins to think more deeply the idea of staying as a team and not to disposal them.
Mimic and Zavok find Starline's video diary where he confesses that he's growing genuinely fond of his team, so when they attack the Eggnet Base all goes according to plan and they form a sort of Legion of Doom.
Did anyone else feel like Starline gave off serious Scar vibes from the Lion King? The whole time I was thinking he could seriously break out singing "Be Prepared" and it wouldn't be surprising.
Not quite but he’s around that ball park. I think that he perceives himself to be as cunning as someone like scar but has a hard time maintaining that image to people
As a massive sonic heros fan the way they canonized the level up system makes me all sorts of happy. It's something I never even thought about honestly.
Something really cool about the prison break is that all the guards use Hover Wispons, which while in Forces defeat Badniks no problem, do it by blasting them with strong wind. Essentially, it's a non-lethal way to disarm the prisoners.
I'm pretty sure Starline's new hypnosis ability was added in theSe comics as it plays a part in the Chao Races And Badnik Bases arc by Evan. It was written here first so it wouldn't feel out of nowhere
"it does look like this hability comes out of nowhere" hate to be that guy but actually starline does uses hypnosis when he is treating mr tinker to turn him into eggman again(yeah he fails but its not out of nowhere)
It was great to see the Power core and the Egg Hawk. Ian Flynn will use anything from the games and reintroduce them in his own way. Mimic has a really cool design for sure. Thanks for the Read Nick, I'll definitely be picking this book up.
Starline is based off of wechidna or , if you want his in game name ********** He has wechidna Color palette and there names are both starline And echidnas and platypuses are the only mammals to lay eggs
Something I would like to see if Starline is directly responsible for the next big saga after the Metal Virus Saga (that lasted a year and a half) where in time it’s revealed that some of Sonic’s allies has been replaced imposters (based on secret invasion)
This is awesome and really fleshing out old big red. I thought by his previous portrayal he was just thump on his underlings kinda guy. But this Zav? Way more interesting.
I'mma put reactions in this comment. 2:00 - Actually, I'd imagine that if he was smart enough to remove Starline's password, he was _probably_ smart enough to set it up that that _specific_ password would set off the alarm, so that he could remove a thorn in his side permanently if he tried it. Then again, maybe the rotten Egg's memory is super-good, I dunno. 9:09 - That "You're a _visionary,_ sir." looks quite genuine, tbh! Like Starline is _actually impressed_ by the idea. 18:05 - Okay yeah, that's a nice touch XD 19:19 to 19:29 - Oh...oh no. Now imagine _all of them_ having a Tri-Core... 28:51 - to 28:58 - "Move on from old projects without a second thought"? Does Eggman have ADHD? And yes, that is an honest, legitimate question, because that sounds like how _I_ operate sometimes... Okay, this looks _friggin' cool._ I may have to subscribe to the comic at this rate.
This is the first sonic comic I bought as I very quickly became hyperfixated on Sonic in the past few months, along with Imposter Syndrome. I have to say I adore Dr. Starline as a character, and his meta-esc focus on breaking the pattern cycle of Sega's writing for Sonic.
I love Ian. He continues to improve on so much. Character development moments for freaking Zavok??? I LOVE IT lol
Using the Sonic Heroes power cores definitely tickles my "Heroes was the first sonic game I played" neurons
the ironic thing is some versions beebop and rocksteady actually are a pretty big deal in one story then even killed donatello
i would really love to have Starline in one of the spin-offs
Tangle and Whisper got into one of the mobile games, iirc, this guys is absolutely in the cards
i have a very specific headcanon voice for him (not that i'm sure how to describe it oops), and i really wanna see what the official take would be
wish that this team still exist, it was so much fun seeing them interact especially zavok and rough
I love starline he’s just so cool with his gear honestly I kinda wish we could see tails use cool gear like starline but tails only used the sa2 walker and that translator thing from sonic colors
So many stories
So many awesome moments
So many awesome characters
This is why I love sonic comics
Rough and Tumble were amazing in this especially in the stuff they actually get to do. I love it when villains are taken out of an antagonistic role for a bit. Sure the skunks aren't gonna do much to Sonic and pals but anything else. Well let's just say:
When they come around
You don't wanna fumble
Or else you'll get taken out
By *Rough and Tumble*
I do love these two, and them taking down the Rex-bot genuinely was really cool. I also love Starline and Mimic's reaction.
Starline: "I am honestly impressed."
Mimic: "I am too, and I hate it."
Like, Mimic is actually annoyed at the fact that these two _morons_ have managed to genuinely impress him.
You know, I love Zavok in the IDW comic books. I’m happy how Ian Flynn wrote him and makes Me wants to see more of this guy in the games
1:22 That's not much of a surprise since almost every character in IDW is much better than in their source material.
Just for clarity, Mimic is a cuttlefish, scariest fucking cuttlefish in the universe
Well yeah. A cuddle fish alone is scary enough but when the cuddle fish pulls out a hunting knife im GTFOing as fast as I can.
I mean of course we know that he's not actually a cuttlefish but a mimic cuttlefish sounds like a very interesting creature
Rough and Tumble did get the cores too, so next time we'll see 'em, they might be able to go head on against major characters such as Sonic or Knuckles.
