Although Tekken 8 is clearly a tier above the rest, we do want to know, which are your personal favorite 3D fighters out there? Let us know here in the comments!
Tekken is my favorite but I still hope the DOA reboot does good for the series. Also plucking hairs out hoping a new bloody roar gets announced some day and honorable mention to X-Men next dimension
Tekken,Smash bros, Arms, Dragonball, Vs Titles. I love fighting games btw. Oh shit throw the old school Sonic fighters on the list lol that's a classic.
Yeah, it's kind of insane that the only reason for Tekken to try and be better is for the fans. If it wasn't ran by people who genuinely love their series, we'd probably getting the most uninspired sequels and hands off approach to support.
Except, the IP is owned by Konami. And they’ve shown very little interest in their IPs outside of Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Though, Bandai Namco might show interest in reviving Naruto: Clash of Ninja (another Eighting creation) if they ever renew the trademark.
@@BortaMaga Except, the latest entry is not favoring so well. And with the Clash of Ninja scene growing in FGC tournaments, Bamco might be interested in bringing it back.
6:54 Actually Soulcalibur 2 was more popular than Tekken 4 at the time both in sales and in the competitive scene, but this is the only instance this ever happened.
@@merdicmagic6171 it's weird people say this when everyone was bitching about Itagaki not being there when him being there wouldn't have changed the result either way. Last Round was the perfect casual game, simple mechanics and lots of ways to RPS and guess your way to victory but at the same time everything you did is rewarded with a cool animation and nobody played it that they had to reinvent the gameplay.
I will die on the hill saying dead or alive could really put up a good fight if the devs took it seriously and actually listened to its playerbase. The game is fun and visually appealing, they just make poor decisions that hold them back. Think back to DOA2 that game still holds up today, now imagine they brought that magic to modern hardware and put some shine on it.
Recently I was at a friends house and we played DOA5LR in tag and a friend of mine who never cared for fighting games fell in love with it and it's now playing it and learning the game. DOA can be really appealing to begginers but the general view of the game has been ruined by people that think the games are just the xtreme series and nothing else (like koei tecmo themselves) It's funny that some people talk shit about DOA cuz of fan service when every other FG has fanservice even MK which has toned it down over the years. Hopefully Koei and team ninja will stop making samurai themed souls likes that look the same and work on a new DOA and a ninja gaiden.
DOA was notable in the time of the infancy of 3d fgs, but after that period when it had actually good contributions and innovations it failed to stand out compared to TK and VF. It seems like it basically has nothing fresh to offer anymore. Even in graphics, where it was a highlight in the earlier games, it can't stand out anymore.
The interactive stages were probably the biggest game changer for DOA amd it was more visually appealing than Tekken. DOA4 was the best out of the franchise. The story lost its flavor after itagaki left
@@carlosaugusto9821DoA2 had a better tag system than SFEX3 and Tekken Tag Tournament. Then the series moved to Xbox exclusively l, moved out of the arcade scene, and then came back to PlayStation (and some arcades) but was riddled with microtrashactions and a newer audience in the FGC that did not car for its hold system and felt the fan service made th game a joke
It's not that Tekken *defeated* or got rid of the other 3D fighting games in some sense -- it just outlasted them. That argument really doesn't make sense; that would be like Street Fighter being so good as to make other 2D fighting games disappear. A rising tide lifts all boats -- there are so many 2D fighting games these days. Time for there to be some more 3D ones too. Bring back Toshinden.
I don't necessarily agree with your analogy, because small boats that are not strong enough can be swept away by too strong sea waves caused by rising waters. That's exactly what happened in the 90s with a lot of small licenses falling into oblivion, and a lot of small and medium-sized video game companies going out of business. who still remembers today (apart from retro gamers) Data East, Toaplan, Irem, sunsoft, taito technos, etc, etc...? Or who remembers licenses such as World Heroes, Martial Champion, Last Blade or Savage Reign and its sequel to name only the most famous ?
tekken did outlast its main competitors though, who all do not have new entries for reasons that have literally nothing to do with tekken. There has been no new vf because most of the development team left sega with yu suzuki. Doa6 came out in 2019, so its not even that old, but anyway, a number of controversial changes to the gameplay coupled with bad monetization, poor marketing and missing features led to doa's self destruction.
@@kumonojuza5583 Exactly, yeahh. I'm a very committed Tekken player, but I love 3D fighting games broadly and I would be elated to get to play a new VF or Soulcalibur or Toshinden or Bloody Roar or DOA (etc) on the side. I think this is a pretty common view.
It's also silly to compare Soulcalibur to Tekken that's like comparing Darkstalkers to Street Fighter for one it's not fair and secondly they're both on the same team.
@@Alexcobra861 And mentioning SF as an example in the 2d scene was very unfortunate, because Capcom had a notable episode of "cannibalism" in the 90s, that is only surpassed by SNK's case. Capcom made Cyberbots, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (not their own franchise but it's their game anyway), Darkstalkers, etc... And everything did poorly in sales and notability except SF and Marvel. Yet we know some of them are very good like DS, so it doesn't have to do with quality. So that reality contradicts the point he wanted to make... The huge difference of notability between SF and the others literally is the reason that they were overshadowed. And all that was inside the same company.
DOA6 and VF5US are still played daily online on PS4. th-cam.com/video/jtQ6TJxgNQ8/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/TsW2-5uX5U4/w-d-xo.html if more cared to purchase these games publishers would care to do more for the series. they follow whatever profits them the most.
