Between the varying weather conditions and the unrelenting terrain, this was undeniably the toughest winter backpacking route I've ever personally done. It was also a ton of fun :) Oh, and I also did this trip with zero cell service March 10-13, right when the world was apparently getting turned on it's head. All unbeknownst to me of course. As you can imagine, I had quite a bit of catching up to do once I got out of the woods that night, 500 mile's from home, just trying to find a cheeseburger ;) Hope everyone's doing as best they can out there. Hang in there! There's always light at the end of the tunnel and future hiking trips to be had.
Was looking for some new exciting adventures! Really enjoyed this, but wore me out ! LOLOL. SOOOOOOOO WISH I WAS ABLE TO TO DO THIS !! I did when I was young ! 75 now and sooooo enjoy watching !!! Be Safe and God Bless you and your family !! Hope
I finally watched this on Feb. 2023. What a Video! If there’s one word I would use to describe You, Sintax77 it would be DETERMINED. Because You Are!! Gracious! What an ordeal that was! But I’m so glad I got to see it all. And I sure hope after all that, You finally got a decent Cheezeboigah! 🍔🍔🍔🍔
First time watching you, I’ve never hiked, I’m a 75 yr old grandma so it’s something I will leave for young people. You scared me several times, especially on top of the mountain with fog coming in. But I sure forgot being locked in. So thanks!
I was born, raised and have lived all my life in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Living so close to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I have spent many many days, weeks and months tromping all over those mountains. I have followed you on your trips to the Whites and have enjoyed watching you very much. I was older before I realized just how enjoyable hammock camping can be. I regret that I did not learn about this earlier. Since becoming acquainted with this type of camping I have spent many enjoyable weekends sleeping in my hammock and, whenever possible, under the stars. I am too old now and I am confined to a wheelchair, so I am unable to spend nights sleeping under the stars in those beautiful New Hampshire mountains. Now you take me there and I thank you for that. Stay healthy in these crazy times we are living in. We will get through this pandemic.
I watched that whole video and yes, it was engaging. Yes, the scenery was beautiful. Yes, I enjoyed it BUT... BUT I 100% wanted to see that cheeseburger!
I enjoy your Winter trips. Catching up on this one from last year. I know you know what you are doing but I still worry about you. Tell Mike to get his ass out there with you. But maybe he’s gone soft and couldn’t keep up with you now? One can get stuck in a pattern of sitting on the sofa with the kids developing a dad-bod:) Love ya, Mike!
That was very enjoyable to watch while in lockdown in Melbourne Australia. It made me hungry for the time (Perhaps after Sunday when our government updates us on our new restrictions) when I can do such. Cheers Brother.
This was an awesome adventure. Scary ice in that fog up top. Maybe knee pads next time, just in case of a slip? Busting a knee in that environment would be very bad, yes?
Sounds like your "Ambition" is making a harder trip than it should be... Just enjoy the surroundings (NATIRE) and know that you have your Tarp & Hammock for Shelter!
I would love to do an overnight or couple nights....I'm a Union Firefighter in New Bedford Ma very flexible schedule.. I'm only 3hrs from The Whites I've done a bunch of day hikes... The Franconia Ridge loop 3 times, Huntington Ravine 2 times, Six Husband's trail Welsh Dicky loop a bunch...... I'm looking to jump into Hammock Camping/ Hiking ... If you have the time any suggestions and advice for a 1st Hammock and Bigger Pack I use A North Face 22 I assume that's to small and maybe a good loop for a 1st overnight hike....Thanks so much brotha...I love the channel man.... Great stuff keep em coming..... Josh
I've probably watched ten syntax hikes in the last week. First off, awesome content. Second. Mileage goals are blown at least one day every trip and sleeps in too late. Best way to enjoy the trip in my opinion, go with the flow.
This episode should be called the "The Endless Trail". Watched this one so many times. Great video. Loved your attitude as you found missing peak after missing peak.
Well that was a great escape for us quarantined folks all over the USA. I admire your solo spirit but I would probably only do something like that with a partner. Glad you are sponsored, well deserved and appropriate given how much you get out there and keep us up to speed on your gear and how it performs. All the best, stay healthy and be safe!!
Hey shawn your welcome for your care package i never expected to be watching this video and see you using the mountain house chili mac hope you enjoyed it hope denali enjoyed the treats thanks for the shout out love the video
I fall in love with the Whites all over again. every time I visit them or see them, and that's been happening for decades. They really are my favorite place on Earth. Thanks for sharing an awesome adventure!
One of your best videos. I know the Whites like the back of my hand and truly appreciate the terrain you had to cross. Thank you for all the effort to share such an amazing video.
Sintax Solo Winter Whites. My absolute favorite style of Sintax adventure! I've wanted to do that area in winter so maybe next year will be it. You had us on the edge of our seats as soon as you set up camp early on Day1 - "No way he's gonna make up the miles." But the pro comes through with epic views to boot. That was harder than the super windy winter trip with Mike up on the Bonds? (Backcountry is the bomb dot com. They are my go to for everthing). Hope that burger was waiting for ya....
