Happy to be posting again, got lots of work done in the garden this spring! For the foreseeable future I am aiming to post once a month (unless we have a sponsor), in the hope of focussing on quality over quantity. Weekly posting is no longer sustainable for me, I’m sure you all understand ❤

I am Linda from Australia and I have been watching your videos for a year now and love them. I love how you are so honest with everything and not scared to share your failures. We all have them. Also was so heartened when you revealed your struggle with depression. Thankyou !! Many of us have the same struggle. You are so beautiful inside and out. ❤

    Wonderful to see you again!
Seems that the period of rest has nourished you - nothing in nature can do without some rest, and we are part of nature after all, aren't we.
Here's to a fruitful new growing season!

My Grandmother had a small farm not too far North from you. 2 acres was the average back in the 70s. Some had larger plots of land but the average was 2 acres. One milk cow that was milked every morning. 2 pigs that ate ALL the scraps and in the Fall , filled the SALT BOX for the year. 2 lamb for Christmas and the holidays. And Chickens for eggs and meat. I remember working the fields with her and family. Vinyards draped the whole perimiter of the property , 1000 liters red wine every harvest.Wheat, Potatoes Tomatoes. Padron Peppers, green beans, faba beans ,carrots. Lettuce, Wheat For bread cabbage. Onions.watermelon, Garlic . Oh and CORN, CORN EVERYWHERE. CORN was the staple food for the animals , the tops were cut to feed the cows while they were growing. Water was kept in man made holdings and shared by everyone . HARVEST time everyone help their neighbor and family. Family usually lived next to you , aunts , uncles , cousins. At harvesting ,big baskets of food were eaten by all on the field with blankets and children playing . It was the best time of my life , no running water but we had buckets. After the Wheat was harvested the hay was then stacked onto a large POLE on a wood platform that kept it off the ground like a large FAT GOLD TREE. . My grandfather was killed in the SPANISH CIVIL WAR so my GRANDMOTHER was a one woman band withva little help from neighbors and family... Incredible time on this planet.. I wish you all the happiness and the fruits of your labor. ❤🍷

Glad you are feeling refreshed after the winter break. The power of natures healing, listening to your own needs and doing what feels right for you will benefit all the family. Taking a step back and taking time out and away from the stress of utube was obviously necessary in your priorities so we welcome you back and wish you and all the family health and contentment with your wonderful life in beautiful Portugal.

Glad you are feeling better..thought you got a new husband😂 Didn’t recognize Martin with short hair…agree, not all gardening methods work for everyone..though you have too many projects, here are a few things to consider: save old chicken bedding for compost- very high in nitrogen, gather dead leaves in late fall and bury in your garden trenches- will preserve moisture and provide some nutrients, plant tomatoes up to their necks, but strip all leaves up to their necks first, plant ornamental grasses sound perimeter of your garden- these can grow 10 feet and once dead and dry, use these for straw, and a GREAT plant for bees, if you can get it is African Blue Basil, bees love it, it is edible, grows and bloom til frost..plant in greenhouse to draw pollinators, easy to propagate, just cut off a branch, put in glass of water, wait 10 days, will have develop roots, replant….love the blue chickens😊

Try to cultivate the Buffalo grass or other nomow grass around your garden patch. Overtime, slowly but sure you will see the great benefits. Buffalo grass is drought-resistant and also able to resist the cold. Great journey, wish you all the best!

Wow Lea you are such great worker your green house is beautiful and the sprinkler system will help so much. I see Martin cut his hair. Congratulations on that. with your chickens, you should get some kind of water system in there. I know they have bottles that can drip real big bottles cause there’s not enough water for those poor chickens in the heat. Well you’re doing great great to see you and your family again love from the United States.

Great to see you guys back! The little ones have grown so much! One of the only "PT Farm TH-camrs" I still watch. No super fancy equipment, no huge piggy banks and million-euro incomes. Just simple people living simply, making do and living happily. I find it hilarious how "bigger" channels whine and moan about the smallest of little issues, especially when they have the means to acquire or otherwise have EVERYTHING they could possibly need or hope for. Or, conversely, the gatekeeping and dogmatic thinking from these new-age hippies who cling to regurgitated (often incorrect, or incorrectly applied) information as if it were some bible.
You guys seem like the real deal and I wholeheartedly welcome you and your beautiful family to this little corner of Portugal.
Wishing you guys a cool and pleasant summer, with bountiful harvests :)
Oh - and a quick tip - tomato plants HATE getting their leaves wet!

Thank you so much for this window into your daily life. In Oz we are going into winter and the depression that goes with it. It is the shut down season unlike spring when the warmth brings hope and new life. I love your blue chickens, I've never heard of or seen them before, I too was surprised at their indifference to the cabbage leaves, never mind they'll be perfect for the compost heap. Do you plough your old crops back into the soil? Its wonderful to see your children helping with the gardening, they'll grow up to be knowledgeable and self sufficient in a world where their future is an unknown. That sounds rather morbid but isn't that one of the reasons for your move to Portugal? Anyway thank you again for the vid and the shots of nature that surround you. Love and best wishes from Fran!!🥰💕👍💪👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🐕🐔🐔🐔🌱🌼🌿🥔🥔🥔🍇🍅🍆🫑🥒🥬🧄🧅🫖

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

I feel you on the dread of winter! I think the chickens have different names in different places, but I really like them so far :) Don't till much of the old crop back in, only roots of beans and such. Maybe a little morbid, but definitely realistic in my book. Indeed one of the reasons we left the Netherlands, being under sea level didn't feel right anymore ;)

Don't worry very much about the future. Certainly won't be easy, but the level of absurdity is being so enormous that is helping a lot of people to wake up and take alternative ways to live as you do. I believe that our children will live in a more coherent world than the one we live in now. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

So glad to see you back! Quite agree with your comments about trying different methods of growing, and the way you grow your potatoes is tried and true :) I love Bo's little wheelbarrow, so cute! Look forward to seeing the garden develop over the growing season!

So happy to see that you and the family are well. I look forward to your videos of your daily life and seeing the children grow. It must be difficult to do all the family and gardening tasks along with recording and editing too so I appreciate each episode. Thank you.