VF - Boomers who don't know how to adapt DOA - Gatekept out of mainstream SC - Lack of marketing from publishers in favor of the golden boy Tekken Tekken was lucky
Little mention of DOA, when for well over a decade DOA and Tekken were like the Pepsi and Coke of 3D fighters. DOA's popularity isn't even as small/niche as people think... and inside Japan it was always pretty close with Tekken. The western perspective is always just a discrediting of DOA's presence/history/sales due to not liking its artistic direction. DOA6 flopped, but so did Tekken before rewriting its fate. Where's Soulcalibur and VF? When we explain away these other 3D fighter's disappearance we're always much more charitable in interpreting their shortcomings. When it comes to DOA (which had more success and staying power), we're relentless in describing everything fundamentally wrong with it. Regardless of community sentiment, there's going to be a DOA7 one day. It's not "dead", just had a single poor entry (which still sold better than many of the other fighters people praise).
@@JamesPierro Here's some Reddit reasons: The main reason is it fell well short of internal sales estimates. The Tekken Federation Service or whatever it was had its support cut within a few months of the games launch. If you are a single player or casual Tekken fan the game was a love letter to the series. Tons of content, character endings, all the characters ever. "As others will state it was an extremely complicated game, even by Tekken standards, and now you have to deal with not just one complicated moveset but two, and defend against two." " From what I hear it was that it turned a game in an already niche genre known for its extreme complexity into a game with even more complexity than before. Now you needed to know how to play two characters and figure out how the tags let you interact between each other. Also the combo damage was extraordinarily high." " From a spectator's point of view, it wasn't the most exciting game in the world. Two health bars meant that there were inevitably more times were both players were just poking around in neutral, which arguably is the least interesting part of the game to someone who is only casually watching. Additionally, combos were longer (though I guess this was more of an annoyance as a player) and hits/CH didn't really have much of a visual flare to them, relatively. I always say that T7 is an infinitely better game to watch as a newcomer/casual observer primarily because of the amount of visual flare to added to so many situations in the game. Things like the camera zooms on CH, Screws being more interesting to look at than Bound, and slow-mo all added to T7 being the kind of game someone at a large tournament would glance at and then pause to actually watch a round or two because the action was so interesting." " "No it didn't almost kill the franchise. That's just a stupid theory, but it didn't do well in the market and supposedly made it a bit difficult to develop Tekken 7" "Marketing is the key to success or failure, to me ttt was great, it was still an era were you grinded for the xtra stuff, before dlcs i think its easy to say now that it was a bad game, but when it came out everyone was playng it all day, it was innovative, you had to learn strategy and chemistry to have a good team, many people learned about other characters and its the only tekken game that had everyone for free, something we might never see again. " "There has been a lot of misinformation around TTT2 for the newcomers (T7). I believe this is mainly due to a few big streamers being vocal about not liking the game. A big reason it didnt sell well, was because it was released during the end of PS3 era. Most games that are released during this period, doesn't have good sales. That doesn't necessarily mean the game was bad. Look at Suikoden 2 for example. It counts as a master piece today, but had bad sales due to it being at the end of PS1 era. This is especially true for Tekken due to Tekken 6 already existing on PS3 so for many people it wasnt worth buying TTT2 when PS3 was at the end of its life. Personally, i loved TTT2" "It didn't sell well, it wasn't casual friendly, looked too similar to T6. I remember being a casual who had only messed around with T4/T6 watching the EVO reveal for this game, and honestly I thought it looked whack, never paid much attention to it after that. It also got a bad rep in the spectator/tournament scene because 1: it was just boring to watch for many, and 2: it held up every damn tournament because of how long the sets would be." "Bad marketing. Playing it now, feels it was ahead of it's time." "There was barely any marketing for it and it was too complicated even for a Tekken game. I also think another factor to TTT2 being such a financial failure was that Namco underestimated how much money they would have made at the time if they sold characters as DLC. While it was nice not having to pay for characters in TTT2, it definitely did more harm than good to the franchise." (Not sure I agree with the no DLC argument since clearly that did effect the sales of the first 5 Tekken games (and TTT) which existed during a time DLC had not existed yet. But I do probably agree with poor marketing and toxic combo spam and less casual friendly and maybe streamers and FGC complaining about it.... Plus, remember SFxTekken console DLC fiasco? Yeah
The back and forth between VF and Tekken is fascinating, I feel one of the reasons VF fell out of public perception was how Sega never ported VF3 to the Saturn, even if they had to scale back the visuals, had they done it and with enough features like Ending videos for arcade mode and extra modes (VF2 on Saturn had a good amount) it could have helped maintain the series in the spotlight, when VF3 got ported on the Dreamcast it got overshadowed by SoulCalibur. However on the PS2, VF4 and VF4 Evo were excellent games, Quest mode on VF4 Evo gave that game tons of replay value and had lots of unlockables. I played the Japanese version back then, there were VF1 models to unlock, loads of customization items, VF4's original stages with soundtracks, combo videos and extra tournaments with different rules to mix it up. I see Tekken 8's Arcade Quest as their late response to VF4's Quest mode. Sega could absolutely make VF6 compete with Tekken, but it would be quite the undertaking since Tekken consolidated itself over the years with a good balance between competitive play and casual appeal. A new VF on consoles would need A LOT, we're talking single-player offerings such as giving background story on the characters to make them more relatable, character specific endings in an Arcade ladder like mode, possibly a Story mode, bring back Quest mode and good training modes and guides like VF4 Evo had to help players get over the learning curve which is more steep in VF. They have a lot of the framework for all this from previous titles, if they re-visit and think about what works and how can they improve upon it, I'm sure they could deliver an amazing experience with enough appeal to go toe-to-toe with Tekken.
It's impossible to compete with TK. Just releasing a "good game", that looks and plays alright, is far from enough to truly challenge the superpower that TK became. The game is practically a monopolist... in the sense that it's not that the competition literally doesn't exist, as we know VF and DOA are alive and got recent releases, but they are incredibly below TK and in practice don't count anymore. A true competition in the 3d scene existed in the 90s and part of the 00s but not anymore. It's not just like SF is the most famous 2d fg... It's very different from that, because the competition in 2d still is respectable and just underperforms in sales and/or global notability. But VF and DOA really became forgettable and miserable. For different reasons both franchises seem like they stopped trying to compete. That visible feel doesn't exist in the 2d scene... The games are trying their best, and some actually surpass SF in some aspects. So that's how the 3d scene feels different and TK dominates in a different sense and level than SF in 2d.