That windy bonds trip was up there, for sure. I think this one edges it out by a little bit simply because on the bonds trip we ended up doubling back into the woods on the second day and turned our attempted loop into an out and back with a pretty chill time at camp the second day and night. On this one I kept pushing through like an idiot and destroyed myself with all that Franconia elevation on the final day, haha. At least the winds were only 40 mph instead of 80 on this one though :)
Man U have some grapefruit size balls!! I’m sure glad you make these videos. I would never try to do something like this. I don’t have the ability or the guts. Awesome video thx
I've definitely had that weird dream where you have the hammock setup inside of a shelter. You wake up and think *IF* I had done that, it would be an incredibly easy start to my day. I bet it's a fairly common dream on the trail when no one is around and the weather is a bit questionable.
Tough hike in the snow. Kahtoola microspikes seem to be perfect for that kind of surface. I will definitely buy a couple of these. Thanks for a great video.
Dude. That was an epic trip. I thought that loop was hard enough in the summer and you took it to a new level. Incredible. I bet that burger tasted like victory.
I've done the Lafayette ridge trail in the winter. 50mph winds confirmed with a hand held anemometer. Also did Adams in winter with similar conditions. My favorite part is the sign at the beginning of some of the trails that state "warning, people have died here". The whites are no joke, even in summer. Great vid
I’m not a good winter hiker; but, I learned two things working in Alaska: one, respect the cold, two, respect the ice. Whew, Buddy, tough hike. Glad you’re safe and sound. Thanks for the hard work and sharing. Texas
Hey Shawn. Just wanted to drop a line and tell you how much I respect and appreciate your dedication to the craft. Walking up that embankment with those snow shoes going nowhere knowing you have to do it all again to come back and get the camera. I know filming slows down the whole trip and I just wanted to say thank you. Been watching since close to the beginning and still impressed every time I watch. Cheers to the “Wizard of the Whites”
Thanks, Dwayne. I'm glad you're still enjoying the adventures after all these years. I don't know if I'm worthy of that title, but it does sound cool :)
love this - it's amazing all the gear us humans need to traverse/survive winter conditions meanwhile animals are born with all they need haha. Love your vids. Keep it up!
Hitting the Burger King off rt 93 after a long day of hiking and having a cheeseburger and fries for the ride home... brings back memories. I've hiked that in the fall and your winter conditions are so different... thanks for posting the video..Amazing hike.
Heck, the back pack looks really heavy. I’m glad you got n out of the rain. I really enjoy going on these trips with you. I love watching these video’s. It gets me out of the house. I can’t go like I use, to. My feet bother me a lot. When I watch you, I worry about you, like I do my own kids. Some of the trails you go on kind of makes me nervous. But you are fun to go along with. 😊. Thanks
I love this video and how it shows you have to adapt your plan. I've had 5 multi-day hikes on some part of that loop and none of them have gone as planned, I learned pretty quick to always have alternative routes and camping spots picked out before heading up there. I cant wait for the surprises I'll find on my next trip. Awesome job!
Nice. I love the Pemigewasset River, especially the stretch between Bristol and Franklin where the old Bristol Branch Railroad ran. Thanks for the video.
Dude, twice now I've hiked the section from Garfield pond to Lincoln Woods trail head over Franconia Ridge and it is NO JOKE! The fact you did it from Garfield Ridge campsite in the winter is damn impressive. I'll be honest, when you were giving time updates I thought for sure the burger was out of the picture. Glad you made it out safe, timely, and thanks again for some amazing content!
Wow that was a prety epic trip, your laid back style hides how serious some of your hikes are. Having the extra capacity and will power to carry on filming is impressive. Well done!
Another awesome video. I certainly don't have the balls to do what you do, alone in the Whites in the winter. Good on you. Looked like an amazing adventure. Love the pack. Looked like it was comfortable. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you.
I have watched most of your videos and I am planning a 4 to 5 day backpacking trip somewhere on the east coast bc we don't want to fly. We've narrowed it down to either the whites or the anorandacks. Any recommendations as to which on would be more worth our time. We've been to the whites before just car camping and really like it but it's a bit farther from our house. Do you think it's worth the extra drive vs just going to high peaks in upstate ny.
Man! You are a beast! That's some grueling hiking alone, then add the pack weight and snow on the trail! You stuck to it and I'm sure still had a great trip and escape!
thank u a million for taking ur time and risking a lot for this trip really loved the video, oddly i have not been getting any videos showing in my thingy for what ever the risening reallyinjoyed the video and the hard work you put into ur amazing videos.
Thanks, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it. Hit the little bell icon in the corner of the video and you'll start getting notifications for my new uploads. :)
