  • Hydraulic Cylinder was Failed | We Make a New Cylinder From old Ships High Strength Pipes
We manufacture our own hydraulic cylinders, rather than simply supply those made by a third party. This gives us great flexibility over the products we offer, as well as good insight into the manufacturing and quality control processes that lead to superior performance and working life.
Here is a brief overview of the hydraulic cylinder manufacturing process we follow:
    1) Design
In the design stage the customer’s specifications are transformed into technical drawings detailing the materials, tolerances and dimensions of the hydraulic cylinder. This is the most important stage of the whole process, and is why we take care to ensure that each customer is equipped with full technical drawings before we produce any components. The design takes into account the performance outcomes required by the application, the customer’s budget, size constraints and other considerations.
    2) Machining
A range of high-capacity CNC lathes, milling and drilling units are available for the production of modern hydraulic cylinders. These machines are arranged in cells on a production line for efficient machining and assembly. The rods themselves are pre-manufactured from turned and hardened chrome, ready for manufacturing into cylinders of the correct size. Stainless or high-strength steel may also be used.
Modern CNC equipment gives manufacturers the flexibility to machine complex and non-standard hydraulic cylinders. During high volume production runs, quality control is carried out in the cycle through accurate measuring components mounted on the machine. Manual lathes are also sometimes employed for prototypes and low volume orders.
    3) Assembly
Assembly takes place in line with the technical drawings agreed with the customer before machining. This is preceded by a quality check to minimise the amount of materials handling required during the assembly process. Assembly may involve welding, in which case every care is taken to ensure the strongest join. Welding may be automated through a CNC welding unit, or carried out manually if high-strength or irregular joints are required. Weld designs are tested in advance in a virtual environment, and weld strength is verified by destructive testing.
    4) Testing
Each cylinder undergoes rigorous performance testing under power and load to confirm its specifications and durability. A quality control procedure rules out defects, and specifications are confirmed in line with customer expectations. We use coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) to verify quality standards and calibrate each cylinder before delivery.
Although testing and inspection are an integral part of the manufacturing process, visual inspection and environmental control also takes place at the machining and assembly stage. For instance, care is taken throughout the process to prevent dust accumulating on the internal surface of the cylinder - which may impede its operation.

Hello DS. For Vishnu peace of mind, make that all of our shaken nerves, get a band-saw! Not an expensive one!
Weld a long handle on that flat hammering disc. Your young partner will require his hands for his whole life!
The band saw will save hundreds of hours of machine work over a year. And make straight cuts, ready for machining, de-burring, put into use.
Throw all your load slings away. Allow zero fluids to touch the new ones, not even water!!! Add no heat, friction, crushing, bending on any strap or chain. Your load chains or straps never get used for towing. See bent / stretched links for reasons.
I know, the yearly budget for shop supplies is nearly zero. See what you can do please. Can you manage eye protection? All those valuable skilled young men. Such a waste of good eyes. Good luck!

Over my working life, I went from shops like this to aircraft gearbox manufacturing.
I was lucky enough to get my first metal working job in a shop that had been in existence since the 1930s. I learned the original way of working metals. So much so that I actually understood the process. Like these people here. They are masters at their craft. Would I use their cylinders? Absolutely.
These guys are good. Oh, the Sledge Hammer Press. That's the way we used to do it.
Note that I watch Curtis at Cutting Edge Engineering in Australia. He has modern machines, all it does is make his job easier. He understands the process and the why.

yes but curtis would never put oil on the gland , hammer it on , then weld it with oil oozing out from under the gland as you weld. also they didn't weld it on the inside at the end so i wouldn't trust it for high pressure. their weld may crack over time.

Used high pressure pipe of unknown quality. Was the pipe exposed to an over pressure situation when in use on the ship, rendering it unsafe for further use? Is the design pressure rating of the pipe as high as the hydraulic pressure it will be exposed to, along with a sufficient over pressure capacity? Was the pipe checked for stress cracks, AKA Magnafluxed? A used gland of unknown quality is installed and welded in place with what quality and specification welding rod? I won't mention the welding bead not being continuous, or the welding rod being bent, cracking the coating and jeopardizing the quality of the weld. There is a reason why oats are much cheaper after they have been thru the horse one time.

I find this vid astonishing , inspiring and almost unbelievable in terms of the inventiveness and perseverance of the craftsmen involved. Yes , they are fast and loose with perceived western values in health and safety but that’s their culture and let’s not judge them by our standards. Theirs is a no work , no eat society and you can only hold these guys working with sun standard tools in the highest regard. Respects are due 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @meshaft

I've watched several of these videos from many of their channels and it seems they all use the same type of welding rod (possibly 7018) and never have a welding helmet and use a homemade welder.

    • @sies2371
      @sies2371 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

with the bend they can let the torch "fall" in instead of moving it forward. think of the radius your hand makes when you have your elbow on the desk while moving your arm forward ( and down). it's a more natural move. ( i think )

As long as you don't use the rod up to the bend it's not a problem.

Rule 1 of working in a machine shop... no loose clothing, no long sleeves, if you need the long sleeves due to cold make sure they are tightly fitting to the arms, no jewelry, rings, watches, nothing that could get caught in the spinning work or tools and remove your body parts.
Rule 2, no open shoes. The chips, hot or cold, are hell on the feet.