@@carlosaugusto9821 It's not impossible. DOA5's sales were very competitive with Tekken Tag 2, for example. Tekken 7 exploded in popularity literally just because of armor, EX, and super moves. VF sales could keep up with the right presentation and content.
After VF disapeared, DOA was the only real competitor to Tekken since SoulCalibur is also a Namco IP. DOA5 was actually quite successfull and did a few many things better then Tekken like graphics (not art design), In game Frame Data and interactive stages. DOA5 even had "Rage Arts" before Tekken 7. Well DOA6 is kinda trash tho.
DOA6 got fcked up by some horny presenters… like really hard. That game actually sold better than expected. Well. Until someone had to short of some camasutra stuff for 18 whole minutes. 😂
Tekken 8 will be the 1st Tekken game I really try to get into. Virtua Fighter will always be my favorite 3D fighter, and I really hope to see another entry in the future.
I love Virtua Fighter as a kid and I still love it until this day. Dead or Alive is amazing and I hope that Virtua Fighter will come back same goes for Dead or Alive. I really want a crossover between Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Tekken and Dead or Alive that would be fantastic.
Virtua Fighter is the only series that has a chance, I think, but if they were going for a comeback this year, I feel like we would've already known about it. Next SoulCalibur has a chance to be huge as well, but that's not exactly competition.
Soul Caliber is a 3D weapons based fighter. It's rivalry cousins were Star Gladiator by Capcom and Battle Arena Toshinden by Takara. Those games are beyond dead. Of course there was also Mace the Dark Age, Bushido Blade/Kengo, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Deadliest Warrior and Sony's Cardinal Syn but those are even deader than dead.
"Can Anything Compete With Tekken?" DOA Wins: gameplay Wise DOA Loses: Fanbase Wise END (You're welcome to hate doa , but just so ya know, 99% of tekken players didn't even play DOA, So they don't have any right to criticize its gameplay..., if you have played both , then you can... Also, since tekken 8 used so many elements of doa, you just (JUST) Can't come , say: doa is not worth of my time as fighting game player...since even harada used doa elements in his game from time to time)
Honestly DOA has some of the most satisfying gameplay in any fighting game out there It's one fo those game where you are constantly making decisions and every round can be super hype even at a low level And let's not forget that pre 6 the games had a tag mode included with the ability to have 4 players in a match
@@dandanny2036 this is mind blowing, even freaking Harada acknowledge DOA, And i can't believe there are some players out there , that says: no i forgot this game even exist lol........then you are fool that forget this game even exist. i just can't take it, doa has one of coolest roster ever(i mean look at tekken, asuka is most popular female character in tekken, and she doesn't even put a candle against kasumi, ayane and ... when it comes to lore and .... or hayabusa is enough word to put any male character in fighting games to shame. also doa as you said is one of most complex mind gaming ever. i mean there are so many (MANY) People says: yeah doa 6 sucks ,.... but same doa 6 still brought me the most exciting moments in my entire video game and fighting games experience since doa is mostly about mind gaming, you constantly is changing plan, and strategy to not being read by your opponent, doa's stages is mind blowing, just look at tekken, trying its hardest to do something that doa done in 1999(if i am right) or bring Throw mechanic or wall mechanic from doa into tekken 8. come on,.....is tekken community is that much blind?! ok i played both, and i enjoyed both,......and i say it out loud, tekken got huge fans and so many players over doa......but doa's core gameplay is so much Open, so much vary that every matches(even with same player you played before, and even with same character) feels different (also yeah, suck to fighting games, doa has best tag mechanic in entire fighting games......also doa dimmentions was first game(in 2010) which broght frame data, and also was about retelling their 4 first game story mode in an cinematic ways and tones of new tag mechanics(something that mk9 copy it exactly 1 year later, and everyone was like: oh netherrealm brought some new lyers to fighting games genre....damn this community which ignore doa that much)
I like to think that Tekken 8 released in such an excellent state as it did due Namco knowing that VF6 was in production and they really had to deliver with a product that would be supported for years on end - We can't confirm anything but Sega was satisfied with how VF5 Ultimate Showdown did so they likely got the go-ahead to make VF6. This is definitely wishful thinking but I consider the Tekken and Virtua Fighter rivalry to be perhaps the greatest in gaming and one that really benefitted consumers as each side tried to outdo each other.
I'm looking forward to Tekken 8, but would love to have a new Soul Calibur or DOA--those were my favorites 3D fighters. I'd love a new VF as well, I enjoyed VF5US for the brief time I played on PSN. I'd love to have a new 3D IP as well, though. I wish some indie developers would put their hats in the ring and try to create one.
I sincerely hope the other 3D franchises can come back in a meaningful way. As someone who started with Tekken, I'm glad it finally got it's due. But Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, and Bloody Roar also deserve they're time in the limelight
Neither was Tekken the 1st 3D Fighter(that goes to VF) nor did it output the BEST 3D Fighting Game Ever(that was and still is the very 1st SoulCalibur) and yet it crushed it's competitors..... *I will NEVER understand that*
Started out on Virtual Fighter and stuck with the Sega Fighters in the 3D genre. Had the Tekken games on the PS1 but was never really enamoured with them. I ended up adopting DoA as my as my core franchise in the end which I still play today. If I’m honest I’m an old school 2D King of Fighters and Street Fighter kid. I played the Tekken 8 demo on the PS5 but I’m back playing DoA6 on the Xbox. My goto game is still Capcom vs SNK Millennium Fight 2000 though, so make of my opinion what you will. 🙂
What I've always liked about Tekken is how intuitive its control system is. While it has the highest ceiling of any fighting game to master, it was always easy to pick up and play casually. By comparison, when I attempted to get into VF5, the commands for moves felt odd and unintuitive. There are too many moves that require pressing all three buttons combined with directional inputs which made the commands feel arbitrary and difficult to memorize.