I am so glad you shared this!Have been wondering what happened to all the videos?BTW,the Marmot jacket you got is not truly waterproof-the only thing that is would be is Gore-Tex,but I’m sure you know this.If Backcountry was letting you pick any three items-why not get an Arc’teryx Alpha jacket and be done with replacing jackets every few years.bombproof, waterproof, wind proof and breathable in ways you could only dream about. The one I was issued in Afghanistan saved my life up in the Hindu Kush range(over 12K)when temps drop 60 degrees between day and night. Saved me more than once over there, and countless times stateside up in the Adirondacks.
That jacket sounds pretty aswesome. I had my pick of the litter with Backcountry, but I did have a budget so Arc'teryx would have probably blown my limit, haha. Their stuff does look great. I got dumped on pretty good in the Marmot Exclipse and it held up quite nice though.
sintax77 if you thought it did well, wait til you try the cream of the crop.In SF we got the absolute best of the best in gear and weapons- I actually learned the right way about layering after getting into a special mission unit.Arc’teryx taught us that we only needed three layers-a baselayer, and midlayer fleece(which is super light-between 100 weight and 200 weight)and that Alpha jacket.I was warm and dry from 80 all the way down to -20 and ready for anything.
Ha, now your username makes more sense. Didn't make the connection that you were SF. I have a friend in there over here in the states. That's who put me on to the Adidas Terrex Swift R's that I've been wearing for years. Wait until I tell him you're getting flossed with with Arc'teryx gear over there though, haha. Stay safe, man and thanks for the feedback.
sintax77 funny story on that-before my first deployment to the sandbox,we were issued all new equipment (TA50)and clothing from Arc’teryx LEAF(Law Enforcement Armed Forces)which added up to about 10K per individual soldier.I was an officer and saw how much the unit paid to them, and it was astronomical, but it really lightened our loadout and allowed us to carry more ammo and water, which is far more important than most other things.I remember the CO went batshit crazy when he saw the bill of lading, but we were already on a plane and he couldn’t scream at any of us.Those pieces of gear are with me on every off duty ski trip and outdoor adventure(usually backpacking in the Cascades near my home in Lake Placid.) What unit is your buddy in?I was with A CO,1st of the 5th Special Forces Grp(ABN)which is the Commander En Extremis Force of the GRP-Direct Action specific.
Holy S#*t man! I go up there every year in October for a day hike and get my ass kicked. You are very ambitious and you did awesome. I’m very impressed. Your an inspiration to us who want to try more solo trips.
Awesome video, can't wait for the next one. Bold choice for winter/early spring trip, I honestly think they can be more difficult than a deep winter trip because of not only weather changes but trail conditions can change very quickly.
We've been watching your videos for a while now; my husband and I really enjoy them. Lately, it seems like you've run into a lot of rain, during your hikes. I chuckled...only because, when stuff like that happens to my husband and me, he'll say, "It's because we're Crawfords." ;-)
Hey 77 you know what is great for energy and quick on the go are gu packs with caffeine you can find them at any big five, bike shop, mountenering store they have coffee, strawberry, vanilla flavors to
Outstanding job. How much did your fully packed backpack weigh. It's a lot more than I want to carry in the White Mountains and in the snow. I look forward to many more of your great videos.
Damn brother, you do some crazy shit. Just looking at the ridge walk to Liberty was not something I want to do on ice. Very interesting dream indeed. You definitely bit off a big frozen chunk of the whites to chew on. Looks like an ice axe might have been a good piece of gear on the steeps.
going up the face of Lafayette was the the one time where I _really_ wished I had my real crampons and an ice axe. I took a long time finding the right approach for that. It probably would have been okay for dayhiking, but with the iced over snow from the previous night's rain and the 40mph winds hitting my overnight pack, it was a bit of an ordeal. At one point I had to give up on my chosen route, take off my pack and carefully scoot down while sliding the pack alongside me. I wish I would have filmed some updates of that, but I was more concerned with not sliding all the way back down to treeline, haha.
That was pretty hardcore man. I could picture all those places in the summer but not yet in the winter. Glad I got to see them from this video. Thanks and nice work! Don't forget to hit the Sunny Day Diner for breakfast next time!
Thanks for the extra trip report info in the description..Awesome footage dude..thanks for something to watch...don't get anymore WINTER than this vid..
The White mountains in early spring/ later winter are nuts. I experienced the same issue with the snow crusting on top and just gone below. It definitely does make for some interesting hiking.
Really good job of videotaping this video. Had to be tough to video and retrieve the camera. You better return to the Superstition wilderness here in Arizona and avoid the snow
The factor that tends to get overlooked in these videos is the fact that your doing all the filming too which is a job in it's own right.I bet there were times when you thought about just putting the camera away and just bust it to the jeep, lol.
Between the varying weather conditions and the unrelenting terrain, this was undeniably the toughest winter backpacking route I've ever personally done. sintax77 you normally get cell service on the Franconia Ridge?
sintax77 That’s nuts!
@@toddgersh I always have perfect cell service on Franconia ridge
I just watched this one a second or third time. That was a tough one, but beautiful. You earned that cheeseburger!
Hope

