    I've studied illjustration for 3 years and Fine Arts for 4, and I wish I could have know about this videos by then, because this tramples every art history or art theory lesson I've had in those combined 7 years. Congratulations for this quality content, and thank you so much.

      Well... I think the thing is about studying art is that the REALLY skilled artists hardly ever teach. You have lots of these types of artists that went like 30% of the way and got good enough to impress the universities and schools, therefore getting jobs as teachers and instructors.

    • @purklefluff
      @purklefluff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      art lecturers (university level) are required to be practicing artists with their own research/exhibition schedules. Besides, it's possible to be a great artist and not want to live your life on a commission basis and want a salary. =)

    This was a really cool video. Art, history, and magic. Very well put together. The editing style is really cool. The way you transition through the art is really creative. As an editing junkie I absolutely love this video. This is really good stuff man.

    You overlooked a massively fun detail:

    I'd love to know how she feels about that

    Karl Kopinski is one of my favorite artists of all time (especially his drawings). Thank you for taking the time to take a deep dive into his work and sharing it among the masses!
    I don't know if you take requests, but hopefully we'll get to see Jaime Jones, Wesley Burt, Peter Mohrbacher, or even Allen Williams sometime in the future!
    Even then, there's still many, many great mtg artists and it would take forever to get to all of them.
    Anyway, keep up the good work!

    Just finished watching all of this artist spotlight series (i think) and it's been amazing. The flow is perfect and certainly feel like I've learnt quite a lot about art in general. Magic art is beautiful and these are a very talented bunch of people we have creating it for us. Thanks for highlighting them and their work.

    Mardu Heartpiercer is exactly the piece that got me looking into Karl's art, and I loved it.
    I got a foil version of it for none other reason then simply to collect it. Of all the artwork in KTK, I love mardu heart piercer the most, maybe the entire block of tarkir...

    Another fantastic profile Sam! I LOVE the new art on Chord of Calling and now I know a lot more about the artist that brought it to me. I Love Karl's Ravnica goblins. There's something almost charismatic about their comically large noses profiled so prominently.

    • @RhysticStudies
      @RhysticStudies  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      his goblins are one of a kind. dem noses!

    • @simongunkel7457
      @simongunkel7457 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To some degree it's showing his background as a GW artist. The Warhammer Gobbos and 40k grots got really big noses about the time he started working there (Brian Nelson was the sculptor who really made that the GW style of gobbos and he started in 1995, but with the usual run ups to production the first big wave of new style greenskins hit just when Karl got hired in 1997. The previous iteration by Kev Adams and Colin Dixon had more diminutive noses).

    • @obeycelestia
      @obeycelestia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very interesting observation! I'm not really familiar with 40K but that sounds like a plausible explanation for the stylistic choice.

    Great analysis of what makes Kopinskis artstyle so good. Cards like Elvish Archdruid, Chord of Calling or Krenko really speak to me and i often find my self using/liking cards that Karl Kopinski has done the art for ^^ Cards like Bloodchinrager, War Flare or Mardu Heartpiercer just illustrate the nature of the Mardu so well

    Your videos have really made me appreciate the art on Magic cards once again. It was the reason back in the mid nineties that got me interested in the game in the first place.
    I am still on kind of a hiatus from Magic and haven't really played since Khans was released. I honestly didn't think much of the set at first, I don't know if I was burned out at the time, was let down in some ways or had my expectations way too high. I think I was hoping for another major game changer like Shards of Alara was. (The new enemy wedge tri-lands was what I was psyched most for at the time.)
    Since I discovered your channel, I went back and started building EDH decks again and my friend wants to go back to 60 card "kitchen table" magic where anything pretty much goes. I have added disdainful stroke, mastery of the unseen and collateral into these decks since you made me give Khans block another look. Thank you for rekindling my love of the game. Can't wait for the next video dude!