I find VF just as intuitive as Tekken. The commands for VF are mainly P+K, G+P, G+K, and P+K+G, pretty easy to memorize especially if you play Tekken that also has multi input commands that are similar so I don't really see how VF is any less intuitive than Tekken.
The actual reason VF disappeared is probably because Sega didn’t know what to even do with the series. VF5 made money hand over fist in arcades, but I don’t think it is a coincidence that the support stopped well into the Sega Sammy merger. VF never even stopped being bad. Final Showdown is actually great. Sega has been thinking about resurrecting the series properly too with new releases plus one of the executives commenting on the series and how they’re trying to adapt it to the current market
As someone who is proficient with any game in general, tekken is now at the pinnacle of fighting games. Not just 2d. Your investment at tekken usually carry on to the next installment making it more worth it
Virtua Fighter needs to return! vf6 needs to be on the same level of Tekken 8. give it an in-depth story mode! DoA7 should happen as well. Now as for capcom - i'd say Power Stone could give Tekken some competition, even though it's a 3D Arena Fighter. there's lots of potential to give Tekken some competition in this new era of fighting games.
You must be too eager about that matter of expanding the genre but the reality is that it's impossible to truly rival TK right now. It's been dominating the scene for too long now and it's name became too powerful. One thing is release a new game, which is easy... In the 90s there were dozens of 3d fgs... But another different thing is create a solid rival. That status is only for a few... Literally two: VF and DOA. (Soul Edge and Calibur don't count here)
There're no more virtua fighter players , they've died of old age at this point and DoA is not taken seriously by anyone it's just seen as a coomer game
There's stuff in this new Tekken that Virtua Fighter 4 had that is now implemented with Tekken 8: the Ghost Fighter feature. Tekken didn't reigh ahead of Virtua Fighter like this video suggests, it's just vastly more popular I give a ton of credit to Tekken for it being the dominant 3d fighter for the fact it has a wider appeal to more people, but in terms of the actual gameplay, Tekken is a lake to the ocean that VF is in terms of systimic depth
@@stranded_ninjagaming5215oh here we go with virtua fighter rps is deeper than tekken bs😂😂 I'm so tired of hearing this.. If vf was so much deeper, where is it now? Where's all the tourneys? Where's all the player base now? People still play smash melee at tourneys, vf is rarely even mentioned.. Just stop.
@@WavyJayZ did you watch EVO Japan? They made it a main tournament game. The difference is that there's actually consistency with the system and Tekken is a more character based game with not everyone having access to the same advantages. For example, not every character can KBD like that. Let's also stop by saying that VF is just RPS when both characters have access to the same thing system wise. It's all a matter of personal expression. Let's also agree that both games have very high skill ceilings for the entire genre

Anything can compete with Tekken, IF they release new games first, of course. I personally find DoA prior to 5 better than Tekken in all aspects: speed, mobility, less bureaucracy to do things... It's a shame that DoA fall into the trap of fast cheap sells based on sex. No on VF, if SEGA grows balls an put some of their Like a Dragon money on VF and release a VF6, with the SF6 treatment, properly modernized gameplay and audio, Tekken would have some real competition.
Sadly, saying Tekken is the best 3D Fighting Game is well, not exactly a great trophy. Dead or Alive 6 was never finished and hardly a sequel Soul Calibur 6 got one of the worst online netcodes, and almost hardly as DoA to have a 7 too And Virtua Fighter 5 being an Arcade/Console game... clearly talking about their situation So, congratulations Tekken... "you win" :( P.d.: Don't make me say Bloody Roars
You're absolutely right Hopefully tekken 8 and this new generation of Fighting Games inspires companies to actually give devs time and money to develop new 3D Fighting games as for DOA 6 there is a community mod named DOA6++ which makes the gameplay and mechanics similar to previous games eliminating meter and other gimmicks from 6 too bad you still have to play with DOA 6 netcode
This vid is interesting, but like many evo fgc related vids, there is quite a bit of misinformation. Tekken never exactly dominated for 30 years, its alot less than that. Because in Japan to this day, Virtua Fighter and it's gameplay, is categorised as the standard for 3d fighting games, and competitive play. Tekken started to dominate around the time, when VF5 was released, and worse, when sega stayed silent on Virtua Fighter for over a decade, due to almost being bankrupt. And of course, the nerfs and removal of mamy moves and attacks in later VF games, moreso in the VF4 series and worse in VF5 Final Showdown, which caused them to lose, close to 80% of their playerbase. And sega and VF fans, growing lack of confidence in sega for many years. Another thing, it is kind of strange, that people especially people from the Evo fgc come up with this strange, yet odd assumption, that Tekken has no competition, yet Harada himself has said numerous times, that fighting games are still playing catch up to Virtua Fighter. So what does reality tell us? Lol!
A third Rival Schools never happened because all Capcom cares about is what franchises milks the most money. That’s why Batsu Ichimonji (who could’ve been Capcom's answer to Jin Kazama) sometimes makes guest crossover appearances only.
I played a ton of Virtua Fighter 2 in the arcades. It was a lot of fun. I also was a Sega Saturn owner so I played Vitrua Fighter a lot. My friends and I really liked it. Tekken is still my favorite 3d fighter though.
Not now, or since the 2010s, but in the 90s and part of the 00s there was a decent competition from the technical standards of VF and DOA. (Not counting SC here)
There are many 2D fighters to choose from but at this moment there is no current gen 3d fighter that can compete with Tekken. I do hope Soul Calibur, DOA and VF make their return to the genre soon.
They are not dead either... just didn't get a new PS5 release. But all them have a PS4 release. You say "return to the genre" making it sound like they were dead for years, like the latest version of all these games aren't actually more recent than TK7.
@@carlosaugusto9821 You're right there's still time for them to announce something for current gen but no 3d fighter from last gen came close to competing with Tekken 7.
