    I've been playing electric guitar for many years and stuck in a bit of a lead guitar rut because I perceived that as the path to guitar mastery. However, I'm having so much fun learning all these different acoustic guitar techniques, Justin. It's really giving me more appreciation for rhythm guitar and keeping me honest. You're lessons are a real gift to the guitar community. Thank you for all you do.

    One thing that's fun about this song is how much scope there is to explore and put your own spin on it without getting too far away from the proper feel of the song. I like to play the 'and it burns burns burns' part of the chorus sorta punky with all downstrokes, gives it a nice energy.
    One of those songs you can keep coming back to and improving your playing of as you learn.

    Do I want to do the finger style pattern ?? What do you think? But it ain’t easy , is it? Guess I just push on .
    Your program gives the structure I for one needed . Thx

    • @JustinGuitarSongs
      @JustinGuitarSongs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Start off with regular strumming to get the song structure and tempo in your fingers. That you might try the actual picking pattern. It's harder than it looks; you might want to revisit it later on; some of your songs will get better over the weeks/months/years you play them, as you learn how to build upon them. Awesome lesson! I play well enough to have picked this up in about 15 minutes, including the melody parts you explained, but not well enough to figure out how to integrate the melody for the rest of the song on my own. I wish there were a more thorough explanation for that (or at least tabs) because I LOVE your rendition.

    I'm not sure if you said this, but the second verse is different than the first, right? When he sings "I fell for you like a child" the C chord comes in sooner than it did in the previous verse, and it affects the rhythm of the "horn" riff that comes in after that!

  • @TheSouthdownband
    @TheSouthdownband 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should do a video of Drive by Incubus, it is 1 of the most requests songs i get people asking me to teach them, but it is not a super simple song and most of the ones that want to learn it are very new to the guitar and i just don't have the proper words to teach them how to flip chords and turn your fingers into pretzels, i just play the songs, either by ear or by sheet music, been doing it long enough it is just a second nature for myself so that makes it much harder to explain, you really have a way of explaining it on a simple note. yet again another great song by a great teacher.

    That math part, kickin' my butt. But playing what I'm feeling seems easier, however the math keeps creeping back in. The melody I've got down, like I'm impressed on how quick I got it down. Now this is where the maths kills me, trying to strum the chorus w/o that common melody. It seems like I keep doing a mix of a swing style during the chorus and just strumming the melody in no particular maths :D If that makes sense. I'm gonna have to record myself probably. G C G C G & the G D G D G melody I've got down good... I like fingerstyle, but my finger strums I haven't worked on so I'm flat pickin' this one, but with a pick I'm doing what you are doing melody wise. OK I've rambled on & confused everyone and myself. Thanks for this, I used it for inspiration I guess :)

    Are the rhythms just ever so slightly varied in the second verse? I'm tearing my hair out to make it fit but when I play along with him it seems like he has just a couple of very small changes to the pattern of the verse.

    • @williamthomson3667
      @williamthomson3667 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start at a set, slower speed like 3/4 or 2/3 speed of the original and just get a feel for the changes. Once you're comfortable at that speed, try and go faster. For example, if your song is recorded at 90bpm, using a metronome play along with it at 75/60 BPM to get a feel. Rhythm is a practice thing and you just need to keep going :)

    • @AnonYmous-xm5tu
      @AnonYmous-xm5tu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you have to start slower. Slow enough that you can manage the rhythm without making mistakes. Then increase the speed slightly, like 6 beats per minute (using a metronome). And then practice for a long time!
      Took me a long time to realize the truth behind that, go try it yourself!