I really miss this type of camping from Boy Scouts (back in 1991)!
Now I feal real old...
I watched that whole video and yes, it was engaging. Yes, the scenery was beautiful. Yes, I enjoyed it BUT... BUT I 100% wanted to see that cheeseburger!
Great job sintax77 ,yeah it's all up or down.and now it's time for that cheeseburgers

When self-isolation is the thing to do, this is the way to do it.
Well done!

Denali loved those treats, haha. Sara and I actually just used the maple syrup for breakfast over the weekend. That's some good stuff! :)
I fall in love with the Whites all over again. every time I visit them or see them, and that's been happening for decades. They really are my favorite place on Earth. Thanks for sharing an awesome adventure!
Given the current events in the news this was right on time.
With so many of us quarantined and getting cabin fever, this was a perfect remedy! Thanks !You and your family stay safe ....
Like the oldschool sintax77 backpacking vibes on this trip, always a pleasure to watch, thank you for these videos Sean!
TundraDCTRDSR5 I was thinking the same. Love these type of videos!
One of your best videos. I know the Whites like the back of my hand and truly appreciate the terrain you had to cross. Thank you for all the effort to share such an amazing video.
Yesssss!!!! I am saving this for tonight, thank you for sharing your adventures with us! Stay well ♥
My pleasure. Hope you enjoy it :)

Let's head........🤘North

Thanks for posting, Bud. There's nothing better then a Sintax Vid when force to stay at home. Right Carol? .... Hey Carol, right?!?!? Carol !!!
Carrrrrrrollll!
Man U have some grapefruit size balls!! I’m sure glad you make these videos. I would never try to do something like this. I don’t have the ability or the guts. Awesome video thx

Another excellent video! 👍 I always enjoy watching your trips to the Whites. This was a challenging winter trip!
Thanks, Uptrail. I definitely met my match on this one.
Wow those trails up in those mountains look very challenging for sure!
I have the same Salomon boots they are awesome!!! Feet stayed real warm into sub zero temps.
That's good to hear. I'm very happy with mine so far.
Tough hike in the snow. Kahtoola microspikes seem to be perfect for that kind of surface. I will definitely buy a couple of these. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for the video, helps these days. Hope you and your family are well.
Gotta love the "Blue Tarp Camping" life!
Dude. That was an epic trip. I thought that loop was hard enough in the summer and you took it to a new level. Incredible. I bet that burger tasted like victory.
I cracked up when you put up the tarp as it started raining. The auto captions heard the rain and said [applause]

Love your videos! I spend practically every weekend in the white mountains camping and practicing bushcraft/wilderness survival.
No shots of the "infamous Death By Cheeseburger"? I feel cheated!
Kenneth Nied I’ve had the Death by Sandwich there a couple times. The method is choking you with dry bread.
That was a booger! Thanks for the vicarious Type 2 fun :- )
Always love your attitude. Thx for your hard work
Awesome trip. Nice pointing out the spruce traps the little things you don't always think about.
I love this video and how it shows you have to adapt your plan. A much needed mental and visual break from the craziest time in our lives...
Awesome trip - you’re really leading the way in how to get out there and enjoy yourself and your gear despite the weather and the season.

