    why do you put the resistor before the led?

      The resistor and LED are in series, so functionally they could go either way. I wasn't thinking about it much at the time, but perhaps one reason to put the LED before the resistor is to make it easier to measure the current by measuring the voltage across the resistor, which is a little easier to do when the resistor touches ground.
