Jen, Please know we love you. You are going to be fine. I'm a breast cancer survivor. You be proactive . Demand a biopsy. I am living proof bc i had to insist upon it even though they told me to come back in 6 months to a year to see if it changed. DO it immediately for yourself and your family that loves you. It's probably nothing but you want to have that speedy peace of mind. Love and prayers, Ginger. PS. You have such great videos on eveything.:)

Jen, I was diagnosed with breast cancer 7 years ago. Please make sure you let them know you want a biopsy and don't take "no" for an answer. Everything is probably fine but because of your family's history it will give you peace of mind. Take care of yourself. 🙏🏻❤️

My sisters and my mom all had BRCA1! My mom would never get tested but my middle sister got diagnosed with cancer and we discovered it was BRCA1. My oldest sister also tested positive for it. Since she hadn’t had any cancer and was done having children, she decided to get a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy! She hasn’t had any cancer and my sister with BRCA1 is officially in remission!!!! Even though I tested negative, I still get yearly mammograms and started this year (at age 34)!

Jen, praying for good results on your follow up mammogram. My grandmother on my moms side died of breast cancer when she was only 53. I’m 58 so it’s hard for me to imagine losing my life 5 years ago to something that is so easy to check for now. When my grandmother died there was no such thing as mammograms. She died before I was even born. A couple of years ago I had a suspicious density and had to have an ultrasound. It ended up being nothing but it was very scary with my family history. GET YOUR MAMMOGRAMS LADIES!!!

TY for the reminder - I got mine done at the first of the month! Mine came back all clear, as did the PAP! Also, on that note, I am now less than 25 pounds from my goal weight and that's all thanks to you. I took your talks about weight goals and loss to heart and have really been working on it, so TY for that, too. I have managed to increase my physical activity from 3 hours a week to about 6, because of your bicycle thing, too. Hope you are doing well, and that all come back clear. 🤗

I am high risk for colon cancer due to my family history so I had the genetic testing for colon cancer and also breast cancer. I was in my 20s. I was positive for the gene for colon cancer but not breast cancer. It was a fight but my insurance did end up covering my test eventually. I had to show them my mom's test results, which were also positive. My grandmother was positive as well. The positive result means I had to start getting regular colonoscopies at 25. So I started right away, and they already started finding polyps even though I was so young. I have to colonoscopies every other year, sometimes every year. I'm glad I started young and caught things early. I was glad to get the testing but my doctor says they would have had me start early anyway. But us getting the genetic testing encouraged lots of other relatives to get tested as well. They had no idea you could start having issues so young.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the positive test helped encourage insurance to cover the entire cost of a colonoscopy, which sucks. I still have to pay for a big chunk of it. Definitely talk to your doctor's office f you haven't already and see if the genetic test is worth it and what the outcome might mean for you.

My mom died of breast and ovarian cancer when she was 39. I had suspicious imaging in my 40s, which turned out to be cysts. I had the full panel genetic testing for cancer and my insurance company did cover it due to my history. There was also this formula that they used to calculate a risk percentage of me getting cancer. When they plugged in my data, I was just over the risk percentage. I don't think my insurance company pays for it for everyone. It is a case by case basis. Luckily, I came back negative for all of the know cancer genes. I had prepared myself for bad news and had already decided I would take preventative measures if it was positive.

I had a mass and went and had it tested. The day before my doctor's office had gotten a new cancer genetic test. I think it was for 7 or 12 genes known to have a cancer connection. My mom did the BRCA tests because they were all that was available for her. She was negative but died of breast cancer 9 years ago after a long battle. My test was positive for another gene. That mass wasn't cancer but I was followed by our high risk clinic and a year later they did find a stage 0 mass that I had removed and did radiation. One of my sisters was negative for all of the genes and the other was positive for a gene mutation different than mine. She also goes to the high risk and tried preventative Tamoxafin but stopped because of side effects. I took it for 5 years post radiation and didn't mind it but have a lot of the same side effects already from other meds. I did gain 20lbs when I started taking it and they are not going away even after I stopped. My insurance paid for the test and so did my sisters'.