Great trip Sintax. Always love your winter adventures especially in the Whites. Good recovery on the mileage change. Thanks for sharing as always.
Not to be funny or something but I'm pretty sure that Santa's elves aren't supposed to be in America in Spring? 33:21...
Wow, that was awesome. One of your best.
I love that tarp. Looks amazing.
thank you for entertaining me at work!
Definitely one of the most interesting videos I’ve seen in awhile
Glad to see that you got the chance to get out
And with all the crap is going on
Excellent timing
Strange times. It was an odd drive home, for sure.
Wow! One of your hardest hikes!
Great to see a new Whites video!!!! Awesome video as always. 👍👍
Excellent vid, so well done. Liked n Subscribed. What a treat. Thx
Thanks, Valorie. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank goodness for that shelter after your night hike!
I usually avoid shelters, but I was pretty happy when that thing popped up out of the darkness :D
Man! You are a beast! That's some grueling hiking alone, then add the pack weight and snow on the trail! You stuck to it and I'm sure still had a great trip and escape!

I love my katoola micro spikes. Ive had mine since 2014.
Stay safe, man and thanks for the feedback.
sintax77 funny story on that-before my first deployment to the sandbox,we were issued all new equipment (TA50)and clothing from Arc’teryx LEAF(Law Enforcement Armed Forces)which added up to about 10K per individual soldier.I was an officer and saw how much the unit paid to them, and it was astronomical, but it really lightened our loadout and allowed us to carry more ammo and water, which is far more important than most other things.I remember the CO went batshit crazy when he saw the bill of lading, but we were already on a plane and he couldn’t scream at any of us.Those pieces of gear are with me on every off duty ski trip and outdoor adventure(usually backpacking in the Cascades near my home in Lake Placid.)
What unit is your buddy in?I was with
A CO,1st of the 5th Special Forces Grp(ABN)which is the Commander En Extremis Force of the GRP-Direct Action specific.
lol, that's crazy man. I'm honestly not sure who he's with right now. He's been at it a while. He's away right now, but I'll have to ask.
What a trip man!
Hey man thanks for another great video. Take care and be safe
That was great!
We've been watching your videos for a while now; my husband and I really enjoy them. Lately, it seems like you've run into a lot of rain, during your hikes. I chuckled...only because, when stuff like that happens to my husband and me, he'll say, "It's because we're Crawfords." ;-)
Hey 77 you know what is great for energy and quick on the go are gu packs with caffeine you can find them at any big five, bike shop, mountenering store they have coffee, strawberry, vanilla flavors to
Haven't seen a video of yours for a while... you are best when backpacking alone ...
You should gather the water runoff from your tarp. Save on melting snow. Thanks for all your efforts.
Outstanding job. How much did your fully packed backpack weigh. It's a lot more than I want to carry in the White Mountains and in the snow. I look forward to many more of your great videos.
You’re a braver man than I my friend! Rollin solo in those conditions! Nice job! Glad to see you’re safe! Stay well!
Can't wait to watch this later. My favorite place to explore (during summer and fall) I'll eventually get out there in the winter
Ha drove by Franconia Ridge today. A lot less snow now
Glad I got it in while I could :)
You mentioned listening to an audio book......what's on the Sintax77 bookshelf?
Excellent mountaineering winter adventure!!
That was pretty hardcore man. I could picture all those places in the summer but not yet in the winter. Glad I got to see them from this video. Thanks and nice work! Don't forget to hit the Sunny Day Diner for breakfast next time!
Narly trip man! Thanks for taking us along.
I admire your fortitude.
Thanks for the extra trip report info in the description..Awesome footage dude..thanks for something to watch...don't get anymore WINTER than this vid..
Yeah, I truly got a little bit of everything in this video. It was pretty intense :D
Pretty cool ya did it solo...spring didn't come there yet..thats for sure..love the snow..
The White mountains in early spring/ later winter are nuts. I experienced the same issue with the snow crusting on top and just gone below. It definitely does make for some interesting hiking.
Dude your videos are amazing love the content 👍
Really good job of videotaping this video. Had to be tough to video and retrieve the camera. You better return to the Superstition wilderness here in Arizona and avoid the snow
funny im actually doing this hike this weekend
The factor that tends to get overlooked in these videos is the fact that your doing all the filming too which is a job in it's own right.I bet there were times when you thought about just putting the camera away and just bust it to the jeep, lol.
