    The idea of 4:3 anamorphic seems interesting, the background seperation is absolutdly insane.

    This is almost exactly the technique that Erik Wilson used on the show Landscapers. It was shot on a portrait mounted Sony Venice with an anamorphic lens on a special 90 degree pinned PL mount. This allowed Erik to get as large an image area as possible for a 16:9 delivery format.

      Thank you for your comment. I have a question: what would be the best (budget) way to preview the image in this case. Cause we'd have to turn it 90° before applying the desqueeze on the screen... Thanks in advance!

    • @christykail3314
      @christykail3314 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oddmoviez1602 There's not really a budget way of monitoring it accurately, unfortunately. On Landscapers they used AJA ROI boxes between the cameras and the DIT rig, but those are around 1K each.

    I've tried this after seeing the Epic Light Media video, I tried to use the applied idea to make a compact system and trying to solve the monitoring problem, I paired my Canon R5 with Helios-44-2 attached to a Kowa replica, and the whole system mounted vertically on Ronin RS3 Pro, the lens is mounted on a tripod mount ring which attracted to 15mm rod system so I can rotate it to get vertical or horizontal anamorphic at any time, accompanied by DJI LiDar range finder, spent countless hours trying to find an affordable monitor that supports vertical de-squeeze, finally I found the Portkeys LH5P which allows you to custom de-squeeze ratio below 1:1, and the result is: 8K Full-frame anamorphic, almost 1:1 ratio footage, full of characteristic, awesome autofocus, and you can operate the whole kit by your self, and it's affordable, the process is fun, and the whole thing is just ridiculous!!!

    This is the kind of tinkering I live for! Loved this! If you have one I'd love to see the Sirui 1.25x on it to maybe get close to a 16:9 IMAX sensor rendition!! It would be super soft and have rough vignetting but imagine how cool it would be!!!

    I started watching this video on my TV, then switched to my phone... And wow! The difference of the almost 1:1 aspect ratio in playback on TH-cam is amazing in portrait orientation. The video fills more screen and looks larger so I don't feel like I have to watch it in landscape orientation to actually see the details on a smaller screen. Amazing!

    Among other applications,
    The nearly 1:1 aspect ratio could lend itself to a whole new style of making video for social media platforms

  • @MathieuStern

    What a coincidence! Today I was playing with anamorphic scope (2x cinelux) for photos so putting the scope on a tripod mount so I can rotate the camera 90 degrees for 4x3 aspect ratio instead of the native 2x3 portrait mode.

    @anamorphic on a budget ...OHHH, THIS, THIS IS GENIOUS!!!! Out of so many reasons! 1. Ideal for VFX "Open Gate" work, you can do crops, camera post shakes, etc.. 2. Ideal for social media, framing intelligently helps with both mobile and tv shots 3. The look doesnt change, because the camera only turns. ... Wait does that mean WE ARE Alexa 65 territory ??? Or what ?😀

    • @jmalmsten
      @jmalmsten 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As most shows were on vertical feed 35mm you would not need a full frame lens to begin with. So as long as you have a camera that has the appropriate size open gate sensor you probably could do it without sideways anamorphics already.
      And, later on, shows shot on 35 transitioned over to s35 in 3 perf so they could save on a third of the film stock while still getting a widescreen friendly image. And we already have lots of s35 sensor cameras that match those sizes pretty reliably.

    Great use of the open gate and anamorphincs of the s1h

  • @Superbustr
    @Superbustr ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This comes down to two factors. 4:3 anamorphic output vs 2.4:1 anamorphic output with a 2x anamorphic lens.
    The 4:3 output has more resolution since you don't crop any pixels vs the 2.4:1 output which has less resolution because you nearly always have to crop out the extra width to get 2.4:1.
    Just because you gain more resolution using the full sensor size in portraiture mode without cropping pixels does not mean that it is medium format anamorphic. For this to be anamorphic medium format you would have to use an anamorphic lens that covers a medium format capture area with a camera that has a medium format sensor like the Fuji GFX 50s.
    To be classified as medium format you would have to record onto a sensor that is larger than 36x24mm FF.

  • @slipoch6635
    @slipoch6635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I saw the ELM test a while ago, I think one paart of the image quality difference was that they were using a 12k camera and an Ursa sensor, Ursas seem to give good skin tones and have a softer more organic look already and at 12k the loss of the number of pixels when turned sideways doesn't affect the picture as much as it would on lower-resolution sensors.
    I find this fascinating as the DOF change seems to give you a bit more of an Arri look, but it could be a placebo effect.

    one thing to consider, especially with the FF Pannys, is rolling shutter. Because it can get you some awkward results.

  • @gianlucamingotto

    anamorphic is not made to pull the image, but made to squash original 4:3, so you will have more quality from that informations pushing and not pulling, cos if you pull you loose quality. More advantage is the panoramic view and aesthetic of the wide screen. The information that you get from the sensor doesn't change. So really... interesting, but why, i don't see real improvements from this, but nice energy :)

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This technique is totally valid to stretch out the width (now height as the camera is sideways) of the sensor image to reveal a 4:3 format. Quite an interesting look if you ask me. Apart from the awkward monitoring, to have painterly footage with all anamorphic qualities apart from the extreme widescreen is a breath of fresh air, gives the picture loads more breathing room.

    Hmmm - so here’s what I have
    Sony FX3
    Helios 44
    Kowa 16s
    Redstan clamp
    Theoretically the redstan should let me spin the kowa animorphic while the helios stays locked to the camera.
    Wish me luck - still waiting for the Kowa to arrive from Ukraine

    Would this work with an anamorphic adapter screwed at 90° to be vertical and tilting (let's say) an XT5 in portrait mode (horizontal adapter + vertical sensor)? I guess my question is more: can an adapter securely fit at 90° of it's supposed placement?

    Hey Tito a little suggestion for nice experiment. Can you please try an opengate+2.5x squeeze on this vertical setup . i think if it worked that might create a virtual 64x36 imaging sensor which is crazy.

    Since I saw this video I am wondering if I have been doing & calculating things wrong. At 2.11 you say that you multiply the long side of the sensor by 1.8. Say you shoot HD, does this mean that when you edit the footage, you keep 1080 pixels in the short side, and multiply 1920*1.8 to get the right resolution for your edit? Not considering a possible crop to e.g. 2.4:1 that is. I have been deviding the short side by 1.8 so with a 1.8x lens my resolution would become 1920* 600 (not considering a more logical crop).
    In other words, I always assumed that I cannot deliver a true 4k video when shooting on a 4k 16:9 sensor when using a 1.8x anamorphic lens. The max resolution would become something like 2880x1200 (2160/1.8=1200. 1200x2.4=2880)
    Help!

      Your math is better for image quality. A lot of things in this episode are conceptual and abstract. This is the best tool for figuring out rescales and resolutions: www.tferradans.com/arcalc/go :)

    What is that purple mount you have on your camera allowing the lens to be turned?

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  ปีที่แล้ว

      the mount itself is just a PL mount, which has four different ways to mount the lens. this one in particular is the POCO adapter. :)

    Combining a 2x lens, with a 2x rear vertically could give you a 2x look on a 4x sensor area and a native aspect ratio?

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget

      Technically, yes. But likely to compromise image quality to some extent.

    FoV with a 35mm lens on 3/2 FF is 63 degrees vertical/42 degrees horizontal, multiple by 1.8x u get a 75h/63v degree FoV. which is equivalent to a 28mm on FF.
    image/blur should look similar to a 28mm f1.6 spherical lens except with extra vertical real estate. or a 24mm f1.4 with sides cropped