I have someone close to me who carries the gene for Lynch Syndrome. She goes for frequent screenings according to the treatment plan set up by her genetic counselor. She is actually having a hysterectomy later this week at the age of 31 as part of this treatment plan. While it is not a pleasant thing to deal with, it is good that she was tested and discovered it at a young age so that she can receive all of the extra screenings. Yes, the test is expensive but having the information is so important. I hope everything works out well for you.

Thank you for the reminder on getting your mammograms. Two years ago during my regular mammogram they found I had calcifications that after a biopsy was breast cancer. At that time I did have genetic testing that showed I do not have any genetic predisposition to breast cancer. I wanted to find out for my children. I would recommend getting a biopsy again. I was so lucky to have my cancer caught in the very early stages. Best of luck! Jill

Thank you for talking about breast health, Jen! So important to think about. I am 29 and just had genetic counseling and testing done due to family history of breast cancer (my insurance considered my high risk enough to fully cover it). Luckily, the tests came back negative for any genetic abnormalities related to hereditary cancer, but I was still told that due to family history, I have a significantly higher than average risk of breast cancer, so will start annual mammograms and MRIs at 35. It’s scary but I am so grateful to have a screening plan in place!

I had the genetic testing done. My father passed away from colon cancer at the age of 59. I have had several colonoscopies starting at age 34 (I am now 43) and my dr had mentioned the testing. It obviously is just a guideline for if you are higher at risk. Just because you have certain genes doesn’t mean you are going to get the cancer and just because you don’t have the gene doesn’t mean you can’t get the cancer. I thankfully tested negative for all the different ones they tested for. But that just gave me a little piece of mind to go the full 3 years between screenings instead of the 1-2 years I was doing. Because no one wants to do that prep more then they have too. I went to the consultation with the dr and she told me they would run it through my insurance to see if they would cover it or they had a flat rate of $250 that I could pay. Since I have a high deductible I just went with the $250. I always schedule my mammogram appointment for the following year before I leave the office.

My mom and maternal grandmother had breast cancer. My paternal grandmother had endometrial cancer, and I survived endometrial cancer. I had the BRCA TEST DONE IN 2014. My insurance attempted not to cover it. However, my doctor wrote a letter on my behalf, and all the family history was included with it. My insurance covered it all after that. However, the results were nothing helpful as it basically said I had a slightly higher chance of getting breast cancer then others. I was not impressed.

They should always do 3D imaging first, which are more accurate. My GYN just orders that now from the start, and I don’t get called back again for more images. They found things sooner that needed to be addressed, instead of dragging it out for another two weeks or more. Biopsy’s we’re done immediately then, and results in faster.

I’ve been getting one for about a decade now since I have a family history of cancer, my sister had a mastectomy and my mom had brain cancer and my paternal grandmother had a mastectomy when she was in her 60s. I did the brca genetic testing in 2020 (I have Medicare, for SSDI), and thankfully it came back negative.

Personally I’ve never had the test but my three nieces did because their Mom passed on from Cancer at 50 and their Maternal Grandmother passed of Cancer at 80. The three girls were young, 20-26. The two youngest were able to be given some kind of injections. The oldest didn’t qualify because she was too old. I asked questions but they were still very fragile and didn’t want to continue down the road of prevention. They are my brothers girls. He tried to help but the girls refused to get assistance. It breaks my heart because they qualified for a program that I believe was paid for by the American Cancer Society.

The same thing happened to my mom a few months ago, she got a little aggravated because. they did the more complex mammogram first which is more painful than the regular one then the ultrasound right after at which time the radiologist said it was nothing, she felt maybe they should of done the US first, to avoid charging the insurance and putting her trough the second mammogram. Good luck. She did not need biopsy.