Dead or alive 2 3 and 4 are easily better than any tekken that came out at those time periods but being the best fighter and most popular fighter are to different things
Man, this video along with the comment section got me reminiscing on the good ol’ days. I remember when I first played Bloody Roar on a demo for PS1 the eventually bought it. I would also love to see another Fighting EX Layer come out as well.
I think 3D fighting games is in a weird spot, the already existing IP's that can go into that niche developers dont seem all that keen on bringing back. VF could 100% make a come back if Sega was to also have Like a Dragon guest characters would set it up for a good return with casual's. VF returning with a good game, net code and pro tour behind it would also bring in some really big names in the competitive FG scene that were VF players back in the day which would help it within the FGC viewership wise and people likely willing to try it
"Seiji: I feel like fighting games are becoming too complicated these days. I have some doubts about this trend of creating an over-complicated system and then trying to patch that up later with ease-of-entry mechanics. Regarding that aspect, I think the battle mechanics in Virtua Fighter are really simple and easy to understand. This is a design philosophy I’d like to maintain in future titles in the series." this interview answer alone made me yearn for another VF rather than being scared about it. Seiji aoki showed more understanding of fighting games in that paragraph than the tekken team demonstrated in the past near 20 years.
I think we all can agree that, Tekken has it all reputable whether you liked the outcome of the story of not, if both the overall lore, character executions and gameplay comes great, it’s a good sign that your game can score a 9/10 and above. Past games outside Tekken like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter sadly faltered on many departments, but the added reason why Tekken is loved its because it’s super diverse, also not to mention this is the game where soft-core/ eye candy female characters are in, none of Street Fighter and KoF had that emphasis to begin with (mods don’t count but you get my point on customizations) hence when it’s catered by many, chances are it’s a good game. Tekken is pretty much the Fire Emblem of fighting games, and it’s no question why it’s liked by many once you dive deep further.
I liked how Tekken tried different things despite its horrid story. Like how T6 did something similar to a Beat Em’ Up in story mode, and how T7 added super moves to the formula. Now we have T8 that added Heat. It’s evolving properly rather than just rehashing the same game like others do.
I wish that there were other big 3d fighters on the market for the simple reason that it would bring more diversity in design ideas and game mechanics. When you look at 2d fighters they each clearly have their own conventions and mechanics, to the point where we can point out subgenres. Meanwhile 3d fighters are dominated by one game and offer little in terms of variety.
Doesn't exist yet, it's a Shinobi remake that was announced by SEGA alongside their other remakes at Evo Japan. Original Shinobi games are quite fun though if you're into retro platformers/action games.
Funny enough i loved all the 3d fighters growing up but tekken was always the most interesting. I just hope they bring some vf chars to tekken. In Tekken i play Jin and Leo which are like the 2 halves of the most intimidating fighting game character AKIRA
Idk why tf Akira has never been in tekken. It literally makes no sense.. They added 2d characters seamlessly, but yall just gonna leave all those prime 3d characters out? Cmon Murray and Harada.
It would be cool to have another 3D game that could compete on an equal footing with Tekken, but for that to happen it would have to be a very big game to achieve this feat.
I prefer VF and DoA to Tekken (but I will happily play Tekken). VF and DoA have never had the take-off like Tekken did in Europe and the US. Sony tapped into the rave scene in Europe, Playstation pads were at clubs and so on. Also, I feel Tekken was seen as a lot more flashy. DoA was never given the respect it deserves in the West. IGN and others can only talk about physics (it's like a 30+-year-old franchise and all of them at like 12-year-olds that have never seen boobs before 😪). I hope both games can make a comeback (sadly, I feel one of them will - VF). If both games don't make a comeback then we will only have Tekken (and I question whether that is a real 3-D fighting compared to VF, DoA and Soul Calibre, also Tekken’s sidestep is a myth, it doesn't exist 😂).
In quality it isn't possible as well. Both VF and DOA are decadent for a long time, so they need a good rework and refinement to get close to the level of modern refinement of TK. Even though the series wasn't in the best shape for the development of TK7 it isn't compable to the state of the others.
Another obstacle is that, very unlike Bandai Namco, the companies of VF and DOA don't have a huge confidence in these franchises anymore like in the 90s and 00s. So they wouldn't get a decent funding for sequels anyways. So I believe a new VF probably wouldn't look like a modern Like A Dragon game in technical standards. That happens even in bigger companies and bigger franchises. Like SF games since 4 don't match the technical standards of Capcom's top tier projects like DMC, RE, etc. So even for SF Capcom isn't willing to give a lot.
Sega killed themselves by making a game ahead of it's time. Even now if you load up VF5, graphically it holds up against today's efforts. But the cost of the board meant a lot of arcades couldn't afford to carry it and players couldn't afford to play it. In fighting games the one with the widest player base wins, always.
I hope this changes with the release of all the fighters in the last 8 months. Personally, I’d love to see an indie throwback title that harkens to the sf alpha/dark stalkers era (a stripped down but still modern sprite based fighter would be awesome),or a new soul caliber.
Virtua Fighter is the only one with a chance. They just have to widen that barrier of entry. Some ppl just want to have fun and not care about frames or perfect inputs.
DOA too, but they need to rethink their main appeal, sex, and focus on the excellent and fast gameplay they have instead. Just for clarification, I don't have a problem with half naked chicks, I play on PC, and I use mods like the one that got Capcom hunting modders asses. That said, the vanilla game focus should be always gameplay first, cheap stuff later.
The VF barrier of entry is already extremely low. There are only 2 attack buttons and everything chains. It's one of the easiest games to get into. It's the ceiling that's high.
