Mainly because, unless you are very deep into music; These are songs that are going to be played mostly in public settings, like stores, radios, in passing, basically out of most peoples control, so a lot of the song names and album art don’t initially ring a bell with me at least

Edit: It seems Sicko Mode got to #9 in 2019!!! Mo Bamba also got to #49 that year, jokes aside it's still huge considering we're talking about a 2017 song, but it still felt bigger than a lot of the competition

2018 was not a bad year. But it was certainly Drake's Year. Boy had hits that year, Gods Plan, Non Stop, In my Feelings and Sicko Mode.

I liked Perfect by Ed Sheeran when it first dropped but it got played absolutely to death to the point that I turned off the radio when it came on. I also got married in 2018 in my mid/late twenties and refused to have that song anywhere near my wedding.

I like to stay aware of what's going on in pop music, there's nothing better than when a song is so undeniably good that everyone loves it (Heya and Toxic spring to mind) but I legit have not heard any of these songs
2018 is starting to become nostalgic with some of the hits that year. I’ve grown an appreciation for some songs like “I Like It” and “Nice For What”. They just have this radiant vibe to them that a lot of 2018 billboard hits seem to have.

I worked at Target when The Middle came out. The reason you associate it with retail is because it was in a Target commercial. A commercial that they played on loop every 5 minutes in the electronics section, that you could hear if you were anywhere on that side of the store. That song can burn in hell.

I think your positions on things not only change with time, but you’re also now viewing these songs in the sphere of “billboard top ten commercial music: is it better than generic pop” rather than viewing these tunes as a part of either the genre they belong to or to the wider musical culture.