I had the same thing happen to me. They pinpoint the area they are looking at so the pinching is unbelievable. I was bruised for a week. I’ll take it because I would rather them have the info they need. It is also slightly traumatizing, because your waiting after the mammogram and then they come in and say they do want to send you for the ultrasound, so of course your mind goes to the worst thoughts. It was just a dense piece of tissue

Jen Chapin is the hardest working TH-camr I know. I had my first mammogram a few years after I kept getting mastitis, and they didn't know why since I'm not pregnant or breastfeeding. Finally, I found out it was from the infusions I was on that I shouldn't have been put on.

I got my first mammogram at 40 1/2 and had to have a biopsy as a result. Don’t put it off!

I have a friend who has the gene and she decided to do a double mastectomy and now has implants. Her thought was that she saw so many of her aunts die from it she didn’t want to reduce the risk as much as possible.

Been doing mammograms since age 30 due to family history, did genetic testing and found that I’m at no greater risk than the average woman of my age, good news!

My mom had breast cancer, and she got the genetic testing. Hers came back negative, so i didn't have to get the test done.

Jen, I'm sorry you're going through this. I pray God reveals the truth behind your mammogram.
I have two supervisors and a coworker who just went through absolute hell with their breast cancer diagnosis. That is now not detected. My mom, while it's not breast cancer, she had blood cancer. She gets regular blood work every 6 months. Never a blip till 2021. Praise God, her cancer doctor said we will just monitor and not go into treatment. Now, zero no detection of her blood cancer. Because her results are clear. I've seen the results. Nothing is there. My aunt was told a few months ago that she has stage 4 lung cancer. Devastated our family. She spent a month in the hospital, and her biopsy came back, not cancer.
I never will get a mammogram. It doesn't run in my family. If it did, I certainly wouldn't tell them.
This might be a comment you reject. I know you support the medical community. I support the truth in the medical community. I pray your results are negative.

My mom have the test and I didn't show anything so they said that I didn't have to do it, but they know we have a gene. They just don't know which one. It is because my mother, my grandmother, my sister, my mom, and myself. All had breast cancer and my mom. Ian, my sister had uterine going to look into it again. Because that was many years ago.

Hope the spot they found turns out to be nothing serious!
My insurance will not cover BRCA testing despite a long family history of breast and ovarian cancer. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and so we know the specific BRCA gene that played a role in her cancer, but still, the insurance wouldn't cover testing for me and it is not one of the ones tested for in 23 & Me which I did do several years ago. Very frustrating. If I could afford to pay out of pocket, I would.

If your insurance won't pay, you can do an Ancestry DNA or 23&me on your own to check for the BRCA genes. That's what I did 😊

Thank you for getting your mammogram and for reminding your audience to do the same. I know they are not fun but we can catch cancer at Stage 0 with 3D Mammography.
*If you want to learn about your genes and possible mutations, check at the facility where you obtain your mammogram. A lot of breast centers offer testing. Also, 23 & Me offers BRCA gene testing cheap. Just know they test for a lot of conditions so be ready for results.
*Do not wear b/c of the aluminum. It will make you appear to have calcifications. Do wear lotion b/c it will make the mammogram worse in regards to pain.
*. Mammograms are not recommended before that age unless your mother or father had breast cancer before the age of 50. (If your OBGYN or prescribing doctor is more proactive, I believe obtaining your baseline mammogram at 35 can be extremely helpful once your start having regular mammograms at the age of 40. Comparison is everything in mammography.)
*- you will know from the letter and/or report you receive. If other exams are recommended, which are outlined by the ACR, they will be listed.
    * - you will be asked to fill out health information regarding you and your family. A CRA (Calculated Risk Assessment) will be run and it will also be listed in your letter and report. If you have a high enough CRA then recommendations will be listed. Again, these recommendations are set forth by the ACR (American College of Radiology).
Mammography is highly regulated by the FDA through what is called MQSA. Your state also has their input. However, every facility that performs mammography is audited every year by the FDA. It can be extremely intense. So know when exams are recommended, it's not out of the blue.
Know that technology is improving and we are constantly learning, technologists and radiologists. When 3D mammography was first offered, we had our preconceived ideas what it would show, etc. Now, it's over a decade later and we have learned our ideas were small compared to what we know now.
Good luck Jen! You're such an inspiration and I wish your the best!