11:28 Mimic? More like Glocktopus
Congratulations on the 103k subscribers nick love the speed reading bro.😉👍
what, didn't know Flynn was writing for the next game. So happy to hear that
one thing that interests me is i think it was confirmed that sega cares so little for the zeti that they gave ian the go ahead to make *new* zeti for the comic series, i cant remember where i read this tho
Try thinking of Zavok's "spiky jaw" as more like being his coat collar and it makes it look a lot better that he has a mouth under it.
I was just done reading Imposter Syndrome #2 an was going to re-read Bad Guys, good timing
Step Up 2: The Streets AND Zavok in the same video?! Wonderful.
This mini-series might be my favorite Sonic comic art so far in IDW. This was so much fun.
I’m catching up on the IDW series and I just wanna say, having your recaps accompany the stories just makes me appreciate this comic even more
I swear, this may be me; but omg MIMIC.
Everyone he does in BAD GUYS is either a meme or a mood TwT
He went from a terrifying murdering octopus that looks like a squid to just...this. (I need more of creepy Mimic ;-; but I do like memey Mimic)
I always believe the Deadly Six could work if it was in the Hands of a Good Writers.
EXACTLY. Same here with Sara (Sonic OVA), Chris Thorndyke and Elise!

Zavok: “Level up…”
God I enjoy Starline so freaking much. I can't wait to see what the future holds for our evil platypus!
I love how Zavok in the IDW comics has a twisted sense of honor.
Literally saw this video the second I got done reading the mini-series.
Sonic characters take some creative liberties. Rouge comes to mind lol
@@gamejitzu Fair enough just weird that other platypus in the series had more defining features and Starline's just over here looking like a duck.
@@GeoffthespiderSpecifically
if there was a Sonic What if it would be cool to see a "What if Starline changed his mind?" in a way that begins to think more deeply the idea of staying as a team and not to disposal them.
Mimic and Zavok find Starline's video diary where he confesses that he's growing genuinely fond of his team, so when they attack the Eggnet Base all goes according to plan and they form a sort of Legion of Doom.
I recently bought all the individual comics, and the whole series is an absolute gem
Love your work and am excited for the Archie content! Loved those books when I was younger. Even the weirder parts!
Is it just me or does the tri-core gem look a lot like those collectables from De Blob?
Something really cool about the prison break is that all the guards use Hover Wispons, which while in Forces defeat Badniks no problem, do it by blasting them with strong wind. Essentially, it's a non-lethal way to disarm the prisoners.
I'm pretty sure Starline's new hypnosis ability was added in theSe comics as it plays a part in the Chao Races And Badnik Bases arc by Evan. It was written here first so it wouldn't feel out of nowhere
Zavok: he will never take you back.
Starline: that's fine-
Zavok: unless he needs someone to fill a spot on his racing team.
Gotta love villain groups with a healthy dynamic
As much as Zavok is still my favorite character, I love how IDW made him much better in the comics than his game counterpart.
And not once did Nick speak through a fan while beating his couch with a pillow.
Awe inspiring amount of restraint right there.
"it does look like this hability comes out of nowhere"
hate to be that guy but actually starline does uses hypnosis when he is treating mr tinker to turn him into eggman again(yeah he fails but its not out of nowhere)
Yes we’re back for this series!
God I love these!
It was great to see the Power core and the Egg Hawk. Ian Flynn will use anything from the games and reintroduce them in his own way. Mimic has a really cool design for sure. Thanks for the Read Nick, I'll definitely be picking this book up.
These Sonic comics are really cool
Oh god dammit.
Zavok is cool.
Regarding Zavok (and the rest of the Zeti), this video reminded me of AL The Boi's "How To Fix:" series.
IDW Zavok is a genuinely good villain, he even inspired Starline not to be a minion but his own villain.
21:50 this is literally me with my friends whenever i have a new joke for them
Starline is based off of wechidna or , if you want his in game name **********
He has wechidna Color palette and there names are both starline
And echidnas and platypuses are the only mammals to lay eggs
The Impostor Syndrome comics are looking really interesting so far, can’t wait to see the conclusion of that!
Something I would like to see if Starline is directly responsible for the next big saga after the Metal Virus Saga (that lasted a year and a half) where in time it’s revealed that some of Sonic’s allies has been replaced imposters (based on secret invasion)
That’s interesting maybe they could have a moment where it turns out that knuckles was an imposter and the real one is at angle island the whole time
The design between the words BAD and GUYS reminds me of the Sonic Heroes symbol for some reason lol
This is awesome and really fleshing out old big red. I thought by his previous portrayal he was just thump on his underlings kinda guy. But this Zav?
Way more interesting.
Yesss you came around! I love IDW Zavok. Frankly I never disliked him but Ian definitely realized the innate potential he has
shout out to eggman's adorable scarf. gotta kill rodents in style
Been excited for your next IDW video, and this was GREAT! Looking forward to seeing more Nick!
18:05 - Okay yeah, that's a nice touch XD
19:19 to 19:29 - Oh...oh no.
BABE WAKE UP NEW SONIC SPEED READING
This is the first sonic comic I bought as I very quickly became hyperfixated on Sonic in the past few months, along with Imposter Syndrome. I have to say I adore Dr. Starline as a character, and his meta-esc focus on breaking the pattern cycle of Sega's writing for Sonic. Can't wait to see how this story continues to play out, thanks for your narration for me to listen to while I do my college work Game Apologist!
Evil Perry does a thing!
Ok so Mimic deleted his profile on the net, but Eggman still knows who he is, so will it even matter.
