- In the fascinating world of Estonian design, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. With a unique blend of tradition and modernity, Estonian designers have carved a niche for themselves with their Nordic minimalist approach that reflects their deep respect for nature and their forward-thinking mindset.
One such designer making waves in the industry is Reet Aus. She has revolutionized the fashion industry with her science-based production model called UPMADE®. This innovative approach utilizes only pre-consumer leftover fabrics, ensuring that no virgin materials are produced for production. Aus’s collection has even been recognized and awarded the German Ecodesign Award in 2023 in the Product category. Her commitment to circularity and sustainable practices sets an example for the industry.
Another Estonian entity making waves in sustainable design is Myceen. They focus on the development of mushroom mycelium-based materials. These materials are not only carbon-negative but also compostable. By combining mycelium and organic by-products, Myceen creates innovative and eco-friendly materials that can be used in various industries.
Estonia itself is no stranger to innovation. As the birthplace of Skype and known as “The most unicorns per capita in Europe,” Estonia has established itself as a hub for digital success stories. In fact, it is the first country to achieve 100% digital transformation, with efficient digital government services that are recognized worldwide. One notable program is the e-Residency program, which allows individuals from anywhere in the world to become virtual residents of Estonia and access its digital services.
The Estonian approach to design and innovation is truly unique. By blending tradition and modernity, guided by principles of circularity and innovative material design, Estonian designers offer a fresh take on aesthetics. Their commitment to sustainability and digital advancement sets them apart, making them pioneers in the industry.