Virtua Fighter doesn't have as high a barrier of entry. That's a whole myth. It's easier to pick up and play because to even be a novice Tekken player requires you to learn the movement, punish windows and just how well can you defend the mix-ups
Sorry, you seem like the wishful type but that idea of solution is a very naive thinking. It's impossible for VF to become a rival once again. It has too much to do, including stuff that is foreign to the franchise and the makers, and Sega isn't interested anymore in funding that revival. VF has no much value, and that is proven by the fact that it never went further from VF5, that is a 00s game. A "modern" VF that hopes to be a rival has to be much more than a new game with good graphics and good gameplay. And it happens that VF is used to offer nothing but that, the makers are used to care only about that, because they have an arcade fg mentality.
Know Tekken is the most popular overall and I'm absolutely loving Tekken 8. But my personal favourites are DOA and Soul Calibur. But the first 3D fighter I ever played was the very first Virtua Fighter at the arcades. Tekken 2 was the only Tekken that I was super passionate about. Tekken 8 for me has finally ignited that same excitement again. But I get excited for every single DOA and Soul Calibur. Maybe Tekken is "better" but it's not my favourite.
DOA did at one point, DOA3/4 are my favorite DOA games, i didn't like t4 so i went to DOA3 then played 4 but then came back when T6 released as my main fighting game. DoA after 4 just become boring bad went down hill. Played doa6 like 30 mins and then never went back. I hope they make DOA great again like it was during DOA3/4 era. Right now no one can beat Tekken and Tekken 8 is looking more amazing and probably the best tekken game after t3/Tag1. Oh and i never liked or cared about VF. It was just boring to me since the beginning. Tekken 3 is still my favorite game, lets see if Tekken 8 changes that. These are my top 10 currently. 1. T3/tag 2. T7 3. DOA3/4 4. T6/tag2 5. KOF2000/2001 6. Double Dragon 7. KOF XI 8. SF2CE/SF4 9. KOF99 10. KOF MI 1/2.
You really need to do some research before making random ass claims and burying the reality. SC2 was once more popular and DOA doesn't deserve to be shafted to this extent.
One thing is a game's release... For the older guys who know, the 90s had a huge number of different 3d fgs... But another thing is create a solid rival to TK, and that was a quality of only VF and DOA (early).
Unfortunately, Tekken 3 defeated Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive self destructed, and it's closest competition Soul Calibur is owned by Badai Namco. They reduced the funding for Soul Calibur, stole their best mechanics and used it to create Tekken 8. That heat mode that separates Tekken 8 from it's peers is a derivative of Soul Calibur's Soul Charge. They even stole the moves from Yoshimitsu in Sc6. Tekken 8 not having competition is not a coincidence. They made it so! I have and will always love Tekken but there is no doubt that their monopoly was engineered.
Tekken 3&4 will always be my fav in the series. 4 was completely sloppy and sluggish on two player mode but on single player it takes the cake, i love the mechancics, atmosphere, and character models of the game. The only thing T5 did better was sweaten up the gameplay a whole lot and add more characters which is a plus
I would love to see a brand new , high quality, original triple A 3D fighting game IP to hit the market. Something like Tekken, Virtua fighter or Dead or alive, but with its own unique touches. The chances of this happening nowadays are next to impossible , but it would be cool to see . Until then , I'd love to see new DOA , Bloody roar and Virtua fighter games- Tekken (as much as I love it ) , shouldn't have the 3D fighting game market all to itself.
seems like virtua fighter could only return if they gain alot of money to compete with the strength of tekken but yea its definitely bad... tekken has no proper competition and so the devs can afford to get lazy in their ways
personally I'd like to see the 3D games crossover. Tekken X DOA or Namco vs SEGA (Virtual Fighter + Tekken) would be epic. Or at the very least we should get Kazuma Kiryu as a guest character Ffs!
my wishlist of 3D fighting games announcements in 2024 and beyond: SoulCalibur VII Bloody Roar V Virtua Fighter 6 Virtua Fighter Vs Tekken Rival Schools 3 Kensei 2 Fighting Layer (the original 1998) Tenth Degree (cancelled game made by ex-Capcom devs)
On the topic, it's shocking that 2D games gets Indie games, new IP's and licensed games, and 3D games gets nothing. Look at something like Super DBZ and tell me that isn't promising. I'm not a Naruro fan but the way the characters does CQC in that seems built for something close-range and fast like DoA.
I wanna see more 3D fighters outside Tekken. You see all of these anime fighters and there all just arena fighters. Instead of Storm give us a new Naruto clash of ninja
Great video but if u are pushing the channel as a FGC channel, it's really unfortunate to completely leave out competitor games like Dead or Alive, which competed fairly well with Tekken for years
Although Tekken 8 is clearly a tier above the rest, we do want to know, which are your personal favorite 3D fighters out there? Let us know here in the comments!
Doa will always be my favorite 3d fighter
DOA 6, V.F. 5 final showdown, & soul calibur 2
I like both Tekken and VF franchises. Hopefully VF will make a great comeback
As a hardcore Tekken player... it is a net-negative to for Tekken to not have any competition in the 3D space
Yeah, it's kind of insane that the only reason for Tekken to try and be better is for the fans. If it wasn't ran by people who genuinely love their series, we'd probably getting the most uninspired sequels and hands off approach to support.
@@TheRadioSquare 1000%. God bless Harada and Murray

Yeah, Still hoping for VF6
Well the recent re release of VF was just that, and its f2p failure seems to have solidified to namco that they are (mostly) on the right track
BLOODY ROAR has HUGE potential. I think if it was brought back properly it could give tekken a run for its money and hype up 3d fighters even more.
@@CarbyGuuGuu Hey money talks and going by the comments a lot of people want to see Bloody Roar make a return including me.
I doubt it tbh, the Storm games are now considered as the definitive Naruto fighting game
@@BortaMaga Except, the latest entry is not favoring so well. And with the Clash of Ninja scene growing in FGC tournaments, Bamco might be interested in bringing it back.
Yes and make a new bloody roar super offensive like a black bodybuilder gorilla a fat lady cow and gay unicorn and so on 😂
6:54 Actually Soulcalibur 2 was more popular than Tekken 4 at the time both in sales and in the competitive scene, but this is the only instance this ever happened.
