Wonderful nostalgic film Thankyou. My uncle had a 525 which I spent many happy hours riding along side of him combining when I was a kid. Great memories happy days! 👍
Fantastic film, spent most of my working life servicing and repairing Massey combines. Worked on most of them from the 788 right through to the Danish made 30 /40 series.
Great video thank you for posting, I remember driving the 500 series of combines, and regarding the dust they were not to bad as the driver was just about above the combine. Around 1967 we purchased a 14ft Ransomes Cavalier, now that machine was a disaster for the driver in dusty conditions, I personally was pleased when after a couple years it was replaced with a Class Senator 80 with a cab.
One of Massey combines in front of the Ransome's combine appear to have a "Woods of Driffield" makers name on the left side rear..........Got to ask, whats the green stuff they are cutting, is it oats grown in nowt but wrangham ?
I think that is what we called " seeds hay", i.e. grass grown for seed. It was a slow job combining it, in about 1973 I was working for a contractor baling the swaths of grass on a large estate that had 8 Ransomes combines, but for cutting the seeds hay they employed a different contractor who provided 6 New Holland combines to help out, all 14 combines were working in the last field they cut together, quite a sight.
Classic combines were you learnt the skills of operating one correctly. Not like today’s operators who know only how to push computer screens. Will Ollie’s Harrison’s Claas still be running in 20years time ?
You're right there Bob, but then again modern combines seem to cope with poor crops better and the skills now seem to be how to use a screen, something I couldn't do as good as a young un!
My father drove a 500 and his mate had a Ransom 901 then a 902 father always said the Ransom’s had a better head for picking up flat corn and feeding the drum.

My Grandfather had a 525, it had a stupid rear beater that always choked with straw, then the horn would go off! Used to crap myself every time!
Imagine the amount of dust the driver of the tail end combine must have swallowed !

I think off memory that is what was mentioned when I spoke to Bill & Ian Alison.

Wow! That lady at the back got skills with all that dust operating heavy machinery and still smiling. Wonder how the ransoms compared to the mf’s

Jean was a resourceful woman, she wrapped wool fleeces combined corn then on Friday night it was the whist drive at Rillington Church Hall!