Probably didn’t help that Tekken 4 was experimental and was the weakest gameplay wise.
Only because of Link though

@@merdicmagic6171 it's weird people say this when everyone was bitching about Itagaki not being there when him being there wouldn't have changed the result either way. Just play DOA Xtreme venus vacation
Same, the stages was amazing
I'm sure it will come back eventually. I still play DOA6 all the time
I will die on the hill saying dead or alive could really put up a good fight if the devs took it seriously and actually listened to its playerbase.
DOA can be really appealing to begginers but the general view of the game has been ruined by people that think the games are just the xtreme series and nothing else (like koei tecmo themselves)
It's funny that some people talk shit about DOA cuz of fan service when every other FG has fanservice even MK which has toned it down over the years.
DoA super sexy❤
They made snk May 😂 more sexy😂❤
I always thought of Tekken, Soul Calibur, DOA, and Virtua Fighter as the Mount Rushmore of 3D fighters.

Tekken was lucky
When did Tekken flop?
I'm hoping after the Tekken 8 train, I feel Sega and Team Ninja will have something for us (I’m sick and tired of hoping/wishing/praying 😓).

Here's some Reddit reasons:
The main reason is it fell well short of internal sales estimates. The Tekken Federation Service or whatever it was had its support cut within a few months of the games launch.
If you are a single player or casual Tekken fan the game was a love letter to the series. Tons of content, character endings, all the characters ever.
"As others will state it was an extremely complicated game, even by Tekken standards, and now you have to deal with not just one complicated moveset but two, and defend against two."
"
From what I hear it was that it turned a game in an already niche genre known for its extreme complexity into a game with even more complexity than before. Now you needed to know how to play two characters and figure out how the tags let you interact between each other.
Also the combo damage was extraordinarily high."
"
From a spectator's point of view, it wasn't the most exciting game in the world.
Things like the camera zooms on CH, Screws being more interesting to look at than Bound, and slow-mo all added to T7 being the kind of game someone at a large tournament would glance at and then pause to actually watch a round or two because the action was so interesting."
"
"No it didn't almost kill the franchise. That's just a stupid theory, but it didn't do well in the market and supposedly made it a bit difficult to develop Tekken 7"
"Marketing is the key to success or failure, to me ttt was great, it was still an era were you grinded for the xtra stuff, before dlcs i think its easy to say now that it was a bad game, but when it came out everyone was playng it all day, it was innovative, you had to learn strategy and chemistry to have a good team, many people learned about other characters and its the only tekken game that had everyone for free, something we might never see again. "
"There has been a lot of misinformation around TTT2 for the newcomers (T7).
Personally, i loved TTT2"
"It didn't sell well, it wasn't casual friendly, looked too similar to T6. I remember being a casual who had only messed around with T4/T6 watching the EVO reveal for this game, and honestly I thought it looked whack, never paid much attention to it after that.
It also got a bad rep in the spectator/tournament scene because 1: it was just boring to watch for many, and 2: it held up every damn tournament because of how long the sets would be."
"Bad marketing.
Playing it now, feels it was ahead of it's time."
"There was barely any marketing for it and it was too complicated even for a Tekken game. I also think another factor to TTT2 being such a financial failure was that Namco underestimated how much money they would have made at the time if they sold characters as DLC. While it was nice not having to pay for characters in TTT2, it definitely did more harm than good to the franchise."
(Not sure I agree with the no DLC argument since clearly that did effect the sales of the first 5 Tekken games (and TTT) which existed during a time DLC had not existed yet.
But I do probably agree with poor marketing and toxic combo spam and less casual friendly and maybe streamers and FGC complaining about it....
Plus, remember SFxTekken console DLC fiasco?
Yeah
God I loved Dead or Alive’s system. I just wish I could play it without being embarrassed by all the character models.
If you must know, Tekken wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Virtua Fighter.
VF is also the main reason PS1 went with 3D over sprite based.
He said that in like the first minute of the video and explained it indeph.
The first two games were also made by the same people who created Virtua Fighter
Like DC vs Marvel ❤
@@WavyJayZ I said this because Virtua Fighter has some legacy that it shouldn't be overlooked

Many would say Virtua Fighter's ceiling is higher
@@budgiecat9039 cause it is. The problem is, people like this dont even go as deep, so they dont even get to touch it
@@negentropyagent7337 shame.
Your investment at tekken usually carry on to the next installment making it more worth it
Virtua Fighter.
Virtue Fighter didnt offer much single player content and DOA focused to much on fan service. I would like to see a new entry to the either franchise.
Tekken didn't reigh ahead of Virtua Fighter like this video suggests, it's just vastly more popular
I give a ton of credit to Tekken for it being the dominant 3d fighter for the fact it has a wider appeal to more people, but in terms of the actual gameplay, Tekken is a lake to the ocean that VF is in terms of systimic depth
It doesn't matter... VF is light years of distance behind TK as a product. It barely counts as a true rival in the current age.
@@carlosaugusto9821 you sound like you definitely don't do history

@@WavyJayZ did you watch EVO Japan? They made it a main tournament game. The difference is that there's actually consistency with the system and Tekken is a more character based game with not everyone having access to the same advantages.
Dead or Alive 6 was never finished and hardly a sequel
Soul Calibur 6 got one of the worst online netcodes, and almost hardly as DoA to have a 7 too
And Virtua Fighter 5 being an Arcade/Console game... clearly talking about their situation
So, congratulations Tekken... "you win" :(
P.d.: Don't make me say Bloody Roars
You're absolutely right
Hopefully tekken 8 and this new generation of Fighting Games inspires companies to actually give devs time and money to develop new 3D Fighting games
as for DOA 6 there is a community mod named DOA6++ which makes the gameplay and mechanics similar to previous games eliminating meter and other gimmicks from 6 too bad you still have to play with DOA 6 netcode
Yeah, their win isn't much of a win at all. The rest of the field just died off, or in SC's case, being starved in favor of Tekken.
Lol!
If Capcom made a new Rival Schools it would compete with Tekken
A third Rival Schools never happened because all Capcom cares about is what franchises milks the most money.
That’s why Batsu Ichimonji (who could’ve been Capcom's answer to Jin Kazama) sometimes makes guest crossover appearances only.
if Capcom got serious about the next MvC then it could walk all over MK
@@WeeWeeJumbo
Only if Disney backed away from Capcom this time.
Virtua Fighter is and was one hell of a 3d fighting game.
I hope soul Calibur 7 comes out
can you imagine the kind of Soulcalibur they can build with modern tools and run on modern hardware? it'll be so hot
Yeah, hopefully we get one in the next decade.
Virtua Fighter, BloodyRoar, DOA
In 2 letters: No
Thanks for all the content, buddy.
Remember when Fighting EX Layer showcased they were revamping the game to include 3D movement and then we never heard anything from them since?
I played a ton of Virtua Fighter 2 in the arcades. It was a lot of fun. I also was a Sega Saturn owner so I played Vitrua Fighter a lot. My friends and I really liked it. Tekken is still my favorite 3d fighter though.
I love 3d fighters. Tekken is my favorite, but id take a new Virtua Righter and a new Doa.
No, nothing can compete with tekken and I’ve said this my whole life lol
DoA was a serious under-rated game. i remember having epic fights thanks to the whole countering system
Soul Caliber is so slept on by gamers
Bloody roar and tekken is my favourite 3D fighting games
Yes
I think 3D fighting games is in a weird spot, the already existing IP's that can go into that niche developers dont seem all that keen on bringing back. VF could 100% make a come back if Sega was to also have Like a Dragon guest characters would set it up for a good return with casual's. VF returning with a good game, net code and pro tour behind it would also bring in some really big names in the competitive FG scene that were VF players back in the day which would help it within the FGC viewership wise and people likely willing to try it
0:34 isn’t Virtua Fighter still super popular in Japan?
"Seiji: I feel like fighting games are becoming too complicated these days. I have some doubts about this trend of creating an over-complicated system and then trying to patch that up later with ease-of-entry mechanics. Regarding that aspect, I think the battle mechanics in Virtua Fighter are really simple and easy to understand. This is a design philosophy I’d like to maintain in future titles in the series."
this interview answer alone made me yearn for another VF rather than being scared about it. Seiji aoki showed more understanding of fighting games in that paragraph than the tekken team demonstrated in the past near 20 years.
This makes me wonder what Bloody Roar could have been.
Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive needs to combine with eachother.
Dead fighter
Vf is not dead same with doa
@@wildsword6856 same gameplay mechanics.
@@saltygravy86 right. I could never tell the difference
@@livewithjay8235 same gameplay, different speed.
8:58-9:02 what 2D game is that?????
Bout time someone mentions that Tekken 's side step doesn't work!
in sales, no. in quality, easily.
they cant! its not possible they don't have the money
You're telling me VF or DOA have better quality than Tekken?
Well DOA, i certainly get a lot of content out of it at a certain site whom I cannot name 😂😂😂
Rule... - cough -
Tekken has always been apart of the BIG THREE of fighting games (Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken.)
Sega killed themselves by making a game ahead of it's time. Even now if you load up VF5, graphically it holds up against today's efforts. But the cost of the board meant a lot of arcades couldn't afford to carry it and players couldn't afford to play it. In fighting games the one with the widest player base wins, always.
i hope bloody Roar 5 drops
Don't suppose DOA was robbed and buried by the EVO 2019 "Core Values" incident?
When Sega Reboots their Franchises in their trailers, Virtua Fighter is not One of them.
1. T3/tag
2. T7
3. DOA3/4
4. T6/tag2
5. KOF2000/2001
6. Double Dragon
7. KOF XI
8. SF2CE/SF4
9. KOF99
10. KOF MI 1/2.
You really need to do some research before making random ass claims and burying the reality. SC2 was once more popular and DOA doesn't deserve to be shafted to this extent.
Bloody roar is the only 3D fighter I care to see come back. Or if MK dipped their toes back into the 3D space.
I remember playing X-Men children of the atom and virtua fighter on pc with my friends so many memories in there.
I keep forgetting Tenkaichi was from Bandai Namco too. Damn, I've spent a good amount of money with them lol.
Tekken is it.

One thing is a game's release... For the older guys who know, the 90s had a huge number of different 3d fgs... But another thing is create a solid rival to TK, and that was a quality of only VF and DOA (early).
DOA is so underrated
Just played the demo...better than mk1 and sf6 imo.
seems like virtua fighter could only return if they gain alot of money to compete with the strength of tekken
but yea its definitely bad... tekken has no proper competition and so the devs can afford to get lazy in their ways
personally I'd like to see the 3D games crossover. Tekken X DOA or Namco vs SEGA (Virtual Fighter + Tekken) would be epic. Or at the very least we should get Kazuma Kiryu as a guest character Ffs!

Bloody Roar V
Virtua Fighter 6
Virtua Fighter Vs Tekken
Rival Schools 3
Kensei 2

Tenth Degree (cancelled game made by ex-Capcom devs)
What about King Of Fighters XV ?
I also hope that release a new Toshinden Game in 2024
Seems like virtua fighter(sega) doesn't even care
Maybe if Project L decided to be a 3D fighter, but that's not the case
On the topic, it's shocking that 2D games gets Indie games, new IP's and licensed games, and 3D games gets nothing.
Look at something like Super DBZ and tell me that isn't promising. I'm not a Naruro fan but the way the characters does CQC in that seems built for something close-range and fast like DoA.
I wanna see more 3D fighters outside Tekken. You see all of these anime fighters and there all just arena fighters. Instead of Storm give us a new Naruto clash of ninja
